I got sbbs back up by specifically restarting sbbs ( not sure why reboot did not get this result) anyhow tailing the syslog I had a very high incidence of web activity and I have received a note from my hub that spam was coming through my system into the echo's. I commented out web stuff in sbbs.ini so that I am not connected via http? Should this be enough?

new users shouldn't be able to post anyways. always manually verify everyone. even the super secretive user who doesn't want to share anything will create an account using something like fake@email.com instead of a real looking jim159315@gmail.com one (hint: why is it 'jim' when the real name they chose is Mark? you get the idea..) or the name will be funny (e.g. 'Phil McCrackin')

they will also complain (or politely ask) if they can have post access..

but the best way to know a web user is a fake one though? they create an account.

I'm just explaining what that error means. You could experiment with differnet Interface address values in your ctrl/sbbs.ini file.

No, set "AutoStart=false" in the [web] section of the sbbs.ini file. Commenting out or removing the web section from the file would just revert to defaults (with the web server enabled).

Wouldn't go quite that far... though I do have web newuser disabled. I've found that emailing the user their initial password cuts the majority of crap out. One of these days I'll get SMS/Text validation setup.
