• DDMsgReader - Indexed message reader mode

Hi,This is a feature request, and was touched on in discussions, but just formalising it here.It would be great if there was an Indexed message reader mode. When activated (e.g. a key from a Synchronet menu), it would display ALL message sub groups on a single (scrollable) page, grouped together by message group. This would be instead of having to 'click through' a message group first. It would also put all echoes with NEW messages at the top of each group, for easy identification.Screenshot attached. ![Screenshot_2022-02-27_at_18.35.57](https://gitlab.synchro.net/main/sbbs/uploads/df8270abe9a4ccc0c30eca3e9d814922/Screenshot_2022-02-27_at_18.35.57.png)

Would you want it to simply display this list? Or would you want the sub-boards to be selectable (i.e. to read them)? What is the screenshot taken from?

It's been awhile, but I'm pretty sure that's the native Mystic messaging menu. They're selectable.

There are two things that Mystic really does well... Message boards and editing, and the sysop config tool.

Yes, selectable - it's the first step in eventually 'drilling down' to the messages themselves. This is a screenshot from Mystic BBS (default installation).

This is a very nice feature of Mystic. Kind of a one-stop-shop for area jumping and message reading.

I'm wondering if this would be a better fit for my message area chooser rather than my message reader. Also I'm still not entirely sure what the "indexed" means in "indexed message reader mode".

I'm not sure why they call it that either. I also think it would be a better fit for your message area chooser since that is what it is essentially doing.

It's kind of a combination of reader, list, and area chooser all at once. It would be lovely, but it doesn't look like a small endeavor at all.

I haven't used Mystic much, but it sounds like this is a list of message areas with some stats, and it lets you choose one. I don't know what Mystic does next, but I was thinking this could potentially fit into my area chooser, as a separate format to display the message areas and allowing the user to choose one (and then the user could choose to read messages from the Synchronet menu).

I suppose I could also incorporate this into my message reader to go into read/list mode when the user chooses one.

I haven't used Mystic much, but it sounds like this is a list of message

It's probably worth seeing just so you know what the Issue is talking about. While Avon's board is heavily customized, looks like he left Mystic's "Index Message Reader" alone. It differs from the historical networks/areas/messages hierarchy tools.

    agency.bbs.nz
    telnet
    login with guest/guest
M from the main menu for messages
I from the message menu for Index Msg Reader

Tool uses ESC to go back versus our more common 'Q'.

Which own reader? Is "indexed message reader" a separate message reader and not built into Mystic?

It's built-in. The name is perhaps a little strange, but it's a standard feature which comes in any default Mystic installation.

No, it’s built-in, just kept separate. There’s the traditional message reading system, and the “index” system.

Just wanted to check in and see if any thought had been given to this idea. It would prevent the need to hop back and forth from the group list and the area list in your message area chooser.

A test version is available [here](http://www.digitaldistortionbbs.com:81/synchronet_stuff/ddmr_index_mode.zip). Back up your current DDMsgReader.js and dd_lightbar_menu.js. After unzipping, copy the DDMsgReader.js to the directory where you keep it, and copy the included dd_lightbar_menu.js to your sbbs/mods directory (and don't forgot to delete it there when you're done, as it's normally located in sbbs/exec/load).
