There's no justifying it. These a-holes are out to police everything on the internet, to make sure that they 1) don't have any competition and
2) they ultimately get to monitor everyone's email.
A few months ago I set up a private email server for my wife. I set it up properly and I even ensured compliance with the latest security gimmicks (SPF,
DMARC, & DKIM.)

Yup. That was made clear a long time ago.
That's why I moved to Tutanota (just Tuta, now) for my email.
I would make sure your SPF record is correct. Gmail accounts have issues with mail from synchronet bbses and that is the #1 culprit.

I'm going to give them a try. I'm compiling a list of free email
providers that are willing to communicate with my private email server without hassle. So far, I've found one called "protonmail" to be
friendly with it.

Tutanota's not free. But I think the yearly fee is about only $1/week.
Remember the Google rule: If the service is free, YOU are the product.

Yes. Microsoft and Facebook both follow that rule too. I wonder what
they are going to do when people finally start to do to them what they
did to Democrats last year.
I've been using Linux since early 2000 and I won't go back to Windows
(at least on my personal hardware). I dropped gmail for anything other than my Android device login. I use Brave as my browser. Tutanota for
my email. I don't install things like Facebook on my phone - because
they can, and do, track your movements (that's why they push for you to install Messenger).
Am I invisible? Certainly not. But I'm significantly less public than most people.

I have a private email server set up with Postfix (open source email server for Linux.) With Postfix, I'm able to send/receieve email with a simple text-based email client called Mutt. But I have yet to properly configure Dovecot (for IMAP) and Roundcube (for webmail.) Once I get
that stuff working I'll be ready to cut the cord from gmail.
Good. Less is more. Once I get this email server up to par, my only potential spies will be the owners of the web hosting company that I
use, but I doubt that they'd care to read my personal email.

You never know.

It's not the hosting company who will want to read my mail, but it's
the other elitists who will try to infiltrate the hosting companies (another institution for them to ruin.)
I expect that some day the elitists are going to shut down the internet
in favor of some private new protocol anyway.

I doubt that because:
1. The people who are intelligent enough to do that, simply won't. Or
will subvert it in some way where it won't work correctly. Remember
that Elitists are dumb.
2. The Elitsts are a very small percentage of the population. Having
99% of the population pissed at you all at the same time is a really bad life choice.
