It's probably the influence of room decor designers. They would even
use books as a form of "decoration" - a couple of trends has been to
color coordinate books on shelves or just place then with the spines facing *inside*! Mission accomplished when the room is just supposed
to look like a study, but not have to be a functional one.

Same thing with the visible labels on technology devices - hide them,
when the device can just as easily be controlled with a remote or an
app.

I have a rather old 32" LCD Tv. The button controls are on the side of the frame.

Modern shows to tend to promote such decors, books purely as decoration. I think most of the designers don't have taste, and are snake oil salesmen. I see these renovation shows, and they oooh and aaah over what are really plain rooms with little creativity or comfort.

But people see it on TV, and think that it must be the mode of the day.

I do agree that some designers tend to be quite superficial with decor, especially the ones who use books as decor and just design plain stuff
for the sake of it being plain.

However, I do think that there's some merit to simple design it's just that it's hard to pull a good one off because there's so little to
design to without stripping the very thing you're ought to design.

I agree. Good interior design doesn't end up messy and cluttered.
