• Game States it Cannot Open COM3

From Tim Whitson@1:105/500 to All on Mon Mar 4 21:17:58 2024
    I'm getting the error message:

    EXEC/DOSXTRN
The system cannot open COM3 port requested by the application.
Choose 'Close" to terminate the application.

I'm trying to run the game Nukewar 3.80 under Synchronet, Win10, 32bit. I had 3.50 running just fine but I can't get 3.80 running.

    Any ideas?

if you have problems you need to post your doorgame configs

    Which version of Synchronet?

By default the Synchronet Virtual UART driver emulates COM1 (not COM3). But this is configurable:
    https://wiki.synchro.net/config:sbbsexec.ini

However, it'd be better to configure your door game to use COM1. And FOSSIL (int14h) is generally more performant that COM/UART I/O, if you care about performance.

    C:\SBBS\XTRN\NUKEWAR2
    C:\SBBS\XTRN\NUKEWAR2
    1
    C:\SBBS\NODE1

Nothing special. I don't see anywhere to tell the game what comport to use. I'm sure it's getting it from the drop file, which says COM1.

okay looks like someone ran into this issue before.

    http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:door:nukewars

    Nuke Wars
    SCFG Settings
    Name Nuke Wars
    Internal Code NUKEWARS
    Start-up Directory ../xtrn/nukewars
    Command Line nuke.exe node%#.cfg
    Clean-up Command Line
    Execution Cost None
    Access Requirements
    Execution Requirements
    Multiple Concurrent Users Yes
    Intercept Standard I/O No
    Native (32-bit) Executable No
    Modify User Data No
    Execute on Event No
BBS Drop File Type RBBS/QuickBBS DORINFO1.DEF
Place Drop File In Node Directory
:!: Note: This setup assumes that you have created separate configuration files for each node, called node1.cfg, node2.cfg, etc.

    Door Specific Instructions
When you try to run Nuke Wars, you may get an error on your BBS machine saying that COM3 cannot be opened. In order to resolve that, make a copy of sbbsexec.ini from Synchronet's exec directory to your Nuke Wars directory, then edit sbbsexec.ini in your Nuke Wars directory with a text editor. Change the ComPort setting (in the [UART] section) to specify 3:

    [UART]
    ComPort=3

Wow, that did work. I did get ahold of the author of this game and he said he'd release a generic registration for all to use. I'll let you know when
    I have it.

I'm glad nightfox took the time to add that entry.

also sometimes it's better to use dorinfo1.def instead of door.sys because there's different versions of door.sys and some doorkits expect the longer one

Thanks for getting in touch with the author.
