• Windows 9x + USB Support

From Mike Powell@1:2320/105 to ALL on Mon Nov 27 11:21:00 2023
Was USB support added by the time that Windows 98 SE was released, or was
that feature not included until ME was released?

As google says and I also remember: support was already for Win95 OSR 2.1 and on.

Win98 - stable USB I would say was since Service Pack 3.x

Thanks. I could not remember it has been so long. Since I was sitting
here at the BBS I decided to ask here. ;)

I remember keeping an OSR2 CD handy for re-installs. USB support was
pretty spotty back then, I think all I ran was a USB scanner at that
    point.

Everything is very simple. There are drivers for Windows 95/98 and for Dos. I recommend using DOS drivers since Windows 95 is just a Dos shell.
    Clean Win9x:

    DOS:

Also, if these drivers do not work for you, I can send you other versions. P.s. I'm looking for free Gopher:// hosting for my files under Windows 98 and
    DOS with FTP access.

Thanks! I will check these out if I run into issues. Heck I might check
them out just to have them on the BBS. ;)

OK, if I see anything I will let you know.

Head to https://legacyupdate.net from win98se, install the Windows Update
addon and update your machine the furthest you can.

I know that win98 first release had usb, can't say about for when 95 may have had usb support if it ever did.

Windows 95 OSR2 had spotty support for USB 1.1.

I have not tried the update suggestion yet but what I can tell so far with
98SE is that it seems to know what a USB port is but does not contain any generic drivers that allow it to "just work" like more recent versions of Windows have and, IIRC, linux always seemed to have.

So you have USB ports that 98SE sort of knows about but that you cannot
really use for anything unless you have the specific driver for your
    hardware.
