• Becoming a HUB/BOSS

From Gary McCulloch@1:154/50 to All on Tue Apr 21 08:18:28 2020
I am interested in setting up and leaning the backside of networking. I would like to dedicate a Windows 10 tower and my cable connection to be a HUB
for networks. What I am looking for is advise on what software I should use. I would like to learn how to hatch weekly nopelists, activate new accounts fast, compile nodelists and keep the networks flowing. Where should I start?

First, don't ask this in an echomail area dedicated to development! ;)

I don't know of any areas dedicated to the technical aspects of a Hub system, so probably 1 of the sysop areas (FN_SYSOP) is a good starting point...

    Bye, Wilfred.

If you're talking about FTN networking, try BBS_CARNIVAL. Several BBS
software authors hang out there as do a few tosser authors. This subject
would be on-topic in there. I know since I'm the echo moderator. :D That
echo is for anything that is BBS-related that doesn't specifically have
another echo dedicated to the subject at hand.

I could also help you since I taught myself from scratch how to set up a FTN network years ago (I run Micronet). It's not hard to be a hub but you need
to learn how the basics work. I can recommend some documentation that can
help with your understanding of the subject.

    Later,
    Sean

... If at first you don't succeed, try something else.

I am asking help to develop a network on my system. Of all the echos, this one best fits.

this area is more working out interoperability situations (NET) and developing (DEV) FTN protocols, creating and discussing FTSC proposals and documents, and similar developmental aspects of FTN network development...

Hits more than just SysOps. In that case, maybe the geneal chat echo
    may help.

perhaps this will help? i haven't posted it in a while for various reasons...

Posting Frequency: 1st of the month.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The objectives of the NET_DEV echo are:

    A. To facilitate discussion between developers and interested persons
concerning existing standards and methods of processing FTN related
    network data.

    B. To facilitate the development of new standards to be presented to
the FTSC. Standards proposals may be posted for feedback from
    conference members.

    C. To facilitate the discussion of implementations of FTN related
network technology and the interactions of software utilizing
    the technology and data.

The rules of the NET_DEV echo are:

    1. No ads (advertisments) or flaming.

    2. No profanity.

    3. Stay on-topic as much as possible.

    4. English is the official language allowed in this echo. However,
a message in your native tongue is allowed as long as there is
an English translation in the same message. If you must, at least
use google translate or similar to provide the English translation.

    5. Be kind to others - they'll be kind to you.

    6. Please let the moderator do his job.

    No it doesn't.

All hubs are run by sysops... So a sysop area might be a bit more generic, but I think it's your best fit.

Have a look at the VirtualBox package. You can create a private network and experiment. Do it well so it won't affect anyone in the outside (FTN) world.

    Cheers,
    Paul.
