The European Commission is close to a provisional trade agreement with the United States that would exempt commercial aviation from certain import duties. Aircraft manufacturer Airbus, in particular, would benefit from this, sources told Bloomberg news agency. Several other major industries, such as the German automotive industry, would also be exempt from the tariffs.
In response to the news, Airbus's share price has risen by almost 2 percent. It would also be good news for American airlines that have placed large orders for Airbuses, such as Delta Air Lines. While the European aircraft manufacturer builds narrowbody aircraft in the US, widebody aircraft are produced exclusively in Europe. Without a deal, these would become significantly more expensive.
Details about the provisional trade agreement are not yet available.
