One lady went to a Taco Bell, and wanted only "minimal" (a light

    LOL.
I was going around to various gas stations trying to find a national

I stopped in one place and this 20 something kid at the register (the

I miss those days when gas stations on every corner gave them away.

With my salads, they have iceberg lettuce (obviously), tomatoes,
cucumbers, hard boiled eggs, pickle spears, celery sticks, onions, ham, chicken, or turkey (especially nuggets), and either Thousand Island or
    French Dressing.

My salads usually only have lettuce, onions, peppers, jalapeÿo peppers
and bacon bits, with Ranch. Sometimes the above minus bacon bits with
    Italian.
Once in a while I'll have tomatoes but home grown. Those in the store
have no real taste to me.
When I worked in produce I ate of fruits and veggies. If we found
something with a blemish (no matter how small) those were sit aside and I
would take home a small bag of stuff on a regular basis. A slight
bruise, something that could be cut away, etc but we couldn't sell.
I hate to waste anything. I was brought up on: use it up/wear it
    out/make it do/or do without.

Excuse me...I need to go get some napkins to deal with all the
drooling now...the keyboard is getting rather messy. :P

Just don't spill a plate of spaghetti into it like I did once. :)

I don't recall Burger King having salad bars (but then they weren't regular customers of ours) but Wendy's did for a while, then it disappeared.

For a while, it was the "thing to do".... Keeping up a salad bar can be a
lot of work for a fast food place, though.... and probably wasn't as
    profitable as they'd hoped.....

I was going around to various gas stations trying to find a
national map with state maps included recently.
I stopped in one place and this 20 something kid at the register
(the only employee I saw) had no idea what a paper map was... ==sigh==

All he knew was the GPS and phone-Google maps, no doubt....

I miss those days when gas stations on every corner gave them away.

So do I.... Next best thing, though, is a AAA membership, where one can
get as many maps (real folded printed paper maps) as one needs or
wants.... for free, as part of your membership.... That and the TripTiks
pretty much pay for my membership... and the road service stuff is
    almost just gravy... :)

My salads usually only have lettuce, onions, peppers, jalape o
peppers and bacon bits, with Ranch. Sometimes the above minus bacon
    bits with Italian.
Once in a while I'll have tomatoes but home grown. Those in the
store have no real taste to me.

Our store has some specialty tomatoes that have some decent taste to
them.... but I don't buy them all that often... Do you grow your own on
    your windowsill....?

When I worked in produce I ate of fruits and veggies. If we found something with a blemish (no matter how small) those were sit aside
and I would take home a small bag of stuff on a regular basis. A
slight bruise, something that could be cut away, etc but we couldn't
sell. I hate to waste anything.

A definite bonus of working there, for sure.... :) And that would spoil
you for having to buy them at the store... especially as nowadays,
what's there to buy is blemished somewhat like as not.... :)

I was brought up on: use it up/wear it out/make it do/or do without.

As was I, although more by doing than by precept... :)

    Joe,

I don't recall Burger King having salad bars (but then they weren't
regular customers of ours) but Wendy's did for a while, then it JM>disappeared.

I worked for them from 1979 to 1984...they shared the same fate as
Wendy's -- they didn't last long...as it was too labor intensive to
maintain. But, they started the salad bars, then salads, with the
    "health conscious craze".

Yet, these idiots that sue the restaurant for causing their obesity
have no one but themselves to blame. No one is holding a gun to your
head to order and eat 6 small cheeseburgers in a meal (I have a time
with 4 from Burger King, with 2 orders of the 10 piece nuggets...but
that will last me the rest of the day). When I visited the Nashville,
Tennessee area in recent years, my aunt and uncle would take me to an
area White Castle...6 of those "gut grenades", with fries and a drink,
were more than enough for me.

One lady went to a Taco Bell, and wanted only "minimal" (a light
amount of) lettuce on her taco. The employee said "Sorry...we only JM>serve iceberg lettuce". :P

    LOL.

Sounds like a bit of employee re-training is in order. <G>

In a word, wow. :P Didn't they ever sell those in machines, or just
give them away?? I don't know what the status is in Arkansas, but I
think the rest areas, and the welcome centers, have them available, from
the Arkansas Highway And Transportation Department.

They also have a neat website (and app) called "I Drive Arkansas" (the
site is www.idrivearkansas.com). You get road conditions, traffic flow, construction zones, road closures, weather conditions, and much more.
It's helpful to know if there's a traffic backup, and advises you of
alternate routes, if applicable. You can also click on adjacent state
logos for similar items in those states.

I miss those days when gas stations on every corner gave them away.

And, you didn't have to worry about the restrooms being locked,
because they were being used as "love nests", or for drug users.

My salads usually only have lettuce, onions, peppers, jalapeÿo peppers
and bacon bits, with Ranch. Sometimes the above minus bacon bits with JM>Italian.

You can have the peppers and spicy stuff. :P

Once in a while I'll have tomatoes but home grown. Those in the store
have no real taste to me.

I love the chilled tomatoes, with a bit of salt on them...just like
for a slab of chilled watermelon (not fond of the seeds, though). Yet, I
    saw a picture on Facebook, offering for purchase "Boneless Watermelon";
but it was still quite pricey "without the bone". <G>

When I worked in produce I ate of fruits and veggies. If we found
something with a blemish (no matter how small) those were sit aside and I JM>would take home a small bag of stuff on a regular basis. A slight JM>bruise, something that could be cut away, etc but we couldn't sell.

So much for TANSTAFFL...sorry, Robert Heinlein. <BG>

I hate to waste anything. I was brought up on: use it up/wear it
    out/make it do/or do without.

Exactly...my late father and my Mom (both who grew up during The Great Depression) felt the same way.

Just don't spill a plate of spaghetti into it like I did once. :)

That's what keyboard covers are for, Joe!! <BG> But, the reason I have keyboard covers, is that my typing is "so strong" that I've made the
letters on the keys disappear. I became a touch typist by being a BBS
Sysop for nearly 30 years now...I never had a typing course in my life.

Yet, SPOCK (the Society For The Prevention of Overt Cruelty to
Keyboards) has me on their 10 Most Wanted List. <BG>

I have never understood the thinking behind food workers and rubber
gloves. They put the gloves on and then do all sorts of while wearing
    them.
Are the gloves to "protect" the customer from the server or the server
    from the food? :)

    Totally agree.

Never heard of boneless watermelons but have had seedless ones.
Reminds me of when unleaded gas came out which cost more than leaded.
The reasoning being they had to take the lead out.
But lead is not in gas of itself, it was added.
I always thought they must of made the gas, put in the lead, then took
    it out.

I wonder the same about the nurses in the hospital.

There are some seedless ones, and there was a name for that, but it
escapes me right now. It was smaller than the regular watermelon, but I
think it was circular like a cantaloupe.

Originally, there was a sign on the gas pumps:

That's the one I had. It was on sale and the first one I brought in
    years.
When I worked in produce I would wrestle around with 100s of those
things every week and rather turned me off watermelon. :)
The same with cole slaw, after lugging around 50 pound bags of cabbages
    all day, etc.

Isn't there a special name for them??

In southwest Arkansas, in the community of Hope (a stop for Amtrak's
Texas Eagle), every August, they have a big watermelon festival. I heard
one year, one melon was a record setting 275 pounds. Needless to say,
there was plenty of it to eat at the festival...and likely seed spitting contests as well. :P

The same with cole slaw, after lugging around 50 pound bags of cabbages

The only cole slaw I really like is the one from Kentucky Fried
    Chicken.
