    GENERAL ARTICLES =================================================================

The Corona pandemic is real (Part-2)
    Ward Dossche - 2:292/854

In Volume 37, Number 16 of April 20th 2020 I published an article
    describing my Covid19 experience entitled:

    "The Corona pandemic is real".

There have been requests by readers about "How does the Corona
pandemic story continue for you?" ... people want to know in
general how one's life is, and how it remains affected.

My previous article ended on April 15th with the words

"5 more days of quarantine when I write this ...".

    So what's to be said?

For starters, I think that in all aspects I have been very lucky.
There have been people who were way worse, people that died ...
while I live. As my deceased friend Julie Hall once told me
"Nomatter how bad it gets, there is always something something to
    be thankful for ..."

Thankful for realizing in time what was up, thankful for the
healthcare system in this country which caught me perfectly in my
fall and had the exact facilities available to treat me, thankful
for my family who rebounded to the bad tidings in a wonderful way
and kept their spirits high though they were faced with a very
problematic situation for which none of us were prepared ... more
specifically out of the blue with no prior signs my kids risked
losing both their parents virtually on the same day ... it came as
a shock for them. I'm thankful for friends who thought I was an
emotional wreck and needed to be uplifted from bleak thoughts, I'm
thankful for people like Pierre who mailed me every day and Kees
who took over nodelist production immediately as at the time we
had no idea where my hospitalisation would lead us to (we had this
back-up system available for years and now it was proving its
worth), I am thankful for the hospital staff (not just nurses or
doctors, but the aides serving meals and cleaning staff as well ...)
I will forget people for which I'm sorry... So, I'm sorry if I
    forgot you.

The quarantine ... My wife and I had a not-used apartment which my
kids prepared as the designated quarantine-unit.

The day of the homecoming we filed immediately up the stairs and
while it was only on the 2nd floor (in the US that would be the
3rd floor) I was out of breath after one set of stairs. It was
immediately clear: being discharged from the hospital did not
constitute being cured, but rather a next step in the healing
    process.
We were serviced by the kids doing the foodshopping and meal-
preparation ... it was kinda an hotel ... without it being a hotel.
The kids took well care of us.

The coughing was still ominously present though, at any time of
the day there was slime, and coughing, and more slime or throwing
up. But after a while you notice it's getting more infrequent and
less violent. It was around that time I coined the idea that you
do not know how much slime can be in a person's body.

Life in quarantine went by uneventful ... I never saw my Fidonet-
machine during that period and the network didn't burst .. ? ...
Sometimes stories reach you about social interaction gone horrible
wrong during quarantine, couples fighting, parents fighting with
their kids, dogs pooping on the carpet, the cat vomiting in bed ...
None of that happened here. There was a laptop, there was WiFi,
there was Netflix, there was an HDMI-connection to a big screen ...
[may I recommend the movie "Two Popes" on Netflix? Excellent.]

Really, there is nothing bad I can tell about and the 2 weeks of
quarantine just flew by. I feared it was going to be a disaster
but actually it went quite well.

Immediately after quarantine ended April 20th I took my bike and
went on ever longer trips (PTL for a flat countryside). It was
obvious that Covid19 had done a job on the lungs, could not get
the volume of air as before so I had to flex the muscles and push,
make it hard, get the heart pumping and the lungs breathing. You
could feel a sensation of pain in the lungs and the question was
whether I lost part of the breathing capability or were these my
lungs catching air again after all that time.

I think it was the latter. But at that point there was still a lot
of ground to be covered, a lot of room for improvement. At those
moments, when pushing my limits, there was a cough coming up and
you were always looking around with a scary thought of "Is someone
going to hear me? Are they going to call the authorities and
report me?" ... So at one particular instance in the middle of the
hay fields I needed to cough, I looked around and there was
nobody. Good thing, the cough was very violent with a mouthful of
slime ... had anybody seen this, I probably would've been thrown
    in the slammer.

Anyway, improvement was manifestly visible and I am totally
convinced that drinking a Leffe-Dark every evening as medication
really helped. After all, alcohol disinfects.

Three weeks after entering the quarantine the coughing was gone
however sneezing still seemed to tear my lungs apart.

Another problem that surfaced was the loss of muscle. The time at
the hospital plus the 2 weeks of quarantine had made me lose some
13kg (27lbs about). Now for those that know me, one could say that
"On a tree so fully laden, the loss of two or three apples is not
noticed" ... but then you notice it is muscle tissue. As long as
you can sit down, you are OK but the moment you stand up you feel
shaky. So exercising the legs and arms to create strength is also
    part of the deal.

So where am I now today (June 7th 2020)?

Doing pretty good actually. The symptoms of the disease are gone,
no more coughing, no more slime. Walking up and down the stairs
has vastly improved, the use of arms too.

The next step is in about a month when I need to make an
appointment with a lung specialist to evaluate my situation. After
    that we'll now more.

Am I now healed? Do I have antibodies? Can I still be infected?
    Can I infect someone else?

Your guess is as good as mine because this Covid19-event is so new
that the WHO (World Health Organization) and others are still
writing the rule-book for it. We know just a little and there is
still a lot to be learned.

The disease itself will only be beaten when the immunity of the
world population is vastly improved and the world population has
been vaccinated, even the anti-vaxxers. But personally I fear it
will always stay with us and continuous vaccination of newborn
babies will be necessary, something like how Polio is being dealt
with... Not-vaccinating needs to be declared a crime, whether
one's religion is opposing it or not.

As someone who has been confronted with the virus and the disease,
I have no problem wearing the mouthmask anywhere and following the
instructions issued by virologists and my government (although
with hindsight, they could have done a better job). I'm a tad
annoyed seeing how little attention people are paying in vastly
populated areas, supermarkets, stores, shopping districts
believing that the threat is gone and this is a serious mistake.

Covid19 still is an invisible enemy and we really don't have any
ammunition to shoot at it with. Protective measures will need
to remain in force for a pretty long time and I don't know how
long that time is going to be, but I guess at least until a
    working vaccine hits the market.

For the record, I have been treated with "Hydroxychloroquine" as
well as tens of thousands of other people. I live because of it".

Maybe I'll publish a 3rd and final instalment of this story when
    the lung-doctor clears me.

    Until then ... stay safe.

    Notes:

To make an IPv6 connection to a node connected via 6to4 tunneling
one may have to force the mailer into IPv6 (-6 option in binkd's
node config for binkd up to 1.1a-96, -64 option for binkd 1.1a-97
and up when compiled with AF_FORCE=1). If the destination address
is a 6to4 tunnel address (2002::/16) many OSs default to IPv4 if
    an IPv4 address is present.
