Any Game of Thrones (GoT) readers or viewers here? In the last episode (without giving out any spoilers) one character refers to another as "the keeper of our memories". This echo is Memories.. this is my clever segue into a new topic. :)

I am totally astonished at the vast number and diversity of characters that George R.R. Martin portrays in his epic series. I would imagine that he has a large family/geneology-tree diagram on a wall to help him keep track of all relations.

I started following the GoT tv series, and "cheated" by looking for specific story lines in the books to get more details. There is so much more complexity, and great dialog in the books than in the tv series.

Although the tv series has come to an imagined conclusion by the film team, the book series has not. The author may surely produce an alternative (and maybe an even more satisfying) ending.

Clever enough... <G> I've not seen any episodes, merely heard about
the series.... I might have read an early volume of the series, a long
time ago, but I'm not sure if I did or not.... I've read a lot of
science fiction/fantasy over the years.... :)

Possibly... or at least a chart that he keeps current... like any family historian might have to do to keep track of a large (and rapidly
growing) extended family... :)

Books often have a lot more richness than TV shows or movies.... it's
often surprising (and gratifying) when a show or movie actually does a creditable job of covering an entire book... :)

Have you read the Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch? Currently:

[1] The Lies of Locke Lamora
[2] Red Seas Under Red Skies
[3] The Republic of Thieves
[4] The Thorn of Emberlain: scheduled for late 2021!

If not.. It's pseudo-pirate sci-fi/fantasy adventure. I am sure you know how to dig up reviews if you are curious to learn more. People who have explored Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan have let me know that they appreciated the steer to Scott Lynch. It is only a trilogy sofar, unlike the +12 volume series of the other authors, but it's hard to be patient for #4!

Another amazing story series: Kingkiller Chronicles, by Patrick Rothfuss.

[2] Wise Man's Fear (Day 2)
[3] <TBD>

Each volume (and both are over 700pages) covers the events of one day! This is another series that one just can't seem to wait to continue.

Books often have a lot more richness than TV shows or movies.... it's often surprising (and gratifying) when a show or movie actually does a creditable job of covering an entire book... :)

I can't think of too many film/book combos that I've come across that were "true and complete" to the original book, and ofcourse I wouldn't be able to remember what I saw.

The first Harry Potter film followed the events in the first book VERY close and complete.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is another book/film near match.

But.. films being typically limited to about 100 minutes couldn't possibly be "complete" in every detail, and that is appreciated.

For a crazy "study" I watched all the film adaptations of The Great Gatsby a few years ago. Each film deviated from the original story in their own way and even injected a director's own ideas. For me, bottom line: the book is often better - where my own imagination can generate the scenes and settings.

Not read any of those... haven't been getting any books like that
recently... have enough on my plate as it is... We do subscribe to
Analog (Science Fiction/Science Fact), and I've been able to assuage the addiction with that... ;)

I've gotten almost to the point that I don't want to start a new series
for fear that that will turn out to be the case... I hate having to
wait... <G> When there's a serial in Analog, I'll often wait to start
it until all the installments have arrived, only read everything else in
each issue.... :)

Yes, I remember reading and seeing that one... and that was well done...

Indeed crazy, but I'm sure that it was entertaining all the same... :)

Agreed. I remember, way back when I was in high school, my sister and I stopped in at the local movie house on the way home, and saw the epic
movie Gone With the Wind... We were so taken by it that we then stopped
at the library branch on the way home from the movie, and checked out
the book. She read the book straight through, finishing at about
bedtime, and handed it to me... I read through the night, and finished
by the morning... That was another that was rather true to the book...
but the book was indeed richer, since one couldn't possibly get it all
in... even though the movie was longer than normal... :)
