I am showing an ip addr on that particular box and can ping it from outside of the network using its fqdn as well as its local ip from inside the network.

I got sbbs back up by specifically restarting sbbs ( not sure why reboot did not get this result) anyhow tailing the syslog I had a very high incidence of web activity and I have received a note from my hub that spam was coming through my system into the echo's. I commented out web stuff in sbbs.ini so that I am not connected via http? Should this be enough?

No, set "AutoStart=false" in the [web] section of the sbbs.ini file. Commenting out or removing the web section from the file would just
revert to defaults (with the web server enabled).
