• Incoming calls

From Richard Vonzel@1:103/705 to All on Sun Jan 24 08:56:24 2021
I'm about to give up on running this system I cannot get it to accept incoming calls.
    Running Windows 10
Latest version of SSBS for Windows
Surfboard router with telnet inbound setup
Synchronet's terminal log shows no incoming telnet on port 23.
I've tried a diff port and still no luck.
I've turned off the windows firewall and no luck.
I even call comcast to see if there blocking it, and they said no.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

    Thanks
    Rick

Surfboard router with telnet inbound setup
Synchronet's terminal log shows no incoming telnet on port 23.

Can you access it from another device behind the router over the local LAN, ie 192.168.x.x address? I think that'd narrow down the culprits pretty well and give us somewhere to focus

Go into the command prompt and type netstat -an and let me know if you see port 23 listening. That's step one. Also, remember, your internal network is likely either a 10, 172, or 192 based RFC1918 private network. Any configuration you have for SBBS must be based upon the RFC1918 address. Your router must be configured to route port 23 external traffic to the RFC1918 address for your BBS.

For example, if my external address is 56.9.43.4 (made this one up) and my Windows 10 computer is 192.168.0.4, you'll need to configure the port routing to allow 56.9.43.4:23 to 192.168.0.4:23.

Let me know if you need any additional assistance.

You didn't setup port forwarding in your router?

ok, and assuming you've set up port forwarding to route port 23 to your windows computer, do you have that computer set up with a static ip? (ie if you retsart your pc and it has a new ip address, your router wont know where to direct port 23 requests)

I couldn't say just what is up there but it sounds like a port forwarding or firewall issue. If you keep at it I think you'll get to where you want to go.

My ISP doesn't block port 23 but the router answers on that port so I use an alternate port and that works for me.

You'll need to experiment and find a solution.

I've heard that Comcast blocks port 23. My recommendation is to create a port forward from external to internal on something like 2023 or 2323 to translate to 23. Try again.

Internally, does your BBS respond on port 23? From another computer in the house, go to a command prompt and test.

Try connecting from another computer on your lan... If it works that rules out synchronet and windows firewall.. Which would just leave the router and isp

Yes, port 23 works fine within my lan but not from the outside.

My router has a telnet server answering on port 23 and it just gives an error from outside the lan. I have disabled that server so it doesn't answer at all but it is effectively blocked now so port 23 doesn't work at all from the outside.

The only option is to use a non standard port with that router. I had to do the same with the ssh port for the same reasons.

At some point I'll get a new router and revisit all that.

I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. I'm glad you were able to identify the issue as being a router problem and changing to a non-standard port allows external users access to your BBS.

I am able to access as a localhost. Works great thay way.

That's not the same. Here is a possible path of the traffic...

    1. Internet origin
    2. ISP-supplied modem at your house does NAT/PAT to forward the address and port
    3. ISP-supplied modem firewalls/blocks the port
    4. You installed a router and/or wireless AP that does NAT/PAT like step #2
    5. You installed a router and/or wireless AP that does firewalling like step #3 5a. Your wireless AP is doing host isolation and doesn't let wireless clients talk to each other
    6. The server you've installed SBBS on has a host firewall that is blocking the port (this is default behavior on any desktop class OS, including Win10 and Ubuntu)

Accessing telnet localhost/<DEVICE NAME>/127.0.0.1 is inside of all those steps above. So to troubleshoot you need to work backwards.

    1. Works from Localhost?
    2. Works from another client on the same network?
    3. If both of those work then you need to start checking into routing and firewalling
