just about getting my head round this, No Amiga's for about 20 years but having fun with synchronet on one of the PCs in my radio shack. Must say I am really liking this software and very pleased that You have given the good ol' bbs world a new lease of life.

Just wondering if You have any BBS nodes/hubs that have packet radio access gateways? - might dig out an old TNC and have a bash at setting up a packet node as an experiment in the future if it wont cause a problem :-)

Your time an effort much appreciated.

I know some sysops have experimented with packet nodes using Synchronet, but I think the results have always been somewhat disappointing. I don't know of any running right now.

    Rob,

I know some sysops have experimented with packet nodes using
Synchronet, but I think the results have always been somewhat disappointing. I don't know of any running right now. --

At one time, because of Synchronet's DOSXTRN utility, I was
running the Amateur Radio Packet Door, originally done by the
    late Dave Perry (W4KGU)(SK).

All of his doors did not have a fossil driver, but required
a DORINFO1.DEF file to run. But, awhile back, a deal with the
comports in Windows made the TNC think that the node was in
use, but it was not. So, I took that door offline. I still have
the MFJ 1270C TNC that I used with it, but no rig or connector
    cable.

Of his other doors, the QRZ Callsign Search Door is no longer
updated with data files (QRZ quit doing that 5 1/2 years ago),
but I have "version 33" of that on the BBS for "nostalgia" (data
is from 2008). Yet, I have a separate door telling where folks
can get more current ham radio callsign data off the internet.

Other doors that he did were BULLET, where you could set up 26
categories for whatever topic you liked (ham radio or otherwise),
a door to track ones progress in the ARRL Worked All States
competition, and a door to search Part 97 of the FCC Rules, as they
pertain to amateur radio. For the latter, I had to download the PDF
version of it, then go through and set it for the ASCII and high
ASCII characters, plus formatting it to a regular BBS page, before
    I could put it online.

There is an old Tiny2 TNC lurking in one of those boxes of history in the attic. I think it might need a MAX chip as I have a foggy memory of pinching it from the Tiny2 for another project way back..

Not delved into fussing with Doors yet, so many things to do, so few hours in a day Hi Hi
Pretty sure Iam going to have a whole heap of fun with this BBS lark, always good to have something to firkle with when conditions are so sketchy on HF. -

All the best de Hairy Paul, an old (new) sysop in S.W.Scotland. :-P

I've got an MFJ 1270C TNC2, but no rig or connecting cable for it. My
packet is mainly via telnet to the NS2B BBS in Penfield, New Yor.

Not delved into fussing with Doors yet, so many things to do, so few
hours in a day Hi Hi

Sounds like too many nets, and too little time to check into them (hi hi).

Pretty sure Iam going to have a whole heap of fun with this BBS lark, always good to have something to firkle with when conditions are so sketchy on HF. -

I'm hoping with winter, the static crashes from thunderstorms will abate,
and that the HF bands will open up. Speaking of storms, I have some that
are heading this way, so I'll be shutting things down for the next 24 hours until things calm down. I saw reports of several tornadoes in Wisconsin
    Monday night (I'm in Arkansas).

I know this is an older question - but I just saw and thought I would chime in -there is a semi-new digital mode called VARA (specifically VARA-FM) that is much faster (particularly in WIDE mode) that is emerging as a kind of replacement mode for Packet that is mostly used for Winlink (which aside from APRS is the #1 use of AX.25 packet radio these days) - that would be very promising to run a Synchronet BBS with. That would take some work/coding though.

There are a few BPQ32 BBSs that run Packet and now VARA-FM around, but I'm not much of fan of BPQ32 as a user (it's purpose in life is for packet radio so it's very utilitarian) and although it's been a few years ago from a sysop point of view it's orders of magnitude the hardest BBS software to get going that I've ever encountered. But if someone *really* wants to go down that very lonely road of packet radio BBS, BPQ32 is the best answer currently.
