This may just be me and having the ftp and file areas configured wrong but:

    1) I cannot upload any files via an ftp client.
    2) I can upload through file menu as sysop
    3) I cannot login with my sysop username and system password (not user password)

** I read in the wiki that login like that will login with sysop permissions. It just says invalid password.

    4) I can login via ftp client as sysop user and regular user password, but cannot upload anyhting. I have made sure upload permissions are set correctly (even went as far as putting no requirements) and set permissions in Linux as 777 on the actual directories.

    Any thoughts?

What directory are you trying to upload to? What user did you login to the FTP with? What does the FTP server log report as the problem?

You don't need the system password to login (as the sysop) to the FTP server, just your regular user password. You only need the system password (in addition to your regular user password) if you plan to mount/access the local file system directly and in that case, you would send the FTP password as "pass:syspass" where "pass" is your user password, followed by a colon, and then "syspass" is the system password - all without the quotes.

    4) I can login via ftp client as sysop user and regular user password, but cannot upload anyhting. I have made sure upload permissions are set correctly (even went as far as putting no requirements) and set permissions in Linux as 777 on the actual directories.

The FTP server log will tell you why it is rejecting uploads.

Where is the ftp server log by default?

What directory are you trying to upload to? What user did you login to the FTP with? What does the FTP server log report as the problem?

Here is the error from the sbbs.log:

    Jan 21 12:16:37 Debian9 synchronet: web 0055 Sending file: /opt/sbbs/temp/SBBS_SSJS.418.55.html (0 bytes)
Jan 21 12:16:39 Debian9 synchronet: ftp 0068 <Ayex> file (/uploads/SYSOPPRI/traderbay.src) not in database for MDTM command
    Jan 21 12:16:41 Debian9 synchronet: ftp 0068 <Ayex> uploading: traderbay.src to /uploads/SYSOPPRI/ (/opt/sbbs/files/uploads/sysop_private/) in active mode
    Jan 21 12:16:41 Debian9 synchronet: ftp 0068 <Ayex> !DATA ERROR 13 (Permission denied) line 970 opening /opt/sbbs/files/uploads/sysop_private/traderbay.src

I did get it to finally work, but I had to change the linux permissions to 777 for the directory. It finally uploaded. I am running the sbbs as root (plan to change that in future) but the permissions are killing me.

Do you have to have linux directory permissions at 777 for uploads to work?

The user you are running sbbs as will need read and write permissions to the directory in order to upload to it. "777" means you are giving *everyone* read, write, and execution permissions to a file or directory.

I was running it as root. So, that’s why I’m confused as to why it didn’t work before changing to 777.
