Quoting Joe Mackey to Nancy Backus on 06-13-19 07:04 <=-
So... I've been up to the Pond for close to a week, and pecking at
messages when I've had some free time around transporting my kid around
the area until his Jeep was up and running... No internet access up here
at all at the camp, so upload will have to wait until I return home.. :)
I just kept a semi in sight and followed him, hoping he was going
in the same general direction I was. :)
And, I trust that he was....? ;) Were there reasonable detour signs posted... or did you have to guess
As I wend my way around the country its a measure of both.
What about in that particular case...?
MI and TX were probably the best with detour warnings, signs, when
it ended, etc. They were actually the best with road signs period.
I've not driven in either of those two states, I don't think...
I think it was Indiana where the road forked and nothing. Both
well used and busy, both leading to businesses, etc.
One of these days, I might be driving there... we lived there (in Crawfordsville) for 2 years when I was a little kid... I'd like to see
if I could find the house we lived in then... :)
Whenever I come to an unmarked fork in the road I generally take the
wrong one.
Almost sounds like you should just take the road that your head tells
you not to take.... <G>
Most places will have the road one wants sign just past the fork.
Some states one can drive for miles without any signs at all and go far afield then have to find some connecting road or back track.
That can waste a lot of time... and/or lead to some interesting explorations.... <G>
That's one time I really am glad to have a real map in the car,
preferably one that shows ALL the roads.... ;)
Since I try to stay off the interstates AMAP, finding a good state
map is tough.
That's why I patronize AAA.... Generally I can get a stack of maps
before I leave on a trip, from broad coverage to city maps... and a nice
bag to stash them all in... For this most recent trip (to Montreal
Airport to pick up the kid and then to our camp), I got a map of the Northeastern States and Provinces, a map of Canada, a map of Quebec
Province, and a map of Montreal... I'd also have gotten a map of Ontario Province but they were out of stock, and it was only a couple days
before I was leaving... As a AAA member, I can stop at any AAA office anywhere, and get local (and any other) maps for free, too... I got a
good detailed map of Baltimore that way...
Sometimes a motel near the state line will offer them.
Most states have welcome centres with free maps, all but one were only located on the interstates.
I guess I'd noticed that.... but then I tend to use the interstates more
than you, especially for travel inter-state....
One place I stopped sold real paper maps and paid for one only to
find where I was going (a few miles away) had them for free. :(
That was a bummer... Another good reason to have gotten them beforehand
at AAA.... ;) But there was really no way to have known that they'd be available later for free....
Joe (in El Dorado, AR)
You are certainly getting around... :)
