Maybe we need to revitalize the backbone list and cut 20-30% of the confrences. If people have an urge for some of the other echoes there
    can be an alternate backbone.

I've thought the echo list is ripe for pruning. Trying to get
moderators of empty echoes to give up is a lost cause, so maybe
starting with a new backbone is the way to go?

No backbone is needed, we don't have toll charges (for the most part).
No one trusts anyone to power any more, so build a mesh design. No
moderators, since there's no such thing as a feed cut any more.

What other 20th century limitations can we ignore with this new network-within-a-network?

    Would it work?

I know we likely could do some unofficial echoes and if they have wide appeal, then they can be promoted to the full backbone. I know some good echoes got killed because no one bothered to elist them like MUSIC.
