• The "Big announcement"

From Aaron Thomas@1:342/202 to All on Wed Jan 22 05:38:38 2025
Trump's big announcement yesterday was disappointing to me.

It was an announcement that he's investing $100 billion dollars in "AI Infrastructure."

It disappoints me because "AI Infrastructure" equals "big waste of money" to average people. Nobody, not even Trump, ever explains the significance of AI, just "AI this, and AI that, and $100 billionm for AI."

Here's the part that my little brain does get: AI = development. How can it cost $100 billion to do any sort of development? That isn't explained either.

I am one of Trump's biggest fans, but I am starting to worry about the possibility of him being compromised. He hasn't really fixed anything yet and we're already spending $100 billion on something that I thought was leftist jargon.

It was an announcement that he's investing $100 billion dollars in "AI Infrastructure."

I think that was already announced sometime last week.

I don't know about leftist jargon, but it is a term that a lot of
politicians and business management like to throw around because it sounds forward-thinking and futuristic. Unfortunately, I believe only a few
really understand what it is capable of (I do not fully for sure).

Infrastructure is expensive. Large companies are literally buying nuclear power plants just to power datacenters for generative AI and machine learning.

Training these models uses literal datacenters worth of servers, running 24/7 for months.

generating responses based on the model is not computationally inexpensive either.

You're not alone. I asked a lot of people about AI and nobody knows what its all about. Not even the techiest of people.

While Biden was president I was confident that he was going to make this exact same type of announcement, but now I'm hearing it from my Orange God and I'm feeling a little backstabbed.

Do you happen to know if it's us (taxpayers) making this investment? I'm not clear as to why Trump made the announcement.

I get what you're saying about AI data centers and their cost. Now we need to figure out if it's worth the cost and whether or not it's at our own expense. Because those details are as convoluted as the significance of AI itself. ):

Lots of people attack cops though. BLM normalized it. I'm more hurt about Biden commuting the sentences of 2 convicted cop killers.

My point is that AI investment doesn't necessairly mean "AI making everyone's lives easier". But it does mean that the process of trying
to make AI good for everyone will cause unknown advancements to happen that certainly will probably everyone.

I talk a lot of trash about it, but for the longest time I couldn't figure out how to make an AJAX login, and Google's AI assistant (or whatever they call it) gave me solid instructions yesterday and I was really impressed. It showed me 2 ways of doing it (XMLHttpRequest and AJAX.)

I tried following peoples' articles on it and they were all crap (mostly) compared to Google's AI advice. I don't know if they realize that this accelerates productivity instead of slowing it down like their web frameworks do.

The AI "assistant" that we can use at work was garbage and got in the way more than it helped. But it all depends.

AI's are like "idiot savants". I wouldn't ask a medical AI about retirement financial planning, for example. But an AI that's been trained on what "good" Javascript code is would probably do really good with Javascript questions.

But now we are in to AI bias because they have to be told what "good Javascript" is.

I tried following peoples' articles on it and they were all crap

They probably do. Most of us developers never reinvent the wheel. We usually take a wheel that someone else has developed, and has shown that it works well, and change it to meet our needs.

Google AI simply repackaged that work.

I'm surprised that Google allows their AI assistant to help people with web development needs. They've put a ton of work into sabotaging productivity (Wordpress, pagespeed insights, search console, AMP pages, PWAs, APKs, Angular, etc.)

They get people playing around with all that crap, just to waste their time under the guise of "improving the user experience" and "making things easier."

With Google's AI or some other AI implementation?

I get thrilled when I get the opportunity to ask my 2 nerdy IT professional friends about stuff, but they are literally starting to get replaced by AI!

Google used to just give you the "most relevant" search result, but now it gives (mostly) solid advice. I think that's great. (Not great how they collude with the WEF to kill us though.)
