    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...D4/Saturday - Northern Plains...
A strong trough will advance into the Northwest CONUS on Saturday
with a strong mid-level jet extending from the Great Basin to the
northern Plains. A lee cyclone will develop across eastern Wyoming
into western South Dakota. Southerly flow will strengthen and advect
low to mid 60s dewpoints northward. This will lead to strong
instability by the late afternoon across the western Dakotas. There
is still some uncertainty with the evolution of the upper-level
trough which will have some impact in the timing and location of the
severe weather threat on Saturday. At this time, have confined the
15% area to where the greatest severe weather threat appears likely
Saturday afternoon/evening, but this area may need to be refined in
    future outlooks.

    ...Day 5 and Beyond...
Severe weather will be possible across portions of the Northern
Plains into the Upper Midwest Sunday and into next week. However, predictability remains too low to highlight areas in this timeframe.
The presence of strong to very strong instability across a large
region with multiple shortwave troughs emerging from the primary
trough centered over the West will surely support severe weather
potential most days. However, probabilities for specific areas
cannot be added until the upper-level pattern becomes more clear.

    Valid 281200Z - 031200Z

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...D4/Sun - Northern Plains...
A strong mid-level jet streak is expected to round the base of the
western CONUS trough on Sunday and emerge across the northern
Plains. As this occurs, the lee cyclone across eastern Colorado will
deepen further and move northward into the northern Plains by 12Z
Monday. Continued northward moisture transport will result in strong
to very strong instability ahead of the surface low across the
northern Plains. Forecast soundings show a very favorable
environment and an uncapped airmass by evening. Forecast specifics
remain nebulous as individual shortwave troughs will impact the
timing and coverage of storms, but severe storms are possible at
some point Sunday afternoon to Sunday night across eastern North
    Dakota and into northwest Minnesota.

    ...D5/Mon - Upper Midwest...
The primary shortwave trough and associated mid-level jet streak is
forecast to shift northeastward across the northern Plains and
toward the Upper Midwest on Monday. This will occur atop a very
unstable airmass across a broad area of the Upper Midwest. Severe
storms are possible, but the exact magnitude and extent of the
threat will become more clear once individual shortwave troughs
associated with this upper trough become better sampled.

Beyond Day 5, the upper-level pattern becomes a bit more uncertain.
Overall, a general pattern with a trough persisting over the
Northwest or northern Rockies and a ridge over the Plains or Midwest
seems most likely. However, the differences in amplitude and
location of these features limit predictability. Within this broader
pattern, severe weather will be most likely from the northern
Rockies to the northern Plains and also potentially on the eastern
periphery of the upper ridge across the Northeast. At this time,
predictability is too low to add any probability areas.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper-level trough centered within the Intermountain West will
continue pivoting northeast through the northern Plains on Monday.
This feature will be fairly meridional in character. The strongest
height falls are likely to occur after 00Z within North Dakota. To
the east, an amplified upper ridge will be in place. Moisture
advection will continue in the upper Mississippi Valley given the
southerly low levels winds. Strong to extreme buoyancy is expected
to develop as a result. While this pattern does suggest potential
for severe weather, there is still uncertainty as to where the most
favorable environment will be given the influence of convection that
could occur late on Sunday night into early Monday morning. The 15%
area has been maintained this cycle given the potential for a an MCS
to develop, but modification seems likely in the coming days given
the mesoscale details that will play a large role in where severe
    weather ultimately occurs.

From Tuesday onward, the strongest mid-level flow will shift into
Canada as the western upper trough becomes more broad. A large
reservoir of strong to extreme buoyancy is still forecast to be in
place underneath the ridge. While areas of severe weather are
possible, they will be highly tied to mesoscale features as larger
scale features will become more nebulous and deep-layer shear will
weaken through the remainder of the period. As a result,
    predictability is reduced.

    ...DISCUSSION...
The upper-level pattern from the middle of the new week onward will
be relatively stagnant. The upper ridge in the East will remain
entrenched while broad cyclonic flow will persist in the West before potentially breaking down by the weekend. This will drive a belt of
weak to moderate mid-level southwesterlies across the
central/northern Plains. Repeated lee trough development along with
the surface high in the East will maintain rich moisture across
parts of the Plains and especially the Midwest/Southeast. With
large-scale features generally being weak, convective development
will largely be reliant on terrain features, subtle shortwave
troughs, or surface boundaries. With this pattern, at least low
severe potential will exist within the northern Plains into the
Upper Midwest into next weekend. Predictability will remain low,
however, as large-scale features will be weaker and the influence of
prior convection will increase with each successive day.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Relatively little change is expected in the upper-level pattern from
mid to late this week. A broad trough in the West will bring
southwesterly flow across the Rockies and parts of the Plains. In
the East, an upper ridge will persist. During the weekend, models
are in general agreement that the upper ridge will flatten and
broaden across the southern U.S. This pattern will favor the
maintenance of a very moist airmass within parts of the Plains into
the Midwest and Southeast. The lack of more notable mid-level and
surface features decrease predictability with regard to where severe
convection may occur. That being said, subtle surface
boundaries/shortwave troughs may promote convective development each
day within parts of the Plains/Midwest. Trends in model guidance
will continue to be monitored, but confidence remains low in placing
    severe probabilities.

    ...DISCUSSION...
The broad trough in the West and ridge in the East will persist
through the remainder of the week. A moist airmass across much of
the CONUS east of the Rockies will support repeated days of
convective activity. Large-scale forcing will remain weak, but
shortwave troughs emanating from the western trough will promote
development within the Plains and the Upper Midwest where a stalled
surface boundary will be positioned. Both Thursday and Friday show
potential for MCS development from Nebraska into the Dakotas. Friday
will likely have a more prominent shortwave trough as a lifting
mechanism. Where this potential severe weather will be focused is
not certain given the expected convection that will occur each day
prior. For Saturday, some models show the shortwave trough moving
into the Upper Midwest where another round of convection may occur.
Severe probabilities are certainly possible in the coming days as
    confidence continues to increase.

Another area to watch this week will be the Northeast. Here,
stronger northwesterly flow at mid levels will continue into part of
the weekend. Depending on how the shortwave trough evolves in the
Upper Midwest, this feature may eventually move into the Northeast
and promote thunderstorm development late this weekend into next
week. Predictability remains too low for highlights, however.

    Valid 031200Z - 081200Z

    ...DISCUSSION...
Upper-level flow is expected to become more zonal across the CONUS
this Friday. The upper ridge within the East will lose amplitude and
develop westward and amplify once again into early next week. The
exact structure of the upper ridge does vary within model guidance.
At the surface, a mostly stationary boundary will continue to be modified/reinforced by convection occurring along/near it on
preceding days. As the upper ridge builds in the West, this boundary
will likely get pushed farther south within the areas east of the
Mississippi by the developing surface high in the Upper
Midwest/Great Lakes. Moisture will then be transported farther
north/west in the Plains/High Plains beginning sometime this
weekend. The general theme for the extended forecast will be where
subtle shortwaves/MCVs will propagate and spur convection along the
    boundary.

For Friday, another MCS is possible along the surface boundary
similar to D3/Thursday. Uncertainty in how Thursday's convection
will impact the location of the boundary and most favorable
environment reduces confidence on where the greatest severe threat
will be. Into the weekend and early next week, some severe threat is
possible in parts of the eastern CONUS in association with MCV from
convection in the Plains/Midwest. Additional severe storms could
occur as northwesterly flow aloft develops in the High Plains. There
are still enough differences in the upper-level pattern between
medium range guidance that predictability of any higher threat
    corridors is low.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Flow aloft will become more zonal by this weekend as the upper-level
ridge flattens and begins to shift/build westward. The strongest
mid-level winds will be present across the northern tier of the
CONUS. An upper-level low in the vicinity of the Canadian Maritimes
will bring a belt of stronger mid-level winds across the Northeast.
Some southward movement of a surface boundary can be expected within
the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley/Mid-Atlantic this weekend into early
next week. At the same time, northwesterly flow aloft will develop
over the High Plains along with moisture pushing farther northwest
    into the region.

Severe potential will largely be driven by mesoscale features such
as localized convergence along stalled/weak boundaries as well as
MCVs from prior convection. The airmass across much of the Plains
into the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic will be quite unstable and
strong heating will occur underneath the increasingly muted upper
ridge. Subtle lift from shortwave troughs may promote greater
convective coverage in parts of the Mid-Atlantic early next week.
However, the stronger, but still modest, shear will be displaced
from the most buoyant airmass. Additional convection will be
possible along the surface boundary within the Midwest/Ohio Valley,
but shear will generally be weak. More organized convection may also
develop within the northwest flow pattern in the High Plains, but predictability remains low as to where this will eventually occur.

    0355 AM CDT Thu Jul 02 2026

    Valid 051200Z - 101200Z

    ...DISCUSSION...
Model trends have been for the upper ridge to amplify less in the
West than in previous cycles. This will allow southwesterly
mid-level winds to persist longer in the Intermountain region. In
the East, a shortwave trough will approach the
Northeast/Mid-Atlantic on Sunday before cyclonic flow remains in the
regions through the middle of the following week. Upper ridging will
stay within the central CONUS before flattening as a couple of
shortwave troughs move over the northern tier states. Moderate to
strong buoyancy is expected to remain south a stalled surface
boundary in the Southeast. The cyclonic flow in the West will
eventually bring moisture farther northwest into the High Plains.
While predictability is generally low, at least localized severe
potential will exist near the surface boundaries and any MCVs that
may be present. High Plains thunderstorms are also possible. Where
greater shear/lift exists with the western shortwave troughs, severe
    potential could increase.

    ...Mid-Atlantic...
With the approach of modest mid-level height falls on Sunday, storm
coverage will likely increase from Saturday both along the stalled
surface front and within the Blue Ridge. Given a similar environment
to Saturday, a 15% severe risk was added. Damaging wind gusts are
    likely the primary hazard.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Medium-range guidance suggests that a modest mid-level ridge, along
an axis from the eastern Great Basin into the Upper Midwest by early
next week, may gradually become suppressed by a low-amplitude short
wave trough emerging from the Great Basin by the middle of next
week. It appears that this will occur as a much more substantive
trough and embedded low, within the stronger westerlies confined to
the higher latitudes, progress inland across British Columbia and
the Canadian Rockies. This could be accompanied by some potential
for organized severe thunderstorm development across parts of
eastern Montana into the Dakotas by next Tuesday and/or Wednesday,
but enough spread persists within latest model output to preclude 15
percent or greater severe probabilities at this time.

A preceding trough within the stronger westerlies is forecast to
slowly progress east of the Canadian Prairies through Hudson Bay,
Ontario, Quebec and the remainder of the eastern Canadian Provinces
by late next week. It is possible that a corridor of boundary-layer
moistening and destabilization ahead of an associated cold front
could support increasing risk for thunderstorms across parts of the
lower Great Lakes through New England by next Thursday into Friday.
However, the extent of this potential, and the degree to which it
could pose a risk for damaging wind gusts remains uncertain at this
    time.

Otherwise, severe potential in lower-latitudes, if any, will likely
generally be associated with sub-synoptic developments yet to evolve
and of rather low predictability at this time range.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Based on the latest medium-range guidance, it appears that
considerable amplification within the flow across the mid- and
subtropical latitudes of the Pacific during this period may lead to
the evolution of an increasingly prominent high becoming centered
near or to the northeast of the Four Corners by early next weekend.
Surrounding ridging may encompass much of the Intermountain West
through Great Plains, as far north as the Canadian Prairies.

Associated monsoonal moisture return into parts of the Southwest may
be accompanied by increasing convective potential that could include
evolving clusters capable of producing strong to severe wind gusts.
However, much as will likely remain the case in preceding days
across and east of the Rockies, organized severe weather potential,
if any, will be strongly influenced by sub-synoptic developments yet
to evolve, and with low predictability at this extended time frame.

    ...DISCUSSION...
In the wake of a short wave trough pivoting inland of the British
Columbia coast by mid week, medium-range guidance continues to
indicate the gradual development of large-scale ridging across the
much of the Intermountain West through Great Plains and Mississippi
Valley late this week through next weekend. It appears that a
center of seasonably high mid-level heights will evolve and develop northeastward, west through north of the Four Corners, into northern
Colorado by the end of the period. Prior to and as this occurs,
this may be preceded by the transition of a generally zonal to
broadly cyclonic regime across and east of the northern Great Plains
through northern and middle Atlantic Seaboard, but embedded short
    wave developments remain rather unclear.

Regardless, it still appears that substantive potential for
organized severe thunderstorm development, if any, will largely
remain influenced by sub-synoptic developments yet to evolve, and of particularly low predictability at this extended time frame.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Medium-range model output continues to indicate the evolution of an increasingly prominent mid/upper high across the lower Colorado
Valley and Plateau late this week into next weekend, which may
continue expanding and encompassing a significant portion of the
interior U.S. by early next week. How far north and northeast this
builds remains unclear; however, a plume of very warm elevated
mixed layer air advecting on strengthening flow around the northern
through northeastern periphery of this anticyclonic regime will
contribute to an environment conditionally conducive to organized
    severe thunderstorm development.

It appears that this could focus anywhere from the central
Canadian/U.S. border vicinity through the Great Lakes into the
Northeast. By early next week (the Day 8-9 time frame), in
particular, at least some output suggests that a vigorous short wave
trough rounding the ridge may be accompanied by strong cyclogenesis,
which could promote widespread strong to severe thunderstorm
development across parts of New England into northern Mid Atlantic.
Given the uncertainties associated with the extended time frame and
model spread/discrepancies, severe weather probabilities remain less

    ...DISCUSSION...
Medium-range model output continues to indicate the evolution of an increasingly prominent mid/upper high across the lower Colorado
Valley and Plateau late this week into next weekend. It appears
likely that this will continue expanding and encompassing a
significant portion of the interior U.S. by early next week, as an
evolving larger-scale trough begins to dig across and southeast of
Hudson Bay. While there appears relatively small spread within and
among the various model output concerning this larger-scale
evolution, there is considerable spread concerning the migration of
one particularly notable short wave trough around the periphery of
    the ridge.

Of particular concern, it appears probable that a plume of very warm
elevated mixed-layer air will advect along the southern fringe of a
belt of intensifying flow around the northern through northeastern
periphery of the mid/upper ridge. As it does, coupled with
low-level moistening, this type of regime could support the periodic
evolution of organizing clusters, potentially including one or two
potentially long-lived, accompanied by swaths of damaging surface
    gusts.

It appears that this could focus anywhere from near and north of the
central Canadian/U.S. border vicinity through the Great Lakes into
the Northeast by early next week. However, do to lingering
uncertainty with the synoptic developments, and the generally low predictability of these mesoscale systems, in this type of regime at
this extended range, severe probabilities still appear less than 15
percent. However, depending on model trends, this could change in
    later outlooks for this period.

    ...DISCUSSION...
There remains a general consensus in medium-range guidance that a
prominent mid-level high will build further while developing across
and northeast of the Colorado Plateau through the middle Missouri
Valley this coming weekend into early next week, within elongating
larger scale ridging. A bit more uncertainty lingers concerning the
evolution of larger-scale troughing and embedded short wavelength
developments to the northeast and east of this feature into the
early to middle portion of next week, but it still appears that this
ridging may eventually become suppressed across the Great Lakes
    region.

As a plume of very warm elevated mixed-layer air advects along the
southern fringe of strengthening flow around the northern through
northeastern periphery of the mid/upper ridge, it may contribute to
an environment conducive to the initiation and evolution of
organizing thunderstorm clusters with potential to produce swaths of
damaging surface gusts. Based on latest guidance, this may tend to
initially remain north of the international border from the Great
Plains through the upper Great Lakes. However, due to spread within
and among the various model output, it remains unclear whether this
activity will pose a greater potential impact to portions of New
England or the lower Great Lakes into northern Mid Atlantic by next
    Tuesday or Wednesday.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Medium-range models continue to indicate that the center of strong
mid-level ridging building northeast of the Four Corners states will
shift across the middle Missouri Valley early next week, where it
may reach peak intensity by about Tuesday, before becoming
suppressed. Even as this commences, mid-level ridging in the
westerlies may be maintained near and north/northeast of the
international border, from the Great Plains through the Great Lakes,
while large-scale downstream troughing amplifies southeastward
    across the Northeast.

Associated with this evolution, a plume of very warm elevated
mixed-layer air still appears likely to advect on the southern
fringe of a belt of strengthening flow around the northern through
northeastern periphery of this ridging. As the nose of the warmer
air overspreads the Great Lakes region early next week, forcing for
ascent associated with warm advection could begin supporting
organizing thunderstorm clusters potentially impacting portions of
New England, and/or the lower Great Lakes through Mid Atlantic.

As guidance suggests that the westerlies will initially remain split
downstream of the ridge, and a potentially notable short wave trough
(and associated cold front) migrating around its periphery and
eventually suppressing it, it remains unclear how potential frontal
and pre-frontal convection will pan out on any particular day. Due
to both synoptic and sub-synoptic predictability issues, severe
probabilities remain at less than 15 percent in the day 6-8 time
frame. However, this probably will change in later outlooks closer
to this time period, when the potential for introducing unduly large
    forecast false alarm decreases.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Ensemble guidance continues to indicate that the western US
mid-level ridge will build into the north-central US during the
first part of the forecast period. Toward the middle and end of the
week, this ridge should retrograde westward as a series of mid-level
troughs move across the apex of the ridge in central Canada. One
particularly strong trough will impact New England on Tuesday into
    Wednesday.

    ... Tuesday/Day 5 ...

GEFS and EPS ensemble guidance is in remarkably good agreement that
a strong short-wave trough will approach New England during the day
on Tuesday and move across the region Tuesday night. Ahead of this
trough, both ensemble systems have mean surface temperatures in the
70Fs and 80Fs with surface dewpoints in the mid-to-upper-60Fs across
much of the area. The result will be MUCAPE values in the 1000-2000
J/kg range amidst seasonably strong vertical shear. Supporting this
are ensemble probabilities greater than 50 percent for the supercell
composite index to be greater than 1.

As the trough approaches New England, the expectation is for one or
more clusters of storms to develop during the afternoon across
portions of Quebec and move into and then across New England during
the late afternoon into evening/overnight hours. Although there is
some spread within the ensemble regarding the timing of the wave
moving across the area, with solutions ranging from afternoon to
overnight, the overall environment should remain favorable for
damaging thunderstorm winds to occur, even into the early overnight
    hours.

    ... Friday/Day 8 ...

Ensemble guidance is beginning to suggest some severe potential
across portions of the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic region.
This area is forecast to be on the eastern periphery of the strong
western US ridge and near the basal region of a long-wave trough
across eastern Canada and New England. Surface temperatures are
expected to range from the upper-80Fs to mid-90Fs with surface
dewpoint temperatures in the 60Fs. Parcel trajectories around the
western ridge do not favor much in the way of an elevated mixed
layer, so scattered thunderstorm development is likely. The
magnitude of the severe potential will likely rest on the strength
of the deep-layer shear and the number of storms.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Ensemble guidance continues to indicate that the CONUS-wide
mid-level ridge centered over the north-central United States will
build westward during the upcoming week in response to a series of
mid-level troughs moving through central Canada. These troughs will
help to carve out a seasonably strong trough across eastern Canada.
By the end of the week, the US ridge will be centered over the
Rockies with the eastern Canada trough centered over Quebec. The
result will be a strong mid-level height gradient (and strong
mid-level flow) stretching from the Upper Great Lakes southeast into
the Mid-Atlantic and encompassing New England.

    ... Tuesday/Day 4 -- New England ...

Multiple ensemble systems continue to support a favorable severe
weather environment being in place across New England on Tuesday.
Strong diurnal heating and southwesterly surface flow should allow
surface temperatures to warm into the mid-80Fs to perhaps low-90Fs
by late afternoon ahead of a seasonably strong surface cold front.
Ahead of the cold front, surface dewpoint temperatures should rise
into the 60Fs to perhaps 70Fs, leading to MUCAPE between 1000-2000
J/kg. Current thinking is that thunderstorms will develop along and
ahead of the surface cold front during the afternoon across Quebec
and move into New England during the late afternoon before
dissipating overnight. Strong vertical shear in excess of 50 knots
will combine with strong instability to support severe
thunderstorms. The most probable scenario is for one or more broken
lines of storms to move across the region, with perhaps a few
embedded supercells. All severe hazards seem possible at this time.

... Friday/Day 7 and Beyond -- Upper Great Lakes into the
    Mid-Atlantic ...

Strong northwest flow will be established between the previously
described western US ridge and eastern Canadian trough. Rich
boundary layer moisture is expected to be present to the south of a
residual cold front that will be draped somewhere from the Great
Lakes southeast into the Mid-Atlantic/Southern New England. Strong
diurnal heating each afternoon will support scattered thunderstorm
development capable of producing damaging outflows. Severe
probabilities were introduced for Day 7 with this outlook given
increasing confidence in thunderstorms developing within surface
troughing east of the Appalachians. The exact location of these
highlights will likely be refined with subsequent outlooks.

Additionally, the overall large-scale pattern seems conducive for
one or more shortwave troughs to move through the broader
northwesterly flow across this region. Given the (seasonably)
strongly unstable and sheared environment, one or more southeastward
moving MCSs may be possible during the Day 7 - Day 10 period.
Ensemble guidance varies significantly as to the timing and location
of these potential short-wave troughs, but the overall pattern would
suggest additional severe weather potential at the end of the
forecast period and in the days that follow.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An expansive mid-level ridge centered over the north-central US will
continue to retrograde during the early part of the forecast period,
before becoming centered over the Rockies toward the end of the
upcoming week. A seasonably strong mid-level trough will be
positioned over northern Quebec, positioning strong northwesterly
flow from the Upper Midwest southeast into the Mid-Atlantic and
areas to the northeast. A combination of deterministic and ensemble
forecast solutions, including AI emulators, show one or more
short-wave troughs or jet streaks moving through this enhanced flow
    field.

The position of these mid-level features will help drive a surface
front southward across the eastern US that will stretch from
somewhere in the central/north-central US into the Mid-Atlantic. To
the north of this boundary, a seasonably cool, dry airmass should be
found. Along and south of this surface boundary, a very warm, moist,
and unstable airmass will be found.

As the aforementioned short-wave troughs move through the enhanced
mid-level flow, one or more rounds of thunderstorms/mesoscale
convective systems are likely to develop and move east/southeast.
Ensemble guidance continues to show a very unstable airmass (MUCAPE
in excess of 2000-3000 J/kg) along and south of where the surface
boundary resides, with strong vertical shear. The overall pattern
would seem to suggest multiple rounds/days of severe potential, with
prior days' convection likely modulating the where and intensity of
    subsequent days' convection.

Given these sensitivities to prior days' convection, there will
likely be run-to-run variability within the deterministic guidance
suite as we approach the latter half of next week. Thus, while
confidence is high in severe potential during the Day 4-8 period
(and perhaps beyond), highlighting specific locations and days of
severe potential will prove challenging, with likely areas changing
    from model run-to-run.

    ... Friday/Day 6 -- Mid-Atlantic Region ...

This evening's deterministic guidance suite (20260712 00 UTC), along
with yesterday morning's deterministic guidance suite (20260711 12
UTC), is faster moving the surface boundary south than last night's
guidance suite (20260711 00 UTC). However, the overall ensemble
guidance continues to suggest severe potential across the region,
owing to differences in the position of the surface boundary and the
timing of mid-level vorticity maxima. Severe probabilities (15%)
have been retained with this forecast in a nod to the ensemble
guidance suite, but if the current trend of pushing the surface
boundary farther south on Thursday (Day 5) continues, severe weather probabilities may need to be removed as the surface boundary will
push south of the better deep-layer shear.

    ...DISCUSSION...
All ensemble guidance suites are in broad agreement that the central
US ridge will once again build westward in response to the
development of a eastern North America long-wave trough during the
forecast period. However, significant differences exist within and
between ensembles regarding the timing and exact nature of this
    transition.

At the start of the forecast period, a frontal boundary will be
pushing south and west in the wake of a strong short-wave trough
that moved across New England in the prior days. The trend over the
past 48 hours is for this front to push farther south and west,
bringing a continental dry airmass into New England and portions of
the Mid-Atlantic. For example, several days ago ensemble guidance
was in good agreement that the front would be draped across the
Mid-Atlantic on Friday. Many, but not all, of the recent runs now
push the front south into southern Virginia and northern North
Carolina. This results in significant uncertainty regarding the
potential severe weather environment on Friday (Day 5) across the
Mid-Atlantic. For example, the GEFS mean temperature for Washington
D.C. is 93F on Friday afternoon, while the EPS mean temperature is
102F. However, both ensembles have dewpoint temperatures in the
    50Fs.

Given the increasing uncertainty as to the location of the surface
boundary on Friday and the overall quality of the severe weather
environment, unconditional 15% severe probabilities for Friday are
removed with this forecast. It is possible that severe probabilities
may be reintroduced in later outlooks should it become apparent that
the surface boundary washes out earlier than expected and quality
low-level moisture is able to return sooner.

That said, the front should begin to dissipate by Saturday in
response to a mid-level trough digging southeast across the Great
Lakes. This will allow rich boundary-layer moisture to advect
northeastward into the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England. This
increase in boundary-layer moisture and strong diurnal heating will
allow for afternoon MUCAPE values between 1000-2000 J/kg, perhaps
locally higher on Saturday and into Sunday.

This unstable and vertically sheared environment will be ripe for thunderstorm/severe thunderstorm development ahead of any digging
mid-level trough. However, as alluded to previously, the timing,
magnitude, and number of these troughs is highly variable within the
ensemble guidance, leading to too little confidence to pinpoint
where and when unconditional severe probabilities should be added.
As confidence in the timing, track, and strength of these embedded
troughs becomes clear, severe probabilities will likely be needed
somewhere across the region stretching from the Upper Midwest
southeast into the Mid-Atlantic for one or more days.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Ensemble guidance remains in good agreement that the US mid-level
pattern will transition from a CONUS-wide ridge centered over the
north-central US to a western US ridge and eastern US trough.
However the details of how this transition evolves are still
    uncertain.

The general pattern through the forecast period will favor northwest
flow from the Upper Midwest southeast into the Mid-Atlantic and
areas north and east from there. Individual members of the ensemble
suite, including the control members, show several small
vorticity/speed maxima moving through the flow this weekend in quick succession, with significant variability in the strength of these
waves. Ensemble guidance does have support for a more substantial
shortwave trough moving through the area, but differ on when this
will occur. For example, both the control runs of the ECMWF and GFS
have a stronger wave moving across the Great Lakes, but the GFS does
so on Saturday and Sunday, whereas the ECMWF does so on Monday and
    Tuesday.

Thus, while the overall pattern will favor thunderstorm development,
perhaps in relatively quick succession, uncertainty is too high to
highlight any severe areas with confidence at current lead times.

    ...DISCUSSION...
The mid-level pattern will continue to transition toward a western
US ridge and eastern Canada trough during this forecast period. The
strongest mid-level flow across the US will be in the region between
the ridge and trough, namely the Upper Midwest into the Northeast
    and Mid-Atlantic.

Ensemble guidance suites continue to indicate several stronger
mid-level short-wave troughs moving through the longwave trough
across eastern North America. In particular, one such trough will
move across the Great Lakes and Northeast on Saturday into Sunday,
with a secondary wave moving across the same general area late
Monday into early Wednesday. In between these main waves,
smaller-scale vorticity/speed maxima are likely to traverse the
    region.

Prior cyclones moving across the region will have left behind a
surface boundary arcing from the Great Lakes into the Mid-Atlantic.
As each of the previously mentioned waves approaches this boundary,
the surface boundary will lift northward before being pushed farther
southward in the wake of the departing wave. By the end of the
forecast period, this boundary may push as far south as the
    Southeast US.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms will be possible with each
passing wave, with more isolated potential in between the main waves
in association with any of the small/subtle vorticity/speed maxima
moving through the flow. The best areas for thunderstorms look to be
south of the better mid-level flow, which would tend to favor any
severe potential being driven by the degree of low-level
warming/steepening of the low-level lapse rates. At this time it
appears that the timing of the midlevel waves may favor early day
convection, especially across the Lower Great Lakes into the
northern Mid-Atlantic area. This early day convection may temper
afternoon heating and the overall organization/areal extent of any
severe potential. Thus, confidence remains too low to introduce
unconditional 15% severe weather probabilities at this time, despite
the acknowledgment that some severe potential is likely during this
    time period.

    ...DISCUSSION...
The mid-level pattern across the US will continue to be
characterized by a West Coast trough, Intermountain West ridge, and
Great Lakes/East Coast trough through the extended period. The main
belt of westerlies will be found along the northern periphery of the Intermountain West ridge.

A couple of short-wave troughs will feature prominently during the
forecast period. The first of these will be moving off the East
Coast on Sunday (Day 4). The second will be the closed low located
across the Pacific Northwest on Sunday. This low will open into a
mid-level short-wave trough as it crests the Intermountain West
ridge, before diving southeast across the Great Lakes early next
    week.

Sunday's East Coast departing mid-level wave will leave behind a
surface boundary arced from Virginia west-northwest into the Upper
Midwest. To the south of this boundary, a warm, moist airmass will
support afternoon MUCAPE values in the 1500-2500 J/kg range, locally
higher. This boundary will slowly push southward into the Carolinas
    during the afternoon.

Modest height falls will overspread this boundary across the
Carolinas during the afternoon as a the region remains on the
southern fringes of the departing wave's basal region. Additionally,
a weak mid-/upper-level level low across Florida/the eastern Gulf
will lift northward as it rejoins the westerlies. The combination of
modest height falls, strong instability, and the presence of a
surface boundary will result in scattered thunderstorm development
capable of producing strong thunderstorm outflows and wind damage. A
15% area has been introduced across the Carolinas for Sunday/Day-4
    to account for this potential.

The next time/area of potential concern will be across portions of
the Upper Midwest/western Great Lakes on Monday/Day-5. Here, both
the physics-based GEFS and EC ensemble guidance and the GFS and
EC-based AI emulators are in good agreement that height falls will
overspread the region ahead of the next short-wave trough. However,
the GFS-based ensemble means are considerably weaker with the
strength of the trough, partially owing to differences in timing of
the main wave. The background environment will likely be favorable
for severe thunderstorms, with MUCAPE values in the 2000-3000 J/kg
range and strong vertical shear, the magnitude of which will be
largely influenced by the strength of the mid-level wave. That said, west/southwesterly flow in the 925-700 millibar layer should support
a strong EML given the antecedent hot and dry airmass upstream of
this flow. This leads to concerns regarding convective initiation
within the favorable severe background environment. These concerns
are supported by the ensemble guidance with varying degrees of QPF
shown within the ensemble members. Given this is still 5 days away,
will hold off on introducing unconditional severe probabilities with
    this forecast.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Days 4-6/Mon-Wed -- Great Lakes/Midwest to the
    Mid-Atlantic/Northeast...

A shortwave upper trough initially over the Canadian Prairies and
northern Plains will develop east/southeast across the Upper
Midwest/Great Lakes on Monday, then the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic
vicinity on Tuesday. Meanwhile, another upper shortwave trough will
develop across the Great Lakes to the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic on
Wednesday. These features will support enhancement of mid/upper
level flow as a surface low tracks across Ontario/Quebec and New
England during this time. A trailing cold front will likewise
progress east/southeast over this three day period, with a very
moist and unstable airmass present ahead of the front. This overall
pattern will likely bring multiple days of severe storm potential
from the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes to portions of the Ohio Valley,
Northeast and Mid-Atlantic vicinity Monday through Wednesday,
necessitating severe probabilities. While these areas may shift some
over the coming day as the timing of mesoscale features and
influence of prior days convection becomes more clear, these general
regions are most likely to see at least isolated to widely scattered
damaging wind potential as the upper trough and surface cold front
    sweep across the area.

    ...Days 7-8/Thu-Fri...

Surface high pressure building behind the aforementioned surface
cold front will become centered over the Midwest late in the
forecast period. Upper troughing will persist across the East while
an amplified upper ridge remains oriented from TX to MT. Overall,
severe potential appears low late in the forecast period.

    ...DISCUSSION...
...Day 4-5/Tue-Wed -- Ohio Valley to Mid-Atlantic Vicinity...

An upper trough will pivot across the region on Tuesday and
Wednesday, bringing enhanced southerly flow aloft as a surface cold
front sweeps east/southeast through Wednesday night. Ahead of the
surface front, rich boundary layer moisture will be in place, and at
least moderate destabilization should occur. Convection could be
ongoing Tuesday morning across parts of IL/IN/Lower MI/western OH.
The extent of this activity is unclear and will depend on the
evolution of any potential MCS in the Day 3 period. Nevertheless,
the downstream airmass across parts of the Ohio Valley will become
favorable for scattered severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and
evening, likely in the form of one or more line segments organizing
ahead of the advancing cold front. An additional area of severe
storms will be possible on Tuesday across the Mid-Atlantic within a
warm advection regime ahead of the approaching system over the Ohio
Valley. Some areas could see more than one round of severe
    thunderstorms on Tuesday/Tuesday night.

By Wednesday, the severe risk should spread east from the
Mid-Atlantic into the Carolinas as the upper trough and surface cold
front continue to shift east. It is uncertain how far north the
severe risk may extend and probabilities may eventually need to be
included across parts of the Northeast/New England. Where storms do
form, damaging winds will be possible until the cold front moves
    offshore Wednesday evening/night.

    ...Days 6-8/Thu-Sat...

Upper troughing will persist across the eastern U.S. through the end
of the forecast period, but deep-layer flow will weaken. High
pressure in the wake of the cold frontal passage will preclude
severe potential across the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic and
    Northeast Thursday through Saturday.

Across the Plains and western U.S., a strong upper anticyclone will
park over the southern Plains, with an amplified upper ridge
building into the northern Rockies. Some thunderstorm potential
could develop across parts of the Plains as low-level moisture
increases beneath the ridge. However, severe potential is uncertain
as any potential would be driven by mesoscale features not well
defined at this time frame, and as the upper ridge suppresses any
large-scale support for organized severe thunderstorms.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Wed - Mid-Atlantic/Carolinas...

An upper trough will lift northeast across the region on Wednesday.
At the surface, a cold front will be oriented from roughly the
Hudson Valley to the central Appalachians at the beginning of the
period. Within a zone of strong warm advection ahead of the surface
front, widespread showers and thunderstorm may be ongoing across
parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, resulting in uncertainty
regarding northward extent of severe potential. For now, the 15
percent severe probability has been confined to portions of the
southern Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas ahead of the surface trough/cold
front. A very moist airmass will be in place across the region, and
25-35 kt effective shear magnitudes are forecast. Thunderstorm
clusters or linear bands are expected to move across the region
through evening, posing mainly a risk for damaging winds.

    ...Days 5-8/Thu-Sun...

Severe potential is expected to be lower late in the week into the
weekend. An upper trough will persist over the eastern U.S., but
deep-layer flow will be weak. Further west, the subtropical high
will intensify over the Plains and into the Four Corners vicinity
while the associated amplified upper ridge persists northward into
the Canadian Prairies. As boundary layer moisture spreads northward
beneath the upper ridge, some severe potential could develop each
day across parts of the High Plains. However, this will largely be
driven by mesoscale processes not well resolved at longer lead
times. Overall, the intense upper ridge should largely suppress
    greater severe potential.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Upper troughing will persist across the eastern U.S. through early
next week. Meanwhile, a strong, amplified upper ridge will envelop
the western half of the CONUS. This should largely limit greater
severe potential beneath the upper ridge, though some daily
mesoscale-driven strong thunderstorm risk could develop over parts
of the Plains as moist southerly low-level flow maintains moisture
across the central portions of the country. While any stronger flow
aloft will mostly remain north of the international border, some
model guidance trends over the last 24 hours indicate strengthening northwesterly flow aloft is possible as a shortwave impulse or two
migrates atop the upper ridge and over parts of the northern Plains
and Great Lakes. This could support an increasing severe risk across
these areas over the weekend, though confidence is too low for any
15 percent probability areas at this time.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Great Lakes/Midwest...

An amplified upper ridge will persist across the Plains and Rockies
through early next week. Periods of strengthening northwesterly
mid/upper flow are expected on the eastern periphery of the upper
ridge as a series of upper shortwave troughs move across the
Canadian Prairies and glance the Great Lakes vicinity, mainly Day
5-7/Sat-Mon. This could support areas of severe thunderstorm
potential across parts of the Upper Midwest to the Ohio Valley
vicinity during this time as stronger northwesterly flow overspreads
a seasonally moist and unstable airmass. However, both traditional physics-based NWP and ML/AI NWP are inconsistent and/or show
relatively low/broad probability areas -- increasing uncertainty in
timing and spatial delineation of severe potential. Given the
proximity to the upper ridge, capping may be a concern. Trends will
be monitored and severe probabilities may become necessary is
    confidence increases in subsequent outlooks.

...Upper Midwest to Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic...

An upper ridge centered over the High Plains will persist through
the middle of next week. Meanwhile, upper troughing will be
maintained over the eastern U.S. Periods of enhanced northwesterly
flow aloft are expected across parts of the Upper Midwest/Great
Lakes into parts of the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic on the eastern
periphery of the Plains upper ridge. Several shortwave impulses are
forecast to develop southeast from Canada within this northwest flow
regime. This could support daily severe thunderstorm chances from
the Upper Midwest into the Ohio Valley, and possibly the
Mid-Atlantic. However, the timing of these features is uncertain,
and midlevel capping could limit the spatial extent of severe
potential. It is likely that portions of the Upper Midwest into the
Ohio Valley will need severe probabilities in later outlooks,
particularly for Day 4-6/Sat-Mon, and possibly the mid-Atlantic by
Day 7/Tue. However, confidence in where this risk will develop each
day is too low for 15 percent delineation at this time.

    ...DISCUSSION...
...Days 4-5/Sun-Mon -- Upper Midwest toward the Ohio Valley...

Enhanced northwesterly flow aloft will overspread the Upper Midwest
to the Ohio Valley on Sunday and Monday as several shortwave
impulses migrate through the area on the eastern periphery of a
strong upper ridge over the Plains. A seasonally very moist airmass
will reside across much of these areas, supporting strong
destabilization each day. On Sunday, a corridor of severe
thunderstorm potential appears possible across parts of MN/WI toward
northern IA/IL as a weak shortwave impulse initially over the
Dakotas spreads east. While details regarding storm coverage remain
uncertain, sufficient deep layer shear and strong instability will
be in place, and at least isolated storm clusters could pose a risk
    for damaging winds.

By Monday, an upper shortwave trough will emanating from an upper
low near Hudson Bay will dig southward across the Great Lakes. This
will result in increasing northwesterly flow aloft. Meanwhile, a
surface low may move eastward across the Great Lakes near the
international border while a stronger nocturnal low-level jet
develops over parts of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. This
stronger flow will overspread a moist and unstable airmass, and
potential for thunderstorm clusters developing into an MCS appears
    possible.

While details remain uncertain regarding convective evolution and
coverage on Sunday and Monday, through broader synoptic pattern
appears favorable for at least isolated severe thunderstorms. The 15
percent severe areas may shift some in the coming days as details
    become more clear.

    ...Days 6-8/Tue-Thu...

It is possible some severe potential could shift east/southeast on
Tuesday toward the central Appalachians and the Mid-Atlantic.
Deep-layer northwesterly flow will not be as strong as prior days,
but could still be sufficient for some organized severe risk.
Confidence in where greater risk corridors may develop is low, and
will largely be influenced by convective evolution in the Days 4-5/Sunday-Monday periods.

A strong upper ridge will shift west across the western U.S. late in
the period, bringing a broad area of generally weak deep-layer
northwesterly flow to the eastern half of the CONUS. Some
thunderstorm potential is likely within this typical summertime
pattern across the Plain into the East, but severe potential is
    uncertain.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Monday...
A prominent upper high will remain centered over the central and
southern Plains with a belt of enhanced mid-level flow forecast
along the periphery of that feature from the northern Plains into
the Great Lakes. Within that flow regime, a short-wave trough is
forecast to translate through the Great Lakes in tandem with a
surface low and trailing cold front. A hot and moist boundary layer
is expected ahead of the front, yielding moderate to strong
instability by afternoon. Despite veered low-level winds,
strengthening mid/upper-level winds in the exit region of a jet
streak will contribute to sufficient vertical shear for organized
severe storms across portions of the Great Lakes into the OH Valley
    Monday afternoon into night.

    ...Day 5/Tuesday...
The Day 4/Monday short-wave trough is forecast to evolve into an
upper low across southwest ON and the lower Great Lakes with an
associated belt of stronger cyclonic flow developing from the OH
Valley into the southern Mid-Atlantic and NC. At the surface, an
area of low pressure will develop from the lower Great Lakes into
central NY with a trailing cold front advancing through the upper OH
    Valley, central Appalachians, and Mid-Atlantic.

Thunderstorms may be ongoing Tuesday morning along and ahead of the
front from the lower Great Lakes and upper OH Valley into the
Mid-Atlantic. Stronger heating is anticipated to the south of the
early-day storms from the southern Mid-Atlantic into NC, where
moderate to potentially strong instability is forecast. The
strongest instability will coincide with modestly strong deep-layer
shear to support some severe weather threat in those areas Tuesday
    afternoon and evening.

    ...Days 6-8/Wednesday-Friday...
The 00Z ensemble means depict a slight westward regression of the
dominant mid/upper-level high with persistent troughing along the
East Coast. On the periphery of the high, a notable short-wave
trough is forecast to progress from the Canadian Rockies on
Wednesday through the Prairie Provinces on Thursday with modest
height falls along the international border. By Friday, there is
some model signal for another short-wave trough to move into the
upper MS Valley and Great Lakes regions. At the surface, a more
substantial cold front is projected to move into the northern Plains
on Thursday, and the upper Midwest and Great Lakes by Friday.

A few severe storms appear possible in the Southeast and northern
Plains on Wednesday, the northern Plains on Thursday, and the upper
Midwest into the Great Lakes on Friday. Confidence in the magnitude
and areal extent of the threat is currently too low to delineate
    additional areas.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Tuesday...
An upper low is forecast to develop from southwest ON into the
northern Mid-Atlantic with an attending belt of 35-45 kt mid-level
flow extending from the OH Valley into the southern Mid-Atlantic.
At the surface, a cyclone will remain vertically aligned with the
upper low, while a trailing cold front advances through the upper OH
and TN Valleys into the Mid-Atlantic, Carolinas, and Gulf Coast
states. A lee trough is expected to develop ahead of the cold front
    along the Piedmont Tuesday afternoon.

Showers and thunderstorms (some potentially strong) are expected to
be ongoing Tuesday morning from the upper OH Valley into the
Mid-Atlantic, aided by forcing for ascent ahead of the upper low and
low-level warm air and moisture advection along a 30-40 kt low-level
jet. That activity is expected to linger into the afternoon from NY
and PA into western New England, which will limit the potential for
air mass destabilization in those areas. Stronger daytime heating
appears possible south of the Mason-Dixon Line, where moderate
instability is forecast across the pre-frontal warm sector.

Thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity
during the afternoon along the cold front and lee trough from the
Delmarva into central Appalachians and VA/NC Piedmont. The moderate
instability combined with 35-40 kt of deep-layer shear will support
organized storm modes with the primary hazard being damaging wind
    gusts.

Other more isolated severe storms appear possible over the central
High Plains within a low-level upslope regime.

    ...Day 5/Wednesday...
The Day 4/Tuesday upper low is forecast to slowly drift northeast
with a belt of stronger mid-level winds overspreading New England. A
surface low will remain vertically aligned with the mid-level system
with convergence in the vicinity of that feature and a trailing
front serving as the focus for afternoon thunderstorm development.
The models suggest that southern to central parts of New England may
become moderately unstable, which, combined with the slight shear
enhancement, may support a few strong to severe storms.

Additional strong to severe storms appear possible along a frontal
zone in the Southeast, where a very moist air mass will contribute
    to moderate to strong instability.

Uncertainty in the extent of the severe weather threat in both areas
precludes the delineation of a 15% probability contour.

    ...Days 6-8/Thursday through Saturday...

The 00Z ensemble means are in reasonably good agreement in depicting
the retrogression of the upper high from the Southern Rockies into
the lower CO Valley. A concurrent weakening and broadening of the
eastern CONUS trough is also forecast. There is a model signal for a
stronger mid-level system to move into BC and the Pacific Northwest
by Day 8/Saturday. Deterministic guidance indicates a series of weak disturbances tracking from the northern Plains to along and east of
the MS Valley during this time period with sporadic occurrences of
severe weather possible. However, the large-scale pattern currently
appears unsupportive of an organized severe weather episode.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Wednesday...

The large-scale pattern will feature an upper high over the southern
High Plains with ridging extending into the northern Plains and
upper MS Valley. Meanwhile, broader-scale troughing will persist
across the eastern CONUS, anchored by an upper low over the
    Mid-Atlantic.

A very moist air mass is expected to contribute to moderate to
strong instability by afternoon along a cold front over the
Southeast. While vertical shear will remain rather weak, the strong
buoyancy will be supportive of locally intense downdrafts capable of
damaging winds. Elsewhere, a few strong to severe storms appear
possible within a moist upslope regime over the central High Plains,
as well as along a cold front moving into the northern High Plains.

...Days 5 and 6/Thursday and Friday...

The southwestern U.S. ridge/eastern U.S. trough configuration will
be maintained this period. Between those features, a notable
short-wave trough is forecast to track from the northern Plains into
the mid MS Valley along with a surface frontal system. Persistent
low-level ridging from the Great Lakes into the Gulf Coast states
will limit the breadth of an unstable warm sector to the northern
and central Plains on Thursday, where thunderstorms are expected.
Vertical shear is not forecast to be particularly strong; however,
some potential exists for an organized severe weather episode.
Additional strong to severe storms appear possible along the front
in the Ozarks on Friday. Both days will continue to be monitored for
the possible inclusion of severe weather probabilities in subsequent
    forecasts.

...Days 7 and 8/Saturday and Sunday...

There is good agreement across the ensemble means in the progression
of a more significant short-wave trough from western into central
Canada with the southern fringe of more substantial height falls
overspreading the northern Rockies into the northern High Plains on
Sunday. That upper-air system will be attended by a cold front that
could be the source of severe storm development in those areas
    Sunday afternoon into night.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Thursday...

A short-wave trough is forecast to move through the northern Plains
and upper MS Valley, within the northeast periphery of an upper high
centered over the southern Rockies. At the surface, a weak cold
front is expected to follow the track of the upper-air system with
moderate to strong instability expected by afternoon ahead of the
boundary. Various deterministic and ensemble guidance indicates
thunderstorms developing over the northern Plains into the upper MS
Valley with subsequent movement into the mid MO Valley and perhaps
upper Midwest Thursday night. Forecast vertical shear is on the
margins of that which supports organized storm modes and an
associated greater severe weather threat. Nonetheless, isolated
severe weather appears likely, requiring at least low probabilities
in the Day 3 time frame.

    ...Day 5/Friday...

The Day 4 short-wave trough is expected to continue southeast
through the Midwest with an associated surface low developing into
the mid MS Valley. A trailing cool front will extend through the
Ozark Plateau into the Southern Plains. Persistent low-level ridging
from the lower Great Lakes into the TN Valley will limit the
eastward extent of more robust air mass destabilization ahead of the
surface low and along the track of the short-wave trough. It does
appear that a corridor of stronger instability and modest vertical
shear will develop from the mid MS Valley into the Ozark Plateau,
where a few severe storms appear possible.

    ...Day 6-8/Saturday through Monday...

The 00Z ensemble means remain in good agreement in depicting a
stronger short-wave trough and attending belt of mid-level flow
progressing along the international border from the Pacific
northwest to the northern Plains. Some severe weather threat could
materialize along an associated cold front over the northern Plains
on Sunday and the northern Plains into the upper MS Valley on
    Monday.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Friday...

The 00Z models have trended toward a more intense short-wave trough
over the Midwest, which in turn leads to a deeper surface low
tracking toward the mid MS Valley. However, the progression of those
features will be toward an area of more persistent surface ridging
with only an axis of modest instability forecast ahead of the
surface low. Stronger instability is expected to reside farther
southwest from the lower MO Valley into the Ozark Plateau, ahead of
a southeastward-moving cold front. A few severe storms appear
possible from the vicinity of the surface low southwest along the
cold front. But, given the northward displacement of the stronger
forcing for ascent and vertical shear from the stronger instability,
the degree of organized severe weather potential remains uncertain.

Elsewhere, an isolated severe weather threat could materialize over
the northern and central High Plains within a moist, low-level
    upslope regime.

    ...Day 5/Saturday...

The Day 4 short-wave trough is forecast to develop through the mid
MS into lower OH Valley along with the surface low. Meanwhile, the
trailing cold front will advance southeast into the lower MS Valley,
where moderate to strong instability is forecast by afternoon. A few
severe storms appear possible along and ahead of the front; however,
generally weak vertical shear is expected to limit the potential for
    a more organized event.

    ...Day 6-8/Sunday through Tuesday...

Both the ensemble means and deterministic models remain in
relatively good agreement in depicting a stronger short-wave trough
and attending belt of mid-level flow progressing along the
international border from the northern Rockies to the northern
Plains in the Sunday-Monday time frame. Some severe weather threat
could materialize along an associated cold front over ND on Sunday
and the northern Plains into the upper MS Valley on Monday as
strengthening vertical shear overspreads an unstable warm sector. By
Tuesday, the front is expected to stall over the central High Plains
with some severe weather threat possible within the post-frontal
    upslope regime.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Saturday...

A short-wave trough will progress from the mid MS into lower OH
Valleys with modest height falls forecast across the Gulf Coast
states. At the surface, an area of low pressure will follow the same
track as the upper-air system, while a trailing cold front advances
through the lower MS and TN Valleys. While weaker than on Friday, a
modest enhancement of 850-mb winds is forecast during the afternoon
ahead of the surface low over the OH and TN Valleys.

Morning storms appear possible from the lower OH into lower MS
Valleys within a zone of warm advection associated with a nocturnal
low-level jet. The longevity and extent of early-day storms remain
uncertain, but where stronger heating can occur, the presence of
boundary-layer dewpoints in the 70s will contribute to pockets of
moderate instability. Additional storms are anticipated during the
afternoon, focused along the cold front and any residual outflow
boundaries from previous storms. Deep-layer shear is expected to
remain generally less than 30 kt, which will tend to limit the
potential for organized storm modes. A possible exception is across
parts of KY and TN where slightly stronger low-level shear could
contribute to updraft rotation and some tornado risk. Otherwise,
locally damaging wind gusts appear to be the primary hazard.

Isolated severe storms capable of mainly damaging winds and hail
appear possible over the southern High Plains Saturday afternoon and
evening within a moist and unstable upslope regime.

...Days 5 and 6/Sunday and Monday...

The models remain in relatively good agreement in depicting a strong
short-wave trough and attending belt of mid-level flow progressing
along the international border from the northern Rockies into the
northern Plains. Low-level ridging from the Great Lakes into
southern Plains may disrupt the return of robust boundary-layer
moisture ahead of a cold front moving through the northern Plains
into the upper MS Valley. Nonetheless, the presence of steep lapse
rates and strengthening vertical shear along the frontal zone will
support some severe weather risk over the northern Plains on Sunday
and the northern Plains into the upper MS Valley on Monday.

An isolated severe storm threat may also develop along the East
Coast on Sunday, ahead of a positively tilted trough moving through
the Great Lakes and OH and TN Valley.

...Days 7 and 8/Tuesday and Wednesday...

The 00Z ensemble means indicate a belt of modestly enhanced
mid-level flow from the northern Rockies into the Great Lakes,
between a trough over Hudson Bay and a flattened ridge across the
Southwest. Some severe weather threat may materialize over the
central High Plains along and to the north of a stalled front, and
perhaps in AZ if stronger easterly flow can develop on the south
    side of the upper high.

    ...DISCUSSION...
...Days 4 and 5/Sunday and Monday...

The models remain in relatively good agreement in depicting a strong
short-wave trough and attending belt of mid-level flow progressing
along the international border from the northern Rockies into the
northern Plains. Meanwhile, an associated cold front is forecast to
move into the northern High Plains on Sunday and the upper MS Valley
into northern Plains on Monday. Low-level ridging from the Great
Lakes into Ozark Plateau may disrupt the advection of a maritime
tropical air mass ahead of the front. However, evapotranspiration
will contribute to pockets of higher moisture content, which,
combined with the eastern extension of an EML plume, will contribute
to moderate instability ahead of a surface cold front both
    afternoons.

On Sunday, the strongest forcing for ascent associated with a lead
vorticity lobe is expected to remain across SK and MB with capping
to the south of that feature potentially limiting storm coverage
along the front in ND. On the condition that storms develop, the
presence of moderate instability and 30-40 kt of deep-layer shear
would support storm organization and at least an isolated severe
weather threat. Additional severe storms appear possible from the
Mid-Atlantic into Southeast ahead of a short-wave trough moving
through the Great Lakes, OH Valley, and Gulf Coast states.

On Monday, a secondary disturbance and associated jet streak are
forecast to move into the northern Plains, supporting a potentially
greater severe weather threat from the northern Plains into the
    upper MS Valley.

...Days 6 through 8/Tuesday through Thursday...

The 00Z deterministic and ensemble mean solutions indicate
low-amplitude troughing across the north-central states on Tuesday
with a belt of enhanced mid-level flow extending from the northern
Rockies into the upper Great Lakes. A few severe storms appear
possible over the central High Plains where the southern periphery
of the stronger mid-level flow is juxtaposed with a moist and
    unstable upslope regime.

By Wednesday and Thursday, the ensemble mean solutions indicate a
modestly enhanced belt of quasi-zonal flow across the northern tier
of the CONUS. However, there is considerable spread across the
deterministic models with the location and track of disturbances
embedded within that air stream. As such, confidence in the location
and extent of any severe weather threat is low.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Monday...

A short-wave trough and associated mid-level jet streak are forecast
to move through the northern Plains into the upper MS Valley in
tandem with a surface cold front. The combination of steep lapse
rates and a moist boundary layer is expected to yield moderate to
strong instability by afternoon ahead of the front, amidst a
kinematic environment featuring 40-50+ kt of deep-layer. As such,
the potential will exist for organized storm modes capable of a more concentrated severe weather event from eastern ND into northwest MN.
More isolated severe storms appear possible southwest along the
    front into NE.

Elsewhere, a mid-level trough is forecast to intensify over western
QC into the St. Lawrence Valley with an attending belt of
strengthening mid-level flow overspreading northern New England. At
the surface, a front is expected to settle south through northern
New England and the northern Mid-Atlantic. Where stronger
destabilization can occur, isolated severe storms appear possible
along the front, aided by 30-40 kt of deep-layer shear.

...Days 5 and 6/Tuesday and Wednesday...

A broader-scale trough over central Canada into the north-central
states on Tuesday is forecast to amplify slightly while moving into
the upper Great Lakes by Wednesday. Meanwhile, a downstream trough
across the upper OH Valley is expected to weaken while accelerating
into the Northeast. At the surface, a cold front will move through
the Great Lakes with the trailing extension of the boundary stalling
over the central High Plains. The degree of instability ahead of the
front remains uncertain; however, sufficient vertical shear is
expected along the front to support a conditional threat for at
    least isolated severe storms.

...Days 7 and 8/Thursday and Friday...

The 00Z ensemble means indicate a flattened upper ridge over the
southwest and south-central U.S. with a belt of modestly enhanced
mid-level flow across the northern tier of states. However, there is considerable model spread in the location and movement of
disturbances embedded within that pattern that may focus a severe
weather threat. That being said, there is a fairly consistent signal
across AI guidance for some severe weather threat across parts of
the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday/Day 7. Model trends will continue to be
    monitored for that time period.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Tuesday...

A broader-scale trough is forecast over central Canada into the
north-central U.S. with a series of subtle disturbances moving
through the base of that feature. At the surface, a front is
expected to move through the upper Great Lakes with the western
extension of the boundary settling slowly south through the central
High Plains. A severe weather threat may materialize from the mid MO
Valley into the central High Plains along the front and in the
post-frontal upslope, where an overlap of moderate instability and
stronger vertical shear is expected to reside.

Elsewhere, a more widespread area of moderate instability developing
across southern AZ could support a locally greater risk of severe
    storms.

The extent of the severe weather threat in both areas is currently
too uncertain to delineate an area.

    ...Day 5/Wednesday...

The broad, cyclonic flow regime will continue over the north-central
CONUS with a belt of slightly enhanced mid-level winds extending
from the northern Rockies through the northern and central Plains
into the Great Lakes. At the surface, the previously mentioned front
will continue through the Great Lakes with the boundary extending
southwest through the mid MS Valley into the central or southern
High Plains. Similar to Day 4/Tuesday, some severe weather appears
possible along the boundary over the lower MO into mid MS Valleys,
as well as within the post-frontal upslope across the central High
    Plains.

The subtle nature of the forcing for ascent leads to uncertainty in
severe storm coverage, so no area will be included.

    ...Days 6-8/Thursday through Saturday...

The 00Z ensemble means are in reasonably good agreement in depicting
the continuation of an upper high over the southwestern U.S. with lower-amplitude troughing over the Great Lakes into the Northeast.
At the surface, there is considerable model spread in the location
of relevant boundaries that might focus severe storms. That being
said, much of the available AI guidance suggests an increasing
severe weather threat in the Mid-Atlantic during this time frame.

Model trends will continue to be monitored for the possible
inclusion of an area in subsequent outlooks.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Wednesday...

Broad troughing will exist from Hudson Bay into the north-central
U.S. with a belt of enhanced, cyclonic flow from the northern
Rockies through northern and central Plains into the upper Great
Lakes. At the surface, a front will advance through the upper Great
Lakes with the western extension of the boundary settling more
slowly south through the central into southern High Plains.
Thunderstorms may be ongoing at 12Z across portions of the mid MO
Valley with lingering clouds and convective outflow potentially
modulating the location of the effective surface front and the
degree of instability ahead of it. The models suggest an area from
eastern KS into MO as being the most probable location for at least
isolated severe storms during the afternoon and evening hours. The
extent of the threat will likely be dependent on mesoscale details
yet to be known. As such, no area will be delineated in this
    forecast.

Other areas of isolated severe storm potential will be in the
central High Plains and southeast AZ.

...Days 5 and 6/ Thursday and Friday...

A slight eastward shift of the mean trough position is forecast on
Thursday with some model signal for an embedded short-wave trough to
move through the Great Lakes. At the surface, there is some
suggestion that a weak front or wind shift will move into the
northern Mid-Atlantic during the afternoon with the trailing
extension of that boundary stretching through the mid MS Valley into
the southern High Plains. Ahead of that boundary, widespread 70+ F
dewpoints are expected from New England into the Mid-Atlantic and
Carolinas, leading to moderate to potentially strong instability.
The greatest potential for a few severe storms appears to be across
the Mid-Atlantic Thursday afternoon where the moderate instability
will coincide with a belt of 30-40 kt mid-level flow.

Some severe weather threat may also develop in the Ozark Plateau and
    AZ Thursday afternoon and evening.

On Friday, the above-mentioned Great Lakes short-wave trough is
expected to shear northeast across southern ON with 30-40 kt of
mid-level flow prevailing over the Northeast. The surface pattern is
somewhat disorganized with some semblance of a trough from southern
New England through the Mid-Atlantic coastal region. Moderate to
strong instability may again develop ahead of that feature,
supporting the potential for some severe weather threat during the
afternoon and early evening hours. However, the strongest vertical
shear is forecast to remain to the north of the stronger
instability, leading to uncertainty in the magnitude of the severe
    threat.

...Days 7 and 8/Saturday and Sunday...

The various 00Z ensemble mean solutions indicate a slight eastward
shift of an upper low near Hudson Bay with low-amplitude troughing
and strengthening mid-level flow moving into the Northeast.
Southerly low-level winds within the western periphery of a surface
high positioned off the Atlantic Coast will maintain a moist and
unstable air mass beneath the strengthening winds aloft. As such,
some severe weather threat is expected to persist from the
Mid-Atlantic into New England this period.

Elsewhere, there is some model signal for a surface front to move
into the Midwest, where some severe weather potential may exist.

    0329 AM CDT Mon Aug 03 2026

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Thursday...

Broad troughing is forecast from the northern Plains through the
Great Lakes with a series of disturbances moving through that
airflow pattern. Elsewhere, an elongated vorticity ribbon will
progress from the central and southern Appalachians into the
Northeast. At the surface, a front initially from the southern Great
Lakes into the southern Plains is forecast to weaken. Over the
eastern CONUS, southerly winds will maintain a broad corridor of 70+
F dewpoints along and east of the Appalachians, which will
contribute to moderate instability by afternoon. Aided by the
approach of the disturbance aloft, thunderstorms are expected to
increase in coverage through the afternoon with some severe weather
possible. Generally weak vertical shear and the absence of a
coherent front in the region lead to uncertainty in where the
    greatest threat may materialize.

An isolated severe threat may also develop along the front from the
Ozark Plateau into the southern High Plains, and in AZ during the
    afternoon and evening.

    ...Day 5/Friday...

An intense mid/upper-level low is expected to evolve over central
Canada with upper highs situated over the Great Basin and off the
Mid-Atlantic Coast. Between those features, corridors of stronger
mid-level flow are forecast from the northern Rockies into the
northern Plains, and to a lesser extent over the Northeast.
Some severe weather threat may again materialize from the
Mid-Atlantic into southern New England in the vicinity of a surface
trough. However, the strongest vertical shear is forecast to be
displaced to the north of the stronger instability, leading to
uncertainty in the extent of the severe weather threat. Isolated
severe storms also appear possible along a front moving into the
    upper MS Valley.

    ...Days 6-8/Saturday through Monday...

The various 00Z ensemble means indicate an upper low initially over
Hudson Bay shifting east into northern QC with persistent ridging
over the southern CONUS. Between those features, a belt of enhanced
mid-level flow is forecast across the northern tier of states with
some signal for continued troughing through Sunday over the Great
Lakes into the OH Valley. At the surface, there is ensemble member
clustering in surface low positions over the northern Plains along a
front extending into the upper Great Lakes. There is a model signal
for the front to continue into the Great Lakes and Midwest, where
some severe weather threat appears possible. A separate severe
weather risk may also persist from the Mid-Atlantic into New
    England.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper high will remain over the southwestern states through much
of the period, with a deep upper low gradually shifting eastward
across Ontario Canada. In between, a zone of moderate northwest flow
aloft will exist from the northern Plains/Upper MS Valley across the
Great Lakes. At the surface, low pressure will exist over the
central High Plains, with an east-west boundary roughly along I-80
    from Nebraska eastward.

Stronger cyclonic flow aloft will move out of the northern Plains on
Fri/D4 and increase across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast
from Sat/D5 through the end of the period, with midlevel winds
around 30-40 kt possibly overspreading the surface front. A large
area of upper 60s to lower 70s F dewpoints will remain along and
south of the boundary, which may shift north/south as disturbances
rotate around the Canadian upper low. Predictability remains low for
denoting precise MCS corridors, but timing of the upper wave
amplifications will be monitored in subsequent forecast cycles, with
possible risk areas mainly for damaging wind potential.

NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    0400 AM CDT Wed Aug 05 2026

    Valid 081200Z - 131200Z

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Saturday/D4...
Southwest midlevel winds of only 25 kt will exist across the
Northeast, while low-level moisture remains in place supporting up
to 2000 J/kg MUCAPE with poor lapse rates aloft. This will support
daytime thunderstorms over a large area from the Appalachians into
the Northeast, and a few severe gusts cannot be ruled out.
Otherwise, normal gusty outflow winds are to be expected.

To the west, an area of stronger instability is forecast across the
Mid MO Valley, where northwesterly midlevel winds of 35 kt will
exist along the southern periphery of a trough sweeping across the
Upper Great Lakes. Evening/overnight storms may occur across parts
of eastern NE, IA, and MO, and instability may be large enough to
warrant at least low severe probabilities as the event nears in
    time.

    ...Sunday/D5...
Drying will occur aloft over parts of the Northeast as a wave moves
into Quebec, but substantial low-level moisture will still support
scattered thunderstorms ahead of a cold front across the Mid
Atlantic. Shear will again be weak, but perhaps enough mean wind
speeds will exist for storms to be mobile/produce areas of strong
    gusts.

To the west, low-level moisture is forecast to shift a bit farther
north into the Dakotas, and this will occur beneath stronger
northwest flow aloft. This area bears watching in later outlooks, as
wind profiles may somewhat favor supercells. Predictability is
    currently low.

    ...Mon/D6 to Wed/D8...
While predictability decreases further during this time frame,
moderate west to northwest flow aloft will remain from the upper MS
Valley across the Great Lakes, which will spread into the Northeast
D7/D8. If a wave does amplify within this flow regime, a corridor of
damaging winds could develop given upper 60s to low 70s F dewpoints
along/south of the mean frontal zone (roughly IA to NY/PA by end of
the period). Model variation is currently too great to depict an
    precise corridor.

    ...DISCUSSION...
For the Sunday/D4 through Thursday/D8 period, an elongated zone of thunderstorm/wind potential will exist from the northern Plains
across parts of the Midwest/Great Lakes, and possibly extending into
parts of the Northeast. Predictability is low for this pattern given
the likelihood of ongoing corridors of storms early each day, and
variability with the position of the elongated west to east front.
However, the presence of a very moist air mass, with possibly strong instability to the south, combined with possible waves rotating
around the large-scale upper trough over Canada, may yield storm
corridors with damaging wind potential. One or more areas may be
denoted in later outlooks as the events near in time.

At this time, rough areas of interest include the northern Plains to
Upper Midwest on Sunday/D4, and portions of the Great Lakes/Midwest
    on Monday/D5.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Monday/Day 4 to Wednesday/Day 6...
A broad cyclonic flow pattern is forecast to remain in place from
the north-central U.S. to the Northeast during the early to
mid-week. On the southern edge of the stronger flow, it appears that
an east-to-west corridor of moisture and instability will remain in
place from the central Plains eastward into the Midwest. On Monday,
isolated to scattered thunderstorm development will be possible
during the afternoon and evening along and near the northern edge of
the stronger instability, from eastern Nebraska eastward into the
southern Great Lakes. The greatest convective coverage is expected
to be from northern Illinois eastward into western Pennsylvania,
where low-level flow is forecast to be maximized. Moderate
deep-layer shear along this zone is forecast to be favorable for a
severe threat Monday afternoon and evening. Supercells and multicell
line segments will have potential to produce severe wind gusts.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, model forecasts suggest that a front will
move southward into northern sections of the Ohio Valley, while the
instability axis remains in a similar position further west near the
Omaha area. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will again be
possible in the afternoon and evening, near and to the north of the
instability axis. An isolated severe threat could develop with
storms that form within or near the strongest instability. However, predictability is low concerning where the greatest potential for
    severe storms will be.

    ...Thursday/Day 7 and Friday/Day 8...
On Thursday and Friday, west to northwesterly mid-level flow is
forecast over much of the eastern half of the nation. A moist and
unstable airmass should be in place from the central and northern
Plains southeastward into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. Although
large-scale ascent may be relatively weak over much of this area,
isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be possible across parts of
this airmass during the afternoon and evening. Due to the extended
time range, predictability remains low concerning the finer-scale
details of any scenario from Thursday into Friday.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Tuesday/Day 4 and Wednesday/Day 5...
A broad cyclonic mid-level flow pattern is forecast from the upper
Mississippi Valley into the Northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday. At
the surface, a moist airmass is forecast to be in place over most of
the eastern half of the nation with a quasi-stationary front located
from the northern Plains east-southeastward into the southern Great
Lakes. To the south of the front, surface dewpoints in the 70s F
will likely result in the development of moderate to strong
instability. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms appear likely to
develop each afternoon in areas where low-level convergence becomes
maximized. Outflow boundaries will be important in determining where
the greatest convective coverage ends up being. In addition to the
instability, moderate deep-layer shear is forecast over much of this
moist airmass suggesting that an isolated wind-damage threat will be
possible. However, the lack of any appreciable mid-level shortwave
    trough introduces considerable uncertainty.

    ...Thursday/Day 6 and Saturday/Day 8...
From Thursday to Saturday, mid-level flow is forecast to become
westerly over much of the northern U.S, with a front located from
the central Plains eastward into the southern Great Lakes and Ohio
Valley. Thunderstorm development will be possible each afternoon and
evening near this front. Surface dewpoints in the 70s F to the south
of the front, along with moderate to strong instability will make
isolated severe thunderstorms possible each afternoon and evening.
However, spatial uncertainty concerning any potential severe threat
    is considerable at this range.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Wednesday/Day 4 to Friday/Day 6...
From Wednesday to Friday, a broad mid-level cyclonic flow pattern is
forecast to remain in place across the Great Lakes and the
Northeast, as a ridge moves eastward from the northern Rockies into
the upper Mississippi Valley. At the surface, a cold front is
forecast to become quasi-stationary from the central and northern
Plains into the mid Missouri and Ohio Valleys. Low-level convergence
near this front will be a focus for convective development each day.

On Wednesday, model forecasts suggest that scattered thunderstorms
will most likely develop Wednesday afternoon along an axis of
moderate instability from western Nebraska into southwestern South
Dakota. The storms will be supported by a mid-level shortwave trough
moving across the north-central U.S. Moderate deep-layer shear near
the instability axis should support a severe threat during the
afternoon and evening. The models also suggest that a convective
cluster will form within a very moist and unstable airmass in the
central Appalachians Wednesday afternoon, where a wind-damage threat
    will be possible.

On Thursday, the most favored corridor for convective development is
forecast from eastern Nebraska into central Illinois. However, the
models suggest that scattered convective coverage could be
concentrated overnight as low-level flow increases across the
region. A severe threat could develop during the day but would
remain relatively isolated due to a lack of storm coverage. An
isolated severe threat could also develop across parts of the
central and northern High Plains during the afternoon. However,
storms there will also likely be isolated due to a shortwave ridge
    aloft.

On Friday, thunderstorm swill also be possible from the central
Plains eastward into the Ohio Valley during the afternoon and
evening. However, the most favored locations are likely to be
determined by outflow boundaries associated with the previous day's
convection. For this reason, uncertainty is substantial on Friday.

    ...Saturday/Day 7 and Sunday/Day 8...
Over the weekend, a mid-level shortwave ridge is forecast to move
across the north-central U.S., as west-northwesterly flow remains in
the Northeast. An axis of instability is forecast from the central
Plains into the Ohio Valley, which will be a focus for thunderstorm development. It appears that an isolated severe threat could develop
along and near the instability axis each afternoon and evening.
However, uncertainty is considerable concerning the details of any
    potential scenario.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Thursday/Day 4 to Saturday/Day 6...
A mid-level ridge is forecast to move eastward through the
north-central U.S. on Thursday and into the Great Lakes region on
Friday. At the surface, a moist axis is forecast to remain in place
from the central Plains east-southeastward into the lower Ohio
Valley. Moderate to strong instability along the moist axis will
make isolated severe thunderstorms possible each afternoon and
evening. Additionally, a severe threat may develop near mid-level
shortwave troughs that are forecast to move through the northern
    Plains and Mid-Atlantic on Friday.

On Saturday, a mid-level shortwave trough is forecast to move
through the Great Lakes region. Moderate to strong instability may
be in place over much of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio by afternoon.
Along the northern edge of the stronger instability, isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible from Lower Michigan eastward into the
central Appalachians Saturday afternoon. Additional severe storms
may develop along an axis of moderate instability over parts of the
central Plains in the afternoon and evening.

Concerning the severe potential from Thursday to Saturday,
considerable variance exists among the model solutions concerning
the position of features, suggesting uncertainty is still too great
    to add a threat area.

    ...Sunday/Day 7 and Monday/Day 8...
From Sunday into Monday, a broad cyclonic flow pattern is forecast
to develop over the northeastern U.S. A cold front is forecast to
move southward across the central and southern Appalachians. This
boundary would be the primary focus for convective development each
afternoon and evening. Ahead of the front, surface dewpoints in the
70s F along with moderate to strong instability would likely support
an isolated severe threat. However, considerable uncertainty exists
concerning the timing of the front. For this reason, predictability
is low at this extended range.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...D4/Friday...
Moderate to strong destabilization will again be possible on Friday,
near and south of a front extending from the central Plains and
Midwest into parts of the southern Mid-Atlantic. Considerable
uncertainty remains regarding the exact frontal position, but strong
storms will be possible in its vicinity. Most guidance depicts
rising midlevel heights and modest deep-layer flow/shear in the
vicinity of the frontal zone, which may tend to keep the severe
threat isolated. One possible exception will be in the Carolinas and
southern VA, where the glancing influence of a seasonably deep upper
trough over the Northeast may result in a somewhat more organized
severe threat, if sufficient destabilization can occur.

    ...D5/Saturday - D6/Sunday...
Some dampening of the upper ridge (potentially aided by one or more
MCVs emerging from the High Plains) may result in severe potential
emerging this weekend across parts of the Upper Midwest and Great
Lakes/Ohio Valley. However, details regarding timing of any
shortwave troughs and position of the primary frontal zone remain
    quite uncertain.

    ...D7/Monday - D8/Tuesday...
Extended-range guidance generally suggests potential for a
northwesterly flow regime to develop from the northern Plains into
parts of the East by early next week. Predictability remains quite
low regarding the extent to which stronger deep-layer flow impinges
upon favorable instability, but at least isolated severe potential
may eventually develop from parts of the north-central CONUS into
    the Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...D4/Saturday...
Most guidance depicts one or more midlevel vorticity maxima cresting
the upper ridge and moving across the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes
region on Saturday. However, there is considerable spread regarding
the timing of these features and the northward extent of substantial destabilization. The general pattern suggests some potential for MCS development across parts of the Midwest/Great Lakes region, but
uncertainty regarding the favored corridor precludes addition of 15% probabilities at this time.

    ...D5/Sunday...
Extended-range guidance is in general agreement depicting a cold
front that will move across parts of the Midwest, Great Lakes, Ohio
Valley, and Northeast on Sunday. This front will impinge upon a
reservoir of rich moisture and moderate to locally strong buoyancy,
which could result in a severe-thunderstorm threat along/ahead of
the front. Substantial timing differences remain regarding the
front, but severe probabilities may eventually be needed for this
    scenario.

    ...D6/Monday - D7/Tuesday...
A similar upper-level pattern is expected to persist into early next
week, with west-northwesterly midlevel flow extending from the
northern Plains into the Midwest/Great Lakes and
Northeast/Mid-Atlantic. This pattern will continue to favor at least
an isolated severe threat, with low-predictability MCS potential.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...D4/Sunday...
Strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are expected to develop
in association with a cold front that will across parts of the
Midwest, Ohio Valley, and northern Mid-Atlantic on Sunday.
Deep-layer shear is generally forecast to remain weak, but moderate unidirectional westerly flow (potentially 30-40 kt in the 850-500 mb
layer) within a favorably moist and unstable environment will
support potential for multiple storm clusters with wind-damage
    potential.

Uncertainty remains regarding frontal timing and the influence (if
any) of MCVs emanating from the Plains and Midwest. Also, given the
generally weak deep-layer shear, the magnitude of the severe threat
will be strongly influenced by the extent of pre-convective heating
and steepening of low-level lapse rates. Confidence is too low to
add a 15% area at this time, though severe probabilities will likely
be needed later in the outlook cycle.

    ...D5/Monday...
The front will move southeastward on Monday into parts of the
mid-MS/lower Ohio Valleys and Mid-Atlantic/Carolinas. Scattered
storms are again expected along/ahead of the front. Some weakening

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...D4/Sunday...
Strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are expected to develop
in association with a cold front that will move across parts of the
Midwest, Ohio Valley, and northern Mid-Atlantic on Sunday.

Some weakening
of low/midlevel flow is expected and deep-layer shear will remain
modest at best, so the severe threat may remain rather isolated.

Farther west, increasing moisture and instability within a modest west-northwesterly flow regime could result in some severe-storm
potential from the central High Plains into the Dakotas.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Mon...

A cold front is forecast to extend from the Lower OH/TN Valleys
toward the southern Mid-Atlantic Monday morning. Some severe risk
could develop ahead of the boundary as it impinges on a seasonally
moist and unstable airmass. However, vertical shear is expected to
remain modest (20-30 kt 0-6 km shear). Thunderstorm clusters could
pose a risk for locally damaging wind gusts, especially if
sufficient clustering occurs given moderate to strong downstream
instability. Severe probabilities may be needed in subsequent
outlooks if a more organized severe risk appears more likely.

    ...Days 5-8/Tue-Fri...

Low-amplitude westerly flow aloft will strengthen some around Day 5
or 6/Tue or Wed as a series of upper shortwave troughs move across
the northern Plains to the Great Lakes and Northeast through Day
7/Thu. This could result in increase severe potential across
portions of the Plains, Midwest, and perhaps the Northeast as the
upper troughs pivot eastward. Given a prior cold frontal passage and
surface high pressure across the Midwest through at least parts of
Tuesday, it is uncertain how low-level moisture/thermodynamic
recovery will evolve ahead of the upper feature. Depending on
trends, severe probabilities may become necessary in later outlooks.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Tue - NE/IA and vicinity...

An upper trough over the Great Lakes/Midwest will deepen on Tuesday,
with increasing northwesterly flow aloft overspreading portions of
the northern/central Plains to the Mid/Upper MS Valley. Rich
boundary layer moisture will be in place ahead of a south/southeastward-developing surface front. There is some
uncertainty regarding possible early-day convection of cloud debris
across parts of the region. However, most guidance suggests a
corridor of strong instability will develop by afternoon. Supercell
wind profiles will support organized cells, possibly growing upscale
with time along the surface front. Initially, a large hail risk
could transition toward more of a damaging wind risk, particularly
if upscale growth does occur as storms develop southeast through the
    evening.

    ...Days 5-8...

Upper trough will deepen across the eastern U.S. and persist into
the weekend. Meanwhile, an amplified upper ridge will remain in
place across the western U.S. A surface front will sag south and
east on Wednesday and Thursday as upper trough deepens and surface
high pressure builds over the Great Lakes. Some isolated severe risk
could emerge over the Mid-South/TN valley toward the Eastern
Seaboard in response, but deep-layer flow will remain weak and
low-level winds mostly parallel to the surface front, limiting a
    more substantial/organized risk.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Days 4-5/Wed-Thu -- Mid-South to Mid-Atlantic...

An amplifying upper pattern is expected mid-week into the weekend,
with troughing developing across the eastern half of the CONUS and
an upper riding across the western half. As the upper trough digs
across the eastern U.S., some severe potential could develop across
the Mid-South into the southern Mid-Atlantic on Days 4-5/Wed-Thu.
Building surface high pressure across the Great Lakes and stalled
upper troughing will result in a slowly sagging surface front arcing
across the region. With a very moist airmass in place, thunderstorms
are possible, and at least isolated damaging winds could accompany
this activity. However, potential appears too limited at this time
for 15 percent probabilities at the time scale.

    ...Days 7-8/Sat-Sun -- Northern/Central Plains...

Some severe potential could develop across the Plains during the
weekend on the eastern periphery of the amplified upper ridge.
Northwesterly flow aloft will remain enhanced across the region as
southerly low-level flow on the back side of the Great Lakes surface
high transports rich boundary layer moisture across the region. It
is uncertain if capping will preclude thunderstorm development, but
if any shortwave impulses migrate through northwesterly flow aloft,
    some severe risk could develop.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An amplified upper pattern will persist during the Day 4-8/Thu-Mon
period. An upper trough will remain over the eastern U.S. while
strong upper ridging spreads from the western U.S. toward the Plains
late in the period. This pattern will result in moderate
northwestern flow aloft across portions of the Plains into the
Midwest. Beneath northwesterly flow aloft and on the eastern
periphery of upper ridging, a seasonally moist airmass will be in
place from the Mid/Lower MO Valley into the Upper/Middle MS Valley.
Some severe potential could develop over these areas through the
period. However, capping may limit this potential, and with no
notable features fostering focused large-scale ascent, uncertainty
is too high to include 15 percent severe probabilities at this time.

    ...DISCUSSION...
For the Fri/D4 to Tue/D8 period, an upper ridge is forecast to
expand from the Four Corners states into the Southern Plains, with
northwest flow aloft over the Northern Plains shifting east across
    Midwest and into the Northeast.

On Fri/D4, scattered storms may occur across the Central Plains and
Cornbelt, with areas of moisture and instability beneath the 30-40
kt northwest flow regime favor scattered hail or strong wind gusts. Predictability is low due to the likelihood of ongoing storms or
convective systems early in the day, which may affect air mass
quality and effective boundary positioning. However, the NE/KS/IA/MO
region appears to be the most likely area for an eventual risk area.

Also on Fri/D4, storms are again expected over parts of the Mid
Atlantic to Carolinas, where 25 kt southwest flow in the midlevels
and a surface trough will support scattered storm clusters producing
locally damaging gusts. Areas of ongoing storms or outflows from the
previous day's convection may have an impact here as well as far as
the most favorable zones for additional severe storms.

There may also be some potential on Sat/D5 to Sun/D6 over parts of
the Mid Atlantic as cooling aloft with an upper trough moves across
the area. Timing of this trough will be critical, as will the
movement of the associated cold front.

    ...DISCUSSION...
For the Sat/D4 to Wed/D8 period, an upper ridge will persist from
the Southern Plains into the Southwest, while various shortwave
troughs affect the northern Plains, Great Lakes, and Northeast. The
primary trough amplification will occur from the Upper MS
Valley/Great Lakes on Sat/D4 into the Northeast through Mon/D6, with
moisture and instability supportive of strong storms generally
persisting over parts of the Southeast and Mid Atlantic. Shear will
remain weak over the East on Sat/D4, with areas of storms producing
strong gusts, perhaps marginal/isolated severe. By Sun/D5, strong
winds and cooling aloft will move across the Mid Atlantic and
Northeast, though antecedent precipitation will affect the warm
sector, as will veering low-level winds. Frontal timing will depend
on the upper trough speed, and overall predictability is low for
    Sun/D5.

To the west, daily corridors of thunderstorms are also likely over
parts of the central to northern Plains, with northwest flow
strongest on Sat/D4 and weakening into D5/D6. At least marginal
risk/low probabilities are likely in later outlooks for isolated
    wind/hail.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper trough will move slowly across the Northeast Sun/D4 into
Mon/D5, with thunderstorms likely ahead of a cold front. This front
will likely push offshore on Mon/D5 as a surface low ejects
northward across Quebec. A moist air mass will remain ahead of the
front across the Mid Atlantic and into New England, though ongoing
rain and thunderstorms reduce predictability as far as how unstable
it will become on Sun/D4. Also mitigating overall severe risk
appears to be relatively modest low-level wind speeds, with 10-20 kt
at 850 mb. These areas will be monitored for possible low severe
    probabilities in the coming days.

To the west, low severe probabilities are possible over parts of the
northern High Plains, as a small but progressive shortwave trough
moves out of the Northwest and across the northern Rockies atop the
upper ridge. West to northwest winds across the northern High Plains
combined with a lee trough and ribbon of 2000 J/kg MUCAPE should
support at least isolated hail/wind activity, perhaps from eastern
    MT into the Dakotas.

Additional storm potential, generally low-end, will be possible
Tue/D6 into Wed/D7 over much of the Midwest to Great Lakes, though predictability is quite low in forecasting the track of the northern
wave, which may begin phasing with a developing upper low over
    Ontario.

    ...DISCUSSION...
A mid-level trough will move across the Northeast on Monday and the
surface front will be mostly offshore, reducing the severe weather
threat. As this trough departs, ridging will build across the
Rockies. This will eventually set up a pattern featuring individual
mid-level shortwave troughs within northwesterly flow from the
northern Plains to the Midwest. Some severe weather will likely
occur with mid-level shortwave troughs within this flow, but these
details likely will not become more clear until the short term.

Model consensus indicates a stronger mid-level shortwave trough
traversing the Pacific Northwest on D7/Thursday. This pattern would
be favorable for some severe weather threat across Montana, but at
this time, it appears moisture will stay farther east. Therefore, no
    severe weather is anticipated.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Overall, the long range pattern will feature a ridge centered over
the southern High Plains which may shift slightly west through the
period. Some severe weather may occur within the northwesterly flow
pattern from the northern Plains to the Ohio Valley Tuesday/D4 to
Thursday/D6, but confidence is not high enough for probabilities at
this time. There is an emerging signal for a seasonably strong high
pressure to build into the eastern CONUS and shunt most of the
richer low-level moisture to the Gulf Coast states. If this occurs,
a relative lull in severe weather potential would exist from the
Mid-Atlantic and Northeast to the Upper Midwest into next weekend.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...D4/Wednesday to D6/Friday...
A mid-level trough will amplify across the Great Lakes region while
the mid-level ridge maintains its amplitude across the Rockies.
Within this pattern, some severe weather potential may exist as a
cold front moves from the Great Lakes to the Northeast. However, the
signal is not that strong and thus, it is unclear if more than an
isolated threat will exist; but the evolution of this front and the
instability associated with it will be monitored.

    ...D7/Saturday to D8/Sunday...
There is still a fair amount of uncertainty with the evolution of
the pattern by next weekend, but a general trend toward flattening
of the upper-level ridge is apparent in the deterministic, AI, and
ensemble guidance next weekend. This includes moderate flow within
the zonal region across the central/northern Plains and into the
Upper Midwest. This period will need to be watched closely as strong instability and moderate shear appear to overlap across a relatively
broad region, which should support diurnal thunderstorm activity
given the flattening of the ridge. The specific timing/location of
these threats will depend on evolution of the pattern and the
embedded shortwave troughs within the flow. However, it is worth
noting that the EC-AIFS and the AIGFS both have a signal for a more consolidated mid-level shortwave trough moving across the northern
Plains on Sunday/D8, which has also been consistently shown by the
EC-AIFS for the past 4 runs. If this trend continues, there may be opportunities for probabilities to be added in later outlooks.

    ...DISCUSSION...
A strong mid-level ridge will be centered over the Rockies on
Thursday with a broad trough centered across the Great Lakes. The
ridge will break down over the weekend with a more zonal flow with
embedded shortwave troughs extending from the Northwest to the
northern Plains and into the Northeast. Beyond this weekend,
guidance differs on the evolution of the pattern with considerable
    uncertainty.

    ...D7/Sunday to D8/Monday - Northern Plains...
Guidance continues to consolidate around an unseasonably strong
mid-level shortwave trough across the northern Plains into the Upper
Midwest on Sunday and Monday. There is still some spread around the
timing of this trough and also the degree of destabilization ahead
of it. However, despite these timing differences, a moderately
strong signal for an increasing severe weather threat in this period
appears to be emerging as a trough with a consistent convective
signal is shown by the ECMWF and GFS and also by the AI-GFS and
AI-ECMWF. Ensemble guidance shows a flattened ridge with a mid-level
jet streak across this region during the same timeframe.
Surprisingly, AI/ML guidance shows very little signal for a severe
threat across this region. Analysis of individual ensemble members
suggests this is likely reflective of the uncertainty in timing and
location of this trough and greater spread among the ensemble
guidance. Nonetheless, the potential for an organized severe weather
threat across the northern Plains and/or Upper Midwest late this
weekend into early next week appears to be increasing. If guidance
continues to consolidate with decreasing spread about the timing of
the trough, severe weather probabilities may eventually be needed.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Severe weather is possible across the northern Plains into the Upper
Midwest starting Day 4/Friday and continuing through the weekend.
The specific evolution remains unclear with quite a range of
ensemble solutions at this time. Nonetheless, expect severe weather
somewhere within this broad region each day.

    ...Day4/Friday...
As the upper-level ridge flattens on Friday, lee troughing will
develop across the northern High Plains. Moderate to strong
instability is forecast to develop across the western Dakotas ahead
of this lee trough. Any weak mid-level shortwave trough to provide a
focus for this threat remains nebulous. Therefore, the location of
any surface features remains unclear and thus, it is difficult to
highlight a more specific region with a greater severe weather
    probability at this time.

    ...Day5/Saturday...
Severe weather may be possible across portions of the Upper Midwest
on Saturday, but this threat will be somewhat dependent on the
location and intensity of Day 4 convection.

    ...Day6/Sunday...
The ECMWF and AI-ECMWF remain relatively consistent showing a trough
traversing the northwest on Saturday and emerging across the
northern Plains on Sunday. Meanwhile, the GFS and AI-GFS have
trended more progressive, and the individual GEFS members show
substantial spread in the upper-level pattern for Sunday/Day6. The
relative consistency in timing and location of the upper-level
trough from the ECMWF build confidence for this solution. However,
even the ECMWF and AI-ECMWF trended slightly less amplified with
this trough. Therefore, the combination of large spread in the upper
pattern from GEFS members and a slightly deamplified trend from the
ECMWF provide enough uncertainty to avoid adding probabilities at
    this time.

    ...DISCUSSION...
...D4/Saturday - Northern Plains to Upper Midwest...
A mid-level ridge will move slowly east across the Plains with
slight suppression through the day. A lee trough will consolidate
into a surface low across the northern Plains through the day
Saturday. Ahead of this surface low, strong instability is forecast
across South Dakota and vicinity. Despite the favorable environment
across this region, primary forcing will be focused on the nose of
the low-level jet across Iowa and into Wisconsin, well east of the
greatest instability and near the Canadian border. Therefore,
limited storm coverage precludes severe weather probabilities at
this time, but given the favorable environment, it will need to be
    monitored closely.

...D5/Sunday - North Dakota and Vicinity...
A mid-level shortwave trough will move from the Pacific Northwest to
the northern Plains Saturday/D4 and Sunday/D5. 00Z guidance has come
into fairly consistent agreement with the location and amplitude of
this trough across eastern Montana at 00Z Sunday evening. However,
there is considerable disagreement with the degree of
destabilization across North Dakota, where forcing will be greatest.
The GFS dry bias across most of the Plains has severely lessened the instability. However, despite this challenge, it is apparent that
most of the instability significantly southeast of the upper-level
forcing. The GFS-Para seems to have a more realistic handle on
low-level moisture/instability magnitude but it also shows a
significant disconnect between where this instability is located and
    the deeper forcing.

The deterministic ECMWF forecast shows a potentially significant
severe weather event across North Dakota with strong instability and
shear ahead of a robust convective QPF signal. This is supported by
the AI-ECMWF which shows a similar evolution. However, the
EC-ensemble mean of instability shows at least some trend toward the
GEFS with primary instability southeast of the best forcing.

It is also worth noting that the wave is forecast to eject across
North Dakota relatively late (~06Z) which may be a somewhat limiting
factor to a greater threat. This potential timing disconnect,
combined with some hint of limited overlap between the greatest
instability and the primary upper forcing, cast enough uncertainty
to preclude severe weather probabilities at this time. However, it
is worth noting that if a solution similar to the ECMWF
materializes, a significant severe weather event is possible.

    ...D6 and Beyond...
By early next week, the primary mid-level ridge appears to center
around the southern Appalachians with broad southwesterly flow from
the Southwest to the Great Lakes. Within this area of southwesterly
flow, multiple embedded mid-level shortwave troughs are forecast. Predictability of these smaller scale features is relatively low at
this range, but some continued severe weather threat will likely
persist around the periphery of the ridge from the Plains to the
Great Lakes and potentially into the Northeast.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...D4/Sunday - Northern Plains...
Some severe weather is possible across the northern Plains on
Sunday, but details remain unclear. The primary mid-level shortwave
trough and associated large-scale ascent is expected to traverse
northern Montana and North Dakota. However, the greater instability
is focused farther southeast across eastern South Dakota and
southwest Montana. The ECMWF shows enough instability developing
farther north into south-central North Dakota to support some severe
weather threat. The uncertainties regarding destabilization and
storm coverage preclude severe weather probabilities at this time.

    ...D5 and Beyond...
The forecast next week features multiple mid-level shortwave troughs
and considerable uncertainty with the timing of these features.
However, there is a larger scale trend toward a ridge building
across the Plains with northwesterly flow from the Upper Midwest to
the Mid-Atlantic/New England. Moderate to strong instability along
this corridor will support some severe weather potential next week.
However, specific areas of greater severe weather potential will
depend on the timing and amplitude of embedded mid-level shortwave
troughs. Therefore, no probabilities can be added at this time.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper ridge will meander eastward across the central and eastern
CONUS through the week, with multiple mid-level shortwave troughs
and other smaller embedded impulses poised to pivot around the ridge
and traverse the northern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic. Several days
of at least scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are expected
along the periphery of the upper ridge as appreciably strong
mid-level flow overspreads a seasonably moist boundary layer,
especially during the middle of the week. By the end of the week,
appreciable instability builds back into the northern Plains and
upper MS Valley, but predictability is too low to ascertain any
localized severe potential this far in advance.

...OH Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England...
The strongest signal for severe thunderstorms currently exists for
Days 5-6 (Tuesday-Wednesday). Guidance differs on the details
regarding placement and timing of mid-level troughs/impulses on Day
5 (Tuesday), though severe thunderstorms will probably develop
somewhere between the eastern Great Lakes to the Eastern Seaboard.
Once details become clearer on where storm development is most
likely, 15 percent severe probabilities will likely be introduced.

For Day 6 (Wednesday), there is a general consensus among
medium-range guidance that at least one impulse will traverse the
eastern Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic/southern New England
corridor. A 50+ kt mid-level northwesterly 500 mb jet will
overspread mid 60s F surface dewpoints, yielding both 1500+ J/kg
MLCAPE and 40-50 kts of effective bulk shear amid a convective
signal. As such, a 15 percent severe area has been introduced for
Wednesday where these aforementioned ingredients best overlap.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Medium range guidance consensus depicts a persistent ridge fortified
across the central CONUS through the Days 4-8 (Tuesday-Saturday)
period. Multiple mid-level shortwave troughs and smaller scale
impulses will pivot around the broader upper ridge and traverse the
Pacific Northwest to northern Plains, Great Lakes, and Northeast
through the week. The best chance for rounds of organized strong to
severe thunderstorms will be with impulses overspreading a moist
boundary layer from the Upper MS Valley to the southern New England/Mid-Atlantic regions. Details regarding the timing and
placement of some of these impulses varies among medium-range
guidance, rendering predictability too low for several potential
    severe scenarios.

    ...Days 4-7 (Tuesday-Friday) - Northeast/Mid-Atlantic...
The Northeast to Mid-Atlantic will experience the east-northeast
periphery of the aforementioned upper ridge, with multiple impulses
expected to overspread the region through the middle of the week. At
least isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are expected each
day Tuesday-Friday. At the moment, medium range guidance consensus
shows the strongest signal in a mid-level impulse impinging on
southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic on Day 5/Wednesday, where
    severe probabilities have been maintained.

Guidance also depicts these same regions to have adequate vertical
wind shear and instability Tuesday and Thursday, perhaps even
extending into Day 7/Friday. Like Wednesday, several members of
medium range ML/AI generated guidance also has severe probabilities
over these regions Days 4-7. Unlike Wednesday though, deterministic
medium range guidance varies in place and time of the more subtle
impulses expected to support severe weather over the Northeast. It
is acknowledged that severe probabilities will likely be needed in
the future. However, probabilities have been withheld outside of
Wednesday out of prudence given the degree of changes in forecast
details expected in the coming days.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper ridge will remain centered over the TN Valley/central
Appalachians through the end of the week before retrograding
westward toward the Plains by next weekend. Multiple mid-level
impulses and shortwave troughs will traverse the upper ridge this
week before upper troughing dominates the Interior West toward the
end of the extended forecast period. The best chances for severe
thunderstorms will be with the aforementioned impulses traversing
the ridge over the Great Lakes to the East Coast, particularly
during the middle of the week.

    ...Days 4-6 (Wednesday-Friday) - Northeast to Mid-Atlantic...
Severe probabilities have been maintained for portions of the lower
Hudson Valley into the Mid-Atlantic Day 4/Wednesday, as guidance
consensus continues to show a well-timed shortwave trough
overspreading this region. Medium-range guidance continues to show a
convective precipitation signal accompanying this impulse along with appreciable buoyancy and vertical wind shear. It should be noted
that convective overturning from Day 3 (Tuesday) storms may
stabilize part of this area, with the specific location of storms
becoming dependent on residual baroclinic boundaries. As such, the
exact placement of Wednesday's severe probabilities may need to be
    adjusted accordingly.

Likewise, for Day 5/Thursday, another mid-level impulse will
traverse the northeast extent of the upper ridge and overspread the Mid-Atlantic. Given adequate buoyancy and shear likely remaining in
place, 15 percent severe probabilities have been introduced. As with
the previous day, these probabilities may need some adjustment in
future outlooks based on where airmass modification along baroclinic
    zones occurs.

Medium-range guidance continues to show a pronounced mid-level
impulse, accompanied by adequate deep-layer shear and buoyancy,
impinging on the Mid-Atlantic on Day 6/Friday, which would support
at least an isolated severe threat. ML/AI guidance also suggests
that the Friday severe threat would encompass the ending stages of a
potential multi-day severe episode. Given the multiple preceding
days of storms and constant shift in favorable corridors modulated
by baroclinic zones, confidence is very low for realistically
pinpointing a focused severe area. However, it appears the Delmarva
may be the most likely area for seeing organized storm activity.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper ridge will persist across the TN Valley this week before
retrograding to the Plains states and further amplifying into early
next week. As this occurs, upper troughing will also amplify along
the East Coast and Interior West. The best chances for severe storms
will be closer to the East Coast Days 4-5 (Thursday-Friday) as a
series of mid-level impulses will crest the Ridge and traverse the
Mid Atlantic, where instability will be present.

    ...Days 4-6 (Thursday-Saturday) - Mid-Atlantic Region...
The amplification of the broader upper trough along the East Coast
will result in a farther southward shift of accompanying mid-level
impulses, which will promote deep-layer ascent over the Mid-Atlantic
region. The severe threat may also be modulated farther south given
established baroclinic zones from prior rounds of storms. On
Thursday, storms should develop along a differential heating zone
somewhere around Delmarva or points immediately west. Surface
dewpoints in the upper 60s to near 70 F beneath seasonably cool
temperatures aloft will yield 1500-3000 J/kg MLCAPE. Given over 30
kts of effective bulk shear expected, multicells, supercells, and
short bowing segments will likely develop, accompanied by a severe
    wind/hail threat.

For Day 5 (Friday), the upper trough will amplify further, allowing
for a surface differential heating zone to become established across
the southern Mid-Atlantic, where adequate moisture and instability
will likely coincide with modest vertical wind shear, supporting
another day of severe potential. Damaging gusts will likely be the
    main threat.

Some lingering severe potential may exist across the Carolinas on
Day 6/Saturday before the upper trough departs the region, as
indicated by some ML/AI guidance. However, predictability on the
timing of details (i.e. baroclinic boundaries and overlapping
corridors of vertical wind shear) is too low for the introduction of probabilities this outlook.

...Day 4 (Thursday) - Upper Midwest...
Some guidance depicts the potential for severe thunderstorms along
an effective warm front across portions of the Upper Midwest, where
rich low-level moisture will reside ahead of a surface trough. Given
stronger mid-level flow and cooler temperatures overspreading the
warm front, enough shear and instability may manifest to support a
severe threat. While calibrated guidance has been ramping up severe probabilities over this area, synoptic features (such as a
pronounced mid-level impulse) do not appear strongly evident in
deterministic guidance, precluding the addition of severe
    probabilities to this outlook.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper ridge will meander from the Mid-MS and TN Valleys toward
the Plains through the extended period, with upper troughs poised to
amplify along the East Coast and over the Interior West. Multiple
mid-level impulses will traverse this flow pattern, translating from
the Pacific Northwest to the northern Plains and Upper MS Valley,
then the Mid-Atlantic. It is in this elongated, roughly zonal
corridor that thunderstorm potential will be highest.

The severe threat with the relatively highest degree of
predictability will be across the Mid-Atlantic Days 4-5 (Friday and
Saturday). On Friday, a diffuse differential heating boundary,
generated by thunderstorm clusters from previous days, will likely
become established somewhere across the southern Mid-Atlantic. As an
upper trough amplifies over this differential heating boundary,
thunderstorms should develop amid rich low-level moisture beneath
stronger flow aloft. The more organized storms may produce damaging
wind gusts (hence the maintenance of 15 percent severe
probabilities). Calibrated ML/AI guidance suggests that the severe
threat may persist into Saturday across the Carolina Piedmont.
However, deterministic guidance shows the upper trough advancing
further into the Atlantic this weekend, along with upper support. As
such, storm coverage and initiation mechanisms for Saturday remain
too unclear this far in advance for the introduction of severe
    probabilities at this time.

Amplification of the Interior West upper trough will support surface
lee troughing and accompanying low-level moisture advection across
the Plains states. While at least isolated severe thunderstorms may
occur any where from the northern/central High Plains toward the
Upper MS Valley, predictability of any severe potential is too low
    this far out.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Upper ridging will prevail over much of the central and eastern
CONUS into the middle of next week. The upper trough meandering over
the Interior West will eventually eject into the northern Plains and
pivot around the upper ridge while another upper trough (currently
along the East Coast) slowly drifts out to sea. As this occurs,
surface high pressure and cooler air will overspread the
    northeastern quadrant of the U.S.

In the extended period, the best chance for some severe storms will
be in and around the Carolinas on Day 4/Saturday. A diffuse
differential heating zone will continue to drift south while being
reinforced from storms on previous days. By Saturday afternoon,
heating along this boundary, amid a very moist environment, will
promote damaging gust potential, hence the introduction of 15
    percent severe probabilities.

There is also some hint at an MCS propagating southward across
eastern ND into northern and central MN along a moist and unstable
surface warm front on Saturday as well. While ML/AI calibrated
guidance consensus is beginning to elevate severe probabilities in
this area, upper support for this feature is quite weak at best,
limiting confidence for the introduction of severe probabilities
    this outlook.

Lastly, the ejection of an upper trough into the northern Plains
early next week (i.e. next Monday or Tuesday) will support surface
lee troughing and the northward advection of rich low-level moisture
beneath cooler temperatures and stronger flow aloft. At least an
isolated severe thunderstorm risk may materialize from this
scenario, but details on timing and placement of key features are
too nebulous for the confident introduction of severe probabilities
    this outlook.

A mid-level trough will persist across the central CONUS through
early next week, before gradually weakening in favor of more
amplified, progressive upper troughs. Through the beginning of next
week, a few impulses ejecting into the northern Plains may be
accompanied by enough buoyancy and vertical wind shear to support an
isolated severe threat. However, confidence is too low to delineate
a more focused severe threat at this time. Likewise, there is a lack
of consensus among medium-range deterministic and ML/AI guidance
regarding the track and timing of any particular shortwave upper
trough later next week, precluding the introduction of any severe
    probabilities this outlook.

...Days 4-6/Mon-Wed -- Northern Plains to Great Lakes...

An upper shortwave trough is forecast to move across the Canadian
Prairies and Upper Midwest through Tuesday, before continuing east
toward the Lower Great Lakes on Wednesday. This will shift the
amplified upper ridge over the Plains at the beginning of the period
eastward over the Midwest, before flattening the ridge over the
Great Lakes through mid-week. As this occurs, enhanced
west/southwesterly flow will overspread portions of the northern
Plains/Upper Midwest and eventually the Great Lakes. A surface low
will track east/northeast across central Canada, and a trailing cold
front will move across the region on Tuesday/Wednesday. Some severe
potential could develop across the Dakotas into the Upper Midwest
Monday and Tuesday given enhance southwesterly flow aloft and
sufficient moisture ahead of the surface boundary. However, warm
midlevels may result in capping while large-scale ascent will be
focused mostly north of the international border. As a result,
severe potential and storm coverage are uncertain, precluding 15
    percent probabilities at this time.

The cold front will weaken on Wednesday as the upper low lifts into
northern Ontario, and deep-layer flow will veer, becoming mostly
westerly. While some severe potential could develop into parts of
the Midwest and eastern Great Lakes vicinity, confidence is low
regarding where the greatest risk could emerge.

    ...Days 7-8/Thu-Fri...

The upper ridge is forecast to once again amplify over the Rockies
and into the Plains late in the week and severe potential appears
    limited.

    ...DISCUSSION...
...Days 4-6/Tue-Thu -- Central Plains to Great Lakes/Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic...

An upper shortwave trough will shift east across the Upper
Midwest/Great Lakes and northeast through Thursday. An associated
surface low will mainly remain over Canada, but a trailing cold
front will sweep across parts of the central Plains and Upper
Midwest on Tuesday, before continuing south and east into Kansas and
across the Great Lakes on Wednesday. By Thursday, the boundary is
expected to continue south and east across the Ohio Valley and
Mid-Atlantic. Stronger large-scale ascent will likely remain focused
near and north of the international border. Furthermore, the
corridor of deeper boundary layer moisture may be somewhat limited,
especially Tuesday into Wednesday, due to a prior cold frontal
passage and surface high pressure over the Midwest. Nevertheless,
enhanced deep-layer flow, and corridors of at least modest
instability along the cold front could support some severe risk.
However, confidence in 15 percent or greater coverage is low at this
    time frame.

...Days 7-8/Fri-Sat -- Northern/Central Plains to Upper Midwest...

At the end of the period, another upper shortwave trough may dig
southeast from the Pacific Northwest and into the Plains. Another,
perhaps stronger, cold front could sweep across the Plains and the
Mid/Upper MS Valley. Depending on moisture return in the wake of the
earlier cold frontal passage, some severe risk could develop during
the weekend. Furthermore, large spread exists among various guidance
regarding the evolution of the this upper trough, resulting in
uncertainty in greater corridors of severe potential.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper shortwave trough will move from the Great Lakes and over
the Northeast through Day 5/Thursday. As this occurs, a cold front
will develop southeast and east across much of the Midwest and
Northeast. Some strong to severe thunderstorm potential could
develop near the front, especially on Wednesday across parts of the
Midwest. However, deep-layer flow will largely remain parallel to
the boundary and stronger flow aloft will remain displaced to the
    north of better instability.

Lower amplitude westerly upper-level flow is expected on Day
6/Friday before another upper trough digs southeast across the
western U.S. and emerges into the Plains by Day 8/Sunday. Some
severe potential could return to the Plains during the weekend as
low-level moisture returns across the region and lee cyclogenesis
occurs with the approach of the late-period upper trough. Trends
will be monitored and probabilities may become necessary across
parts of the central Plains vicinity if confidence in severe
    potential increase.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An upper shortwave trough will weaken as it spread east across the
Northeast on Day 4/Thursday. As this occurs, a surface cold front
will shift east/southeast across the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic.
A moist airmass will be in place, but vertical shear will weaken
through the day and deep-layer flow will remain parallel to the
surface boundary. Thunderstorms are expected in the vicinity of the
front, but may tend to be just to the cool side of the boundary.
Nevertheless, some low-end severe potential could develop from the
Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic as the front sags southward across
    the region.

During the weekend into early next week, forecast guidance suggests
a more progressive upper pattern will emerge across the northern
tier of the U.S. A series of shortwave upper troughs will move from
the northern Rockies to the Great Lakes and eventually the Northeast
during this time. Some severe risk is likely to develop ahead of the
upper shortwave troughs around the Day 5/Friday to Day 8/Monday time
period. However, large spread exists in both the timing and
intensity of these upper trough, resulting in vastly different
evolution and timing of key surface features (mainly surface low
position). These differences have large implications for where the
best corridors of severe potential will ultimately develop, but
severe probabilities may become necessary in later outlooks for
portions the northern/central Plains to the Upper Midwest during the
    weekend.

    ...DISCUSSION...
...Days 4-5/Fri-Sat -- Plains to the Great Lakes vicinity...

Severe potential could develop across portions of the Plains into
the Upper Midwest on Day 4/Friday as boundary layer moisture spreads
northward ahead of a southeastward-advancing cold front. Moderate to
strong destabilization ahead of the front, and enhanced vertical
shear courtesy of a modest upper shortwave trough moving across the
northern Plains/Upper Midwest vicinity, should be sufficient for
organized convection mainly from Friday evening into early Saturday.

Some severe potential could persist into Day 5 Saturday as the
surface front stalls over the central/southern Plains vicinity but
continues eastward across the upper Great Lakes region. A moist
boundary layer will be in place, but stronger flow aloft will become
increasing displaced to the north of stronger instability,
precluding 15 percent delineation at this time.

    ...Days 6-8/Sun-Tue...

An upper trough over the northwestern U.S. will develop eastward
across the Plains and Great Lakes early next week. Another cold
front will move across the area, and some severe potential could
again sweep across the Plains to the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes
vicinity. Medium range forecast guidance generally maintains
stronger instability offset from enhanced flow aloft, partly due to
the early cold frontal passage in the Day 4-5/Friday-Saturday time
frame and strong surface high pressure over the Great Lakes in the
wake of that frontal passage. Trends will be monitored and
probabilities could become necessary in later outlooks.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Day 4/Sat - Central Plains...

A cold front will stall across the central Plains on Saturday.
Low-level east/southeasterly flow will maintain rich boundary layer
moisture across KS and into eastern CO. Early day convection may be
ongoing in the vicinity of the stalled boundary within the low-level
warm advection regime. It is uncertain if airmass recovery and
renewed thunderstorm development will occur within the unstable warm
sector given nebulous large-scale ascent and modest vertical shear.
While low severe potential may eventually evolve, probability
appears less than 15 percent at this time.

...Days 5-6/Sun-Mon -- Central Plains to the Great Lakes...

An upper trough is forecast to move from the northern Rockies to the
Great Lakes through early Day 7/Tuesday. This will bring enhanced
southwesterly flow to portions of the northern/central Plains into
the Great Lakes, particularly on Monday. With the approach of the
trough, lee low development is forecast across the northern/central
High Plains on Sunday. Increasing southerly low-level flow will
transport moisture northward to NE/SD ahead of a
southeastward-advancing cold front. This could support some severe
risk across parts of the northern/central Plains and Mid-MO Valley
vicinity on Sunday. However, large spread exists among forecast
guidance with regards to the surface low placement, northward extent
of moisture return, and frontal position. As a result, corridors of
greater severe potential are uncertain on Sunday.

As the upper trough continues to lift east/northeast through the
Great Lakes on Monday, severe potential could develop eastward into
parts of the Mid/Upper MS Valley and upper Great Lakes vicinity.
Stronger deep-layer flow may become displaced to the north of better instability, and similarly large model spread continues into this
time frame. Depending on trends, severe probabilities could
eventually be needed for Sunday and/or Monday.

    ...Days 7-8/Tue-Wed...

Lower amplitude, quasi-zonal flow is expected to develop by the end
of the forecast period as the early-week uppers shortwave trough
lifts into eastern Canada and the sub-tropical high begins to
rebuild over the southern U.S. This should largely limit severe
potential, though abundant moisture will reside from the southern
Plains into the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic and daily sporadic strong
    storms could still occur.

    ...DISCUSSION...
...Days 4-5/Sun-Mon -- Central Plains to the Mid-MS Valley...

A progressive upper pattern is expected early in the week. An
initial upper trough over the Great Lakes will spread east as upper
ridging builds across the Plains. Meanwhile, another upper trough
over the Northwest will shift east, moving across the northern
Plains and Upper Midwest on Monday, breaking down the upper ridge.
Surface high pressure over the Great Lakes on Sunday will suppress
low-level moisture southward across the central/southern Plains and
the Mid-MS/Lower OH Valleys. A very moist airmass will be in place
to the south of a stalled frontal boundary across the region.
Widespread showers and thunderstorms will be possible near the
surface boundary within low-level warm advection over the Middle to
Lower MO Valley. Vertical shear will be weak, but strong instability
could some strong gust potential, though convection may stay mainly
to the cool side of the surface boundary. Overall, severe potential
appears less than 15 percent on Sunday.

Severe potential will likely increase on Monday as the upper ridge
breaks down and stronger southwesterly flow overspread the
northern/central Plains to the Mid/Upper MS Valleys. Rich boundary
layer moisture will be in place ahead of a southeastward-advancing
cold front. Convection may be ongoing from the northern Plains into
IA/IL Monday morning. This results in some uncertainty in position
of best severe potential. Currently, the best overlap of rich
boundary layer moisture, strong instability and favorable shear near
the advancing cold front appears to be from eastern NE into IA and
vicinity. A 40+ kt southwesterly low-level jet is expected to
develop during the nighttime hours across KS/NE into IA, oriented
along the surface front, supporting an organized line of storms
tracking southeast ahead of the front, and promoting damaging wind
potential. Overall, the pattern appears favorable for at least
isolated severe storms on Monday, and a 15 percent delineation has
    been included.

    ...Days 6-8/Tue-Thu...

The early week surface front will stall from the southern Plains to Mid-MS/Lower OH Valley through mid-week. A very moist airmass will
persist south of the boundary, and persistent low-level warm
advection could favor bouts of heavy rain. While some low-level
severe potential could develop where pockets of strong
destabilization occurs, weak vertical shear should largely limit
    more widespread potential, precluding probabilities.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Medium-range guidance indicates that a remnant cyclonic circulation
and associated mid-level troughing, likely accelerating across the
northern U.S. Rockies and adjacent international border vicinity by
early Monday, may be accompanied by substantive surface cyclogenesis
across southern Manitoba through northwestern Ontario Monday through
Monday night, before continuing east-northeastward into the higher
latitudes. It appears that this will occur coincident with the
transition to a more progressive regime across the northern
mid-latitude Pacific, including the gradual suppression of a
blocking high initially to the southeast of the Aleutians. It also
appears likely to coincide with the redevelopment of rather
prominent mid/upper ridging becoming centered across the Tennessee Valley/southern Appalachians vicinity, and increasingly influential
across much of the central and eastern U.S. into the middle to
latter portions of next week, before becoming suppressed and
    retrograding west-southwestward.

In association with this regime, although there is some uncertainty
concerning low-level moisture return and destabilization, it still
appears that an evolving warm frontal zone could become a focus for
organized strong to severe thunderstorm development across parts of
the middle Missouri Valley toward Upper Midwest late Monday
afternoon into Monday night. Thereafter, the potential for
organized severe thunderstorm development appears generally low,
though there may still be areas of strong storm development with
rather isolated or marginal severe weather potential.

    ...DISCUSSION...
In the wake of a vigorous short wave perturbation and associated
surface cyclone accelerating northeast of the upper Great Lakes into
the higher latitudes, a lingering near-surface frontal zone across
the lower Great Lakes and Ohio Valley into the central Great Plains
may provide a focus for occasional thunderstorm development into the
middle to latter portion of next week. However, this may largely
remain beneath the northern periphery of initially prominent
mid/upper ridging slowly beginning to retrograde from the Southeast
toward the Southwestern international border area. Forcing for
ascent and destabilization may not support more than rather isolated
and/or marginal severe thunderstorm potential, and even latest
available AI guidance generally suggests that this limited potential
will wane by late week into next weekend.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Latest medium-range model output indicates that the initially
prominent Southeastern mid-level ridge will slowly retrograde west-southwestward and become increasingly suppressed across the
lower latitudes late this coming work week into next weekend.
However, it appears that the evolving westerlies across the U.S.
will remain modest to weak, with little potential for appreciable
surface cyclogenesis. While guidance suggests some continuing
potential for widely scattered strong thunderstorm development near
a lingering frontal zone across the Ohio into lower Missouri Valley

generally negligible risk for organized severe thunderstorm

    ...DISCUSSION...
Latest medium-range model output continues to indicate that
initially prominent Southeastern mid-level ridging will gradually
become suppressed late this week into next weekend. However, short
wave developments within the westerlies become more unclear by next
weekend into early next week. In general, it appears that a modest
to weak split flow will evolve across much of North America, as
larger positive mid-level height anomalies tend to develop across
    interior Canada.

It is possible that diurnal destabilization will remain sufficient
to support areas of stronger daily thunderstorm development across
the U.S., supported by forcing for ascent associated with these
evolving perturbations. However, any associated severe weather
seems unlikely to become particularly well organized and probably
will remain rather isolated and/or marginal in nature.

The latest medium-range model output still suggests that an
initially prominent mid-level ridge, across the central and southern
Great Plains through lower Ohio/Tennessee Valleys at the outset of
the period, will become suppressed late this week into next weekend.
But, this may be a bit slower to occur than previous guidance has
suggested, and the coinciding and subsequent pattern evolution
across much of North America has become more unclear due to model
spread. In general, though, it still appears that modest to weak
split westerlies will prevail, with little appreciable signal for
substantive surface cyclogenesis. Barring appreciable change, the
potential for organized severe thunderstorm development still
appears low through at least early next week.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Latest medium-range model output suggests that modest pre-frontal
surface troughing across the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandle vicinity
through south central/eastern Kansas, and perhaps the slow moving
frontal zone across northeastern Kansas through northern
Missouri/southeastern Iowa, may provide focus for scattered strong
thunderstorm development late Saturday afternoon into evening. This
may be supported by forcing for ascent downstream of weak
larger-scale mid-level troughing slowly progressing across the
Rockies into Great Plains, with deep boundary-layer mixing along the
surface trough and higher boundary-layer moisture content along the
frontal zone contributing to thermodynamic profiles potentially
conducive to severe weather. However, with the belt of stronger lower/mid-tropospheric flow associated with a preceding impulse
tending to weaken and/or shift eastward near or to the south of the
Great Lakes region, it still appears that this potential will remain
relatively isolated in coverage and/or marginal in nature.

Thereafter, late this weekend through early next week, the spread
among model output concerning the mid/upper flow evolution
increases. However, even among the differing solutions, there is
little readily apparent that indicates an increase in organized
    severe thunderstorm potential.

    ...DISCUSSION...
The latest ECENS and GEFS appear similar in their depiction of the
evolving mid/upper flow late this weekend through the middle of next
week. A weak mid-level trough and embedded low emerging from the
Intermountain West may weaken further while slowly progressing
across the central Great Plains through Ohio Valley, to the south of
a transient building mid-level high near the central Canadian/U.S.
border into the upper Great Lakes/northwestern Ontario vicinity.
Toward the middle to latter part of next week, remnant mid-level
troughing may tend to dig into and across the Mid Atlantic, as
mid-level ridging builds again across the Great Plains/Mississippi
Valley, downstream of a weak mid-level perturbation progressing into
the Southwest, and amplifying troughing within the stronger
westerlies offshore of the Pacific coast.

In association with this evolving regime, generally weak deep-layer
mean wind fields and increasingly limited potential for stronger destabilization are likely to minimize the risk for severe weather.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Initially zonal mid-level flow, with embedded low-amplitude impulses
traversing the central CONUS early next week, will give way to
gradual amplification of an upper ridge over the central U.S. The
best chance for any severe thunderstorms will be on Day 4/Monday
across the TN Valley, where a surface cold front, preceded by rich
low-level moisture, will be slow to clear the region. Thereafter,
drier low-level conditions will prevail across much of the central
and eastern CONUS, with surface high pressure poised to settle over
much of the U.S. between the MS River and the Appalachians, limiting
    the severe threat.

    ...DISCUSSION...
An initially zonal mid-level flow regime will gradually transition
to a more amplified upper-air pattern, characterized by ridging over
the Plains states through the week into next weekend. As this
occurs, low-level moisture will continue to be shunted southward as
cooler mid-level temperatures remain relatively confined west of the
Rockies, and flow aloft remains modest at best. As a result, there
are no clear signals for an organized threat of severe thunderstorms
across the CONUS for Days 4-8 (Tuesday-Saturday).

    ...DISCUSSION...
Upper ridging will persist over the central U.S. through the
forecast period, with a meandering upper trough evolving into a
cut-off upper low off of the Mid-Atlantic Coast and an upper trough
amplifying over the Interior West late this week into next weekend.
Through the week, a relatively dry low-level airmass will settle
east of the MS River and west of the Rockies, limiting the severe
threat over the western and eastern third of the U.S. Some modest
moisture return is likely across the Plains given lee troughing.
However, upper support will be weak, which should limit the severe
threat across the central U.S. as well. As such, no organized severe
threats seem apparent for the CONUS Days 4-8 (Wednesday-Sunday).

    ...DISCUSSION...
Upper ridging will persist over the central U.S. while a mid-level
cut-off low continues to meander just off of the Mid-Atlantic
coastline and multiple mid-level troughs traverse the Pacific
Northwest later this week into early next week. Through the Days 4-8
period, moisture return will be most prevalent over the Plains
states given surface lee troughing, and it is here where
thunderstorms will be most likely. However, the overall lack of
overlapping shear, buoyancy, and large-scale lift suggest that
organized severe potential is too low for the introduction of
    probabilities this outlook.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Upper ridging across the Plains and upper troughing over the western
and eastern U.S. will persevere through the weekend, before a more
progressive pattern takes shape and an upper trough ejects into the
Plains states early next week. Through the weekend, thunderstorm
chances should remain confined to the High Plains and points
westward, with little indication of an organized severe threat. By
early next week, there is some consensus among medium-range
deterministic guidance of a surface low developing over the central
Plains, encouraging low-level moisture advection beneath cooling
temperatures and increasing west-southwesterly flow aloft. However,
guidance does not show a favorable overlap of instability or
vertical wind shear, with AI/ML calibrated guidance also not
depicting a signal for severe, so probabilities have been withheld
    this outlook.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Upper ridging over the Plains will continue to break down this
weekend in favor of a more progressive upper-air pattern next
week.At least one pronounced mid-level trough will eject into the
Plains and Mid- to Upper-MS Valley in the Days 6-8/Monday-Wednesday period.Deterministic medium-range guidance consensus depicts surface
low development over the central and southern Plains in this
time-frame, encouraging seasonable low-level moisture return in the
    process.

At the very least, moisture-driven buoyancy and subsequent scattered thunderstorm development should occur across the central and
southern Plains into the Mid- to Upper MS Valley next
Monday-Wednesday. However, vertical wind shear accompanying this
pattern is still expected to be weak. While a localized severe
threat may materialize at some point Monday-Wednesday, relevant
details are too unclear to pinpoint with probabilities at this
point, in agreement with the consensus of ML/AI calibrated guidance.

    ...DISCUSSION...
A mid-level cutoff low will meander along the East Coast and will
gradually depart the region early next week as a mid-level trough
amplifies over the Rockies and impinges on the central U.S. Medium
range guidance consensus varies in the morphology of the upper
trough. The 00Z GFS features a rapidly progressing upper wave over
the Plains to the OH Valley Days 5-7 (Monday-Wednesday), while the
    00Z Euro shows a mid-level trough evolving into a cut-off low that
meanders over the Plains through the week. Both scenarios result in
an appreciably strong surface low developing over the central Plains
sometime mid next week, accompanied by near 70 F surface dewpoints
and a buoyancy/vertical shear overlap supportive of a severe threat.
However, too much variability in guidance precludes the delineation
    of severe probabilities this outlook.

Upper troughing over the Interior West, containing multiple smaller
impulses, will gradually progress eastward to the Plains states
through the middle of the week (Days 5-7/Tuesday-Thursday) before
another mid-level trough approaches the central U.S. by next
weekend. Deterministic medium-range guidance consensus depicts the
development of a surface low over the southern Plains around Day
6/Wednesday, accompanied by seasonal low-level moisture return.
However, guidance also depicts a poor overlap of vertical wind shear
with the moist axis, likely inhibiting greater severe potential, in
agreement with calibrated ML/AI guidance consensus. As such, no
    probabilities were introduced this outlook.

An upper trough is poised to gradually track eastward across the

Surface low development is likely across the southern Plains
sometime in the Days 5-6 (Wednesday-Thursday) time frame, when
low-level moisture advection and accompanying buoyancy will
appreciably increase. However, vertical wind shear is expected to be
limited, so organized severe potential does not appear evident,
though at least isolated severe is possible across the southern
Plains around next Thursday. Thereafter, a cold front will progress southeastward across much of the CONUS, displacing buoyancy across
much of the Plains and MS Valley, further limiting the severe

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Wednesday/Day 4 to Friday/Day 6...
During the mid-week, an upper-level low is forecast to move slowly
eastward from the southern Rockies into the southern Plains. As the
system approaches, low-level moisture will advect northward into the
southern and central Plains. A pocket of moderate instability may
develop over the southern High Plains by Wednesday afternoon. As
surface heating is maximized Wednesday afternoon, thunderstorms are
expected to form along and near the instability axis. A mid-level
jet, associated with the approaching system, is forecast to move
into the southern High Plains in the afternoon. This feature will
increase deep-layer shear. The timing of the mid-level jet is still
in question, but if the mid-level jet can move into the southern
Plains soon enough, then a severe threat could develop. Under this
scenario, isolated supercells with large hail and severe wind gusts
    will be possible.

From Thursday into Friday, the upper-level trough is forecast to
remain over the southern High Plains. Ahead of the slow-moving
system, a moist and somewhat unstable airmass is forecast to be in
place both Thursday and Friday over parts of east-central Texas. On
these two days, deep-layer shear may be strong enough for an
isolated severe threat, mainly with storms that form near the
    instability axis.

    ...Saturday/Day 7 and Sunday/Day 8...
Over the weekend, an upper-level trough is forecast to move across
the central U.S. Ahead of the trough, a moist and somewhat unstable
airmass is forecast to be in place over much of the Southeast, where
scattered to numerous thunderstorms will be possible each day. Of
the two days, the strongest instability is forecast to be on Sunday,
when an isolated severe threat will be possible. Uncertainty
regarding the spatial extent and magnitude is substantial at this
    range.

    ...DISCUSSION...
    ...Thursday/Day 4 to Friday/Day 5...
On Thursday, a mid-level trough is forecast to move through the
southern Plains. Ahead of the trough, an axis of moderate
instability is forecast to be in place Thursday afternoon from
central Texas north-northeastward into southwest Missouri.
Thunderstorm development is expected along and near parts of the
instability axis during the afternoon and evening. The area with the
greatest potential for severe storms appears to be across central
Texas, where current model forecast have moderate instability and
moderate deep-layer juxtaposed. However, the favored corridor is
forecast to be narrow, and there is some uncertainty concerning the
placement of the instability axis. Severe wind gusts and hail will
be possible with storms that form near the instability axis Thursday
    afternoon and evening.

Thunderstorms will again be possible ahead of the trough on Friday,
from parts of the mid Mississippi Valley southwestward into the
Ark-La-Tex. Along this corridor, an isolated severe threat will be
possible with storms that develop near localized maximums of
instability. However, deep-layer shear is forecast to be relatively
weak, suggesting that any severe threat will remain marginal.

    ...Saturday/Day 6 and Monday/Day 8...
From Saturday to Monday, an upper-level trough is forecast to move
from the northern Plains into the Northeast. At the surface, a cold
front is forecast to advance southward from the Mid Mississippi and
lower Ohio Valleys to near the Gulf Coast. Scattered thunderstorms
will be possible each day ahead of the front, with the greatest
convective coverage in the Southeast. Deep-layer shear is expected
to remain relatively weak across the moist sector, which should
minimize the potential for severe storms.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Over the weekend, the pattern will consist of a large-scale trough

to move eastward through the flow. A cold front appears likely to
move from the mid Mississippi and lower Ohio Valleys southward to
near the Gulf Coast. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will be
possible each afternoon ahead of the front. Deep-layer shear is
expected to be too weak for a severe threat.

Early next week, mid-level flow is forecast to be west-northwesterly
over much of the nation. A relatively cool and dry airmass will be
in place over most of the continental U.S. The exception could be

A mid-level cyclonic flow pattern will be in place over the weekend
across the northeastern U.S., as multiple shortwave troughs move
through the larger-scale trough. A cold front will advance southward
to near the Gulf Coast. Thunderstorm development will be possible
along and near the front during the day on Saturday and Sunday, but
    no severe threat is expected.

During the upcoming early to mid week, mid-level flow is forecast to
become west-northwesterly across much of the U.S. A dry and
relatively cool airmass is forecast to be in place over the eastern
half of the nation. On the western edge of the high pressure area,
low-level moisture advection will be possible across the Great
Plains. Thunderstorm development may occur on Tuesday and Wednesday
in parts of the central Plains, as a cold front approaches. Although instability and deep-layer shear are not forecast to be sufficient

Early next week, a large-scale upper-level trough will move from the
Great Lakes region into the western Atlantic, as mid-level flow
become west-northwesterly over much of the nation. At the surface, a
large surface high will be dominant on Sunday and Monday from the
Mississippi Valley to the East Coast.

Further west into the Great Plains, a cold front is forecast to
advance southeastward through the Dakotas on Tuesday. Ahead of the
front, moisture advection is expected over the Great Plains. By
Tuesday afternoon, an axis of instability should be in place from
western Kansas into north-central Nebraska. Along and near the
instability axis, an isolated severe threat will be possible from
late afternoon into the evening. On Wednesday, the axis of
instability is forecast to shift southeastward into the mid Missouri
Valley. An isolated severe threat will again be possible near and
ahead of the front from late afternoon into the evening.

By Thursday, model forecasts move an upper-level trough into the
Great Lakes, as a subtle shortwave ridge moves through the central
U.S. A relatively dry and cool airmass over much of the U.S. is
expected to make thunderstorm development unlikely in most areas.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Severe storm potential from Monday/D4 to Friday/D8 is forecast to be
    minimal.

A deep upper trough will move across eastern Canada and the
northeastern USA Mon/D4 into Tue/D5, with a cold front already
offshore and high pressure building in from the west. Behind the
ejecting upper trough, moderate northwest flow aloft will persist
across the northern tier of states, with some trough amplification
possible over the Great Lakes Wed/D6 into Fri/D8. That said, a
minimally unstable air mass will exist over most of the CONUS, with
little severe thunderstorm potential. A few stronger storms cannot
be ruled out around Thu/D7 over the upper Midwest beneath the
northwest flow regime, but this low-predictability scenario will
depend heavily on enough moisture returning to the region. As such,
    no areas are currently forecast.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Severe weather potential is forecast to be low across the CONUS
    through the period.

Northwest flow aloft is forecast to persist from the northern
Rockies & Plains eastward into the northeastern states. Periodic
embedded waves and associated frontal intrusions will maintain a
relatively stable air mass across the same areas, while the more
substantial low-level moisture and instability remain largely over
the Gulf of America and western Atlantic Ocean.

Some low-end thunderstorm potential will be possible late Thur/D6
into Fri/D7 over the Upper Midwest, with primarily late day/evening
elevated thunderstorms possible as the large-scale trough over
eastern Canada starts to lift, and low-level warm advection occurs
    over the northern Plains.

    ...DISCUSSION...
For Wed/D4 through about Fri/D6, severe chances will be minimal
across the CONUS as a broad upper trough affects the Great Lakes
into the Northeast, with high pressure keeping the higher dewpoints
primarily offshore over the Gulf of America.

For late Fri/D6 into Sun/D8, predictability becomes low as models
indicate a possible tropical cyclone over parts of the southwestern
Gulf of America (NHC 30% change of cyclone formation). This, along
with a possible weak shortwave trough developing over TX/northern
Gulf Coast, could result in a rapid northward surge of tropical
moisture and enhanced shear. This area will be monitored in upcoming
    outlooks as the situation evolves.

    ...DISCUSSION...
Little severe weather threat is evident from Thur/D4 through Fri/D5,
as a broad upper trough over the Great Lakes and Northeast maintain
cool conditions, with high pressure over much of the eastern states
    preventing moisture return.

For late Sat/D6 into Sun/D7, conditional severe potential may
develop along the northern Gulf Coast, depending on the evolution of
a tropical disturbance currently over the southwest Gulf of America.
NHC currently denotes a 50% chance of cyclone development. A weak
midlevel trough is also forecast to develop over TX, and move across
the Gulf Coast states during the same time. The combination of
increasing moisture and shear could result in an area of tornado
potential. Any such event is highly conditional on cyclone
formation, and potential will continue to be monitored.

From Sun/D7 and beyond, models suggest a western trough may develop,
    though model spread is high.

    ...DISCUSSION...
A surface high will move from the OH Valley into the Northeast on
Fri/D4 as an upper trough lifts out of the region and temporary
upper ridging occurs. A stationary boundary is still forecast to be
along the northern Gulf Coast at this time, and a weak midlevel wave
will begin to form over TX. Meanwhile, a potential tropical cyclone
may develop toward the central Gulf of America.

Low-level winds will begin to veer to a southeasterly direction
along the Gulf Coast late Fri/D4 into Sat/D5, as the potential
tropical cyclone evolves. NHC currently gives a high probability of
this occurring. As such, an influx of rich moisture will develop out
of the south, with a substantial rain shield and embedded
thunderstorms likely along the northern Gulf Coast beginning Fri/D4
night. Initially, surface temperatures over land will remain cool
due to precipitation and initial modification of the surface ridge
    air mass.

At this time, it appears Sat/D5 is the most likely time for the more substantial low-level warming to occur, with tropical yet
sufficiently unstable profiles. Of particular note is how the
developing shortwave trough over TX interacts with the tropical low.
Some models indicate 40-45 kt midlevel winds, which would complement
the strong low-level shear and favor low-topped supercells with
tornado potential. The greatest threat area should be along the
coastal counties given expected poor low-level lapse rates farther
inland. Initial elevated convection may give way to an east-west
zone of supercells as the coastal baroclinic zone moves inland. Some
additional threat into Sun/D6 may exist as well.

For the period Mon/D7 into Tue/D8, models are now developing an
amplified upper trough over the western CONUS. Low-level moistening
will be most prominent later in the period, and could eventually
result in a zone of strong to severe storm potential, however,
predictability is quite low at this time.

    ...DISCUSSION...
For Sat/D4, the latest NHC guidance (as of this writing) has brought
the center track of the developing hurricane farther east toward
southern AL and the western FL Panhandle, and thus the Slight Risk
for tornado potential has been shunted east. Further, given the
likelihood of a stronger cyclone and faster forward motion, the
Slight Risk has also been expanded farther north/inland, as it
appears the mid 70s F dewpoints may expand across much of southern
AL. The strong low-level shear east of the center, and increasing
midlevel winds (as a shortwave trough deepens over the Lower MS
Valley) should support a few supercells with tornado potential. It
should be noted that the Slight Risk area may shift in subsequent
outlooks if the center track shifts.

For Sun/D5, the shortwave trough and remnants of the tropical
cyclone will generally move northeastward toward the Appalachians
and toward the Carolinas and southern Mid Atlantic. It is possible
that the upper system outruns the unstable warm sector, but at least
a low end chance of severe is not out of the question.

For the remainder of the period, there may be a chance of severe
storms over parts of the Southern Plains into Wed/D8 as a developing
western trough eventually moves across the Rockies, and low-level
moisture returns in earnest. However, the evolution of this trough
and date of wave ejection is low predictability.

    ...DISCUSSION...
On Sun/D4, a shortwave trough and surface low (previously associated
with the tropical cyclone) will move east across the TN/OH Valleys,
and toward the Mid Atlantic Sunday night. A warm front and northward
surge of moisture will occur from GA/Carolinas into VA/DelMarVa,
resulting in at least a few hundred J/kg MLCAPE. Substantial rain
and thunderstorms are likely to exist over the region, and therefore
boundary layer warming/destabilization is in question. Most models
show little if any daytime heating. As such, predictability is low
at this time, but at least low severe probabilities could be added
in later outlooks as the scenario evolves.

To the west, a shortwave trough with tropical remnants will affect
southern CA and AZ, with strong southwest winds aloft. Substantial
model differences exist regarding destabilization due to increasing
clouds and rain, though some severe wind and even hail potential
cannot be ruled out where instability is locally higher. This area
too may see at least low severe probabilities in later outlooks as predictability increases.

For the remainder of the period through Thu/D8, a potential western
trough ejection may occur into the Plains, with the strongest
instability on or after Wed/D7 as moisture return becomes more
established with upper 60s F dewpoints possible from TX into OK and
KS. As such, this area will also be monitored as the event nears,
and as trough timing becomes more predictable.

    ...DISCUSSION...
There is reasonably good agreement in 00Z deterministic and ensemble
guidance that a mid/upper-level low centered over the Sierra Nevada
or Great Basin on Day 4/Monday will evolve into an open wave while
progressing into the Great Plains on Day 6/Wednesday. Thereafter,
model spread increases in the evolution of the large-scale pattern.

    ...Day 4/Monday...

Some severe weather threat could materialize during the afternoon
along a surface boundary over the Upper Midwest where at least
modest instability will coincide with sufficiently strong deep-layer
shear to support organized storm modes. However, low-amplitude
ridging downstream from the western U.S. trough along with
uncertainty in the extent of air mass destabilization renders the
threat too questionable to include a 15% area.

    ...Day 5/Tuesday...

Increasing height falls and midlevel flow will overspread the
central and southern High Plains, which in turn will induce a
deepening lee cyclone, likely over southeast CO. At the surface, a
front is expected to stretch from the low through the OH Valley into
the Mid-Atlantic with a dryline trailing south from the cyclone into
eastern NM or western TX. Isolated strong to severe storms appear
possible along the length of the front from the Mid-Atlantic into
the central and southern Plains. Organized severe storm potential
appears most probable over the central and southern High Plains
Tuesday afternoon into evening in the vicinity of the lee cyclone
and strengthening low-level jet, where the strongest forcing for
ascent and vertical shear will coincide.

    ...Day 6/Wednesday...

As mentioned above, there is overall model agreement that a
short-wave trough and a strengthening deep-layer wind field will
advance into the Great Plains at this time. However, there are
slight timing and latitudinal differences in the track of the
midlevel system and the associated surface low. Despite these
differences, it does appear that a broad, moist, and unstable warm
sector will exist. As such, organized severe storms appear possible
with the highest confidence in occurrence over portions of eastern
KS into MO where guidance currently indicates the most favorable
overlap of instability and vertical shear. The currently delineated
area may move slightly and/or expand in the coming days as forecast
    confidence increases.

...Days 7 and 8/Thursday and Friday...

Some severe weather threat could develop over the Great Lakes and OH
Valley on Thursday in association with the mid-level trough
discussed in the previous sections. However, confidence in organized
severe storm potential is currently too low given the model
variability in the specific details of the trough and associated
    frontal system.
