    Thank you for trying out the Kitymail evaluation program.
    You are free to use this version for as long as you live.

    I now need to anoy you somehow so you will think about registering Kitymail. I know, I think I will delay starting the program for 30 seconds plus
    10 sec. for each month it's been since you picked up the last demo key

    If that seens too long, Get a new key from Someplace to Start BBS.
    Or better still, Regester this program.
    About to delay 2970 sec.
    Thats because your key is 25 years and -6 months old. 2970..........2960..........2950..........2940..........2930..........

    Some guy called "John Long" whose contact details no longer exist ("John.Long@1:100/630" or "John.Long@s2s.com").

    According to him 25 years and 6 months equates to a 2970 seconds unregistered delay.

    According to him 25 years and 6 months equates to a 2970 seconds unregistered delay.

    no, that is incorrect... that's not "according to him"... that's a
    defect in the program from using too small a variable type to store
    the number of seconds in... effectively what you are seeing is modulo arithmetic also known as rollover where the counter rolls over to the lowest end of the range when the value exceeds the maximum value...

    Nah.

    The jerk knew what he was doing.

    He says so himself in the nagware splash screen:

    ==================================================
    I now need to anoy you somehow so you will think about registering Kitymail.
    I know, I think I will delay starting the program for 30 seconds plus
    10 sec. for each month it's been since you picked up the last demo key ==================================================

    The key file is dated:

    ==================================================
    12/12/1996 09:13p 52 DEMO.KEY ==================================================

    which is 24 years, 1 month and 25 days from when I ran it. (So it appears the file contains a date that is itself at least 1.5 years old).

    His short-sightedness is confirmed in the documentation:

    ==================================================
    The demo / evaluation versions will have delays and annoying noises built in to encourage you to register KITYMAIL. The delay on start up will originally be 30 sec but will increase by 10 seconds each month, based on the age of your KITYMAIL key file. Other delays and annoying noise will occur every 100th message processed. Newer version of the KITYMAIL key file will be available on the "Someplace to Start" BBS and will be distributed freely to other BBS's. Feel free to get a newer key for KITYMAIL whenever the delay gets too long for you or better still, why not register KITYMAIL?

    Merely wanting or needing KityMail to work did not provide the necessary motivation for change. A loathing of authors who implement stupid delays in their software did that, and therefore caused the change.
