can you please, if you mark your message as "UTF-8", post erroneus string in safe way, e.g. as hex dump, or replacing invalid codepoints with some character like question mark?
If you copy from nodelist INVALID string with BINARY AS IS, it obviously makes your message invalid too.
I was to forcibly mark your message as CP437 to read it, becouse trying to decode it as UTF-8 ends with error.

Hmm.. I see your point.

The program I wrote many years ago only detects the first appearance of a non valid utf8 sequence in a line. It ignores any other invalid sequences in the same line. So only the first occurence is replaced by a question mark, the rest is copied as is.

I think I have found a work around.

He insists on entering the 'a' and 'o' with umlaut in Säve and Björn in 202/208 in Latin-1 in the normal ASCII nodelist. So in the ASCII list they are replaced by question marks by MakeNl. In the UTF list which in his case is just a copy of the ASCII segment submitted, they appear "as submitted" and the line is flagged as in error by my program.

To get it right Björn would have to be convinced to let go of the idea that entering LATIN-1 in the regular nodelist is not a good idea. Plus that he would have to start participating in the UTF nodelist project.

I have tried and sort of given up... :-(

There still may be nodelist processing software around that breaks when he highest bit is not zero. The encoding for the UTF nodelist is also defined: UTF-8.

As an aside, one could simply run the UTF-8 generated nodelist through a conversion utility (like iconv or similar) to ensure that it is proper UTF-8, before being distributed to the rest of the world, rather than having a weekly report that shows an error that you say will most likely never be fixed (due to someone being stubborn and/or proud that they are the one creating the error on purpose?).

This particular problem could indeed be easely fixed at the ZC's
side. But it should not be needed. Plus that it is hard to fight
against someone knwowingly and willingly looking for loopholes to
derail the system. If this particular loophole were blocked it
could easely turn into an arms race that benefits no one. The
weekly error may be the lesser evil...

I do not recall the exact time frame, but it is correct that the main issue is with the ASCII nodelist. That it also appears as an error in the UTF-8 nodelist is "colleteral damage".

The ZC does double processing. One for the ASCII list and one for the UTF list. For the UTF list MakeNl is run with ALLOW8BIT set. For regions that dot not participate in the UTF list, the ZC uses the ASCII segment for both list. For regions that do participate, their seperate UTF region segment is used for the UTF list.

RC20 does not participate in the UTF nodelist project. He does not send two different segments. But his segment is not pure ASCII, it contain some characters in Latin-1. So for the ASCII list, the ZC's MakNl substitutes question marks for the non ASCII characters. For the UTF list, they are passed "as is". But that was only was noticed after I started my weekly error report.

After 30+ years of not doing it, it may be difficult to get used to it. I'm not saying it's impossible, as I can do ALT-0235 to get the desired "ë", but it's a bit of a challenge to try to remember to do every time I type my name. :)

Is it even LATIN-1? Or does it just end up that way because of CP437 probably turns into ISO-8859-1 on Windows? Isn't CP437 -> ISO-8859-1 basically the same as ASCII -> UTF-8 where everything in the former is also represented in the latter (then again, ASCII would be part of many, if not every charset)?

I say it is the resposibiliy of the RCs to submit an error free segment to the ZC. But let's not make a mauntain out of a mole hil. We have ONE RC submitting a segment that causes ONE line in the nodlist to be in error. An error that is largely cosmetic.

There is the alternative of "AltGr". The right Alt key acts as a second "shift" key. E.g. "AltGr 5" is the Euro sign.

In DOS there was the option of defining a keyboard macro for things like that. I don't know about Windows or Linus. Did not need it any mor4e.

The ZC does double processing. One for the ASCII list and one for
the UTF list. For the UTF list MakeNl is run with ALLOW8BIT set.
For regions that dot not participate in the UTF list, the ZC uses
the ASCII segment for both list. For regions that do participate,
their seperate UTF region segment is used for the UTF list.

Yes. When I was RC I also did it. It is not hard, the UTF part is mostly a copy of the ASCII setup. Except for the file names and the ALLOW8BIT setting.

RC20 does not participate in the UTF nodelist project. He does not
send two different segments. But his segment is not pure ASCII, it
contain some characters in Latin-1. So for the ASCII list, the ZC's
MakNl substitutes question marks for the non ASCII characters. For
the UTF list, they are passed "as is". But that was only was
noticed after I started my weekly error report.

No. Here in Western Europe the default code page for DOS was 850. That is still the case in the Windows CLI. In the Linux community Latin-1 is popular.

ASCII is a subset of nearly all charactersets in use, with the exception of the obsolete national 7 bit character sets.

I recall Björn mentioning that is is Latin-1. But does it mnatter? The point is that it is NOT UTF-8 and therefore an error in he UTF nodelist.
