Or, in the mountain of food, there is a tiny hole in the center of it, showing the bottom of the dish...and the cat complains you're starving
    it to death.

They would waddle away from their bowls then come to where I eating and
beg for what I had. I'd give them a taste and get a look as if to say "How dare you eat something I don't like?" and walk away. :)

Reminds me of the old "Mad Magazine" cartoon, called "The Minute
After". You see the dog going for this so called brand of new and
improved food...but a minute after the cameras are off, the dog opens up
the icebox, and pulls out a steak. <G>

So, obviously, with cats testing the new and improved tasting stuff, one
has to be more subtle, and if they go back and gobble it up, then it passes.... but if they totally ignore it, then it would fail... :)

I have read many times that pet food is made to sound good to the owners. "Oh, it has a mix of this and that. Fido/Fluffy would like that" when Fido/Fluffy could probably care less.
Animals, like humans, do prefer some foods over others though.
It just takes a while sometimes to figure out if they like this over
    that.
It took me a while to figure what my girls would/would not eat.

I've read where dogs/cats wouldn't be fed for a period of time so they
were hungry and would eat anything while the the ad was shot. Esp. if a live commercial.
I seem to recall seeing a clip of a live dog food commercial were Ed
McMahon is praising how good it was, dogs loved it, etc and a dog was trotted out who refused to eat any of it. The audience was howling, Ed was
embarrassed and the dog didn't care.

We don't actually get all that much commercial pet food... The cats get
dry kibble (some variety of Dad's, either Special or Gourmet), with
plenty of fresh water... both available all the time... And then we
share nibbles or smears of things we might be eating that are fine for
them and that they are interested in, like cheese, cream cheese, a cap
of milk, bits of chicken or pork or beef or other such meats, creamtop
yoghurt, ice cream, muffins, etc and so forth... We've had cats that
loved tomato sauce in/with anything, or various veggies like spinach (especially if with cheese, like off a pizza).... and others that didn't
like those things but did like other oddities... :)

One just offers, and pays attention to what gets accepted... ;) Richard usually puts it into the cat's fur, to be licked out... calls it "fur
candy"... If it's liked, the cat comes back for more.... if not, it
gets cleaned out of the fur and the cat stalks off... <G>

The only dry food my girls liked was Meow Mix. They would gobble that
up. Anything else was left in the bowl.
Went through a lot of other brands (they were given away) before I found
    one they liked.

Molly, my little tabby (she was the runt of the litter) loved horseradish
    of all things!
I would make a roast with the meat covered in four ounces on each side.
Whenever I had that she would beg until she got a piece then lick the horseradish off and beg for me.
One time I gave a pinch of it I scrapped off my part and she gobbled
    that up.
Never saw a cat like horseradish before.
Blanche, my large black and white (picture Sylvester) would run away
    from it. :)
Molly also loved baked ham. As it was cooking she would sit in front of
the oven door sniffing the air and start begging.
If sliced or whatever, (either packed or deli sliced) she could care less about it.

    Yep.

That's pretty much how we settled on the Dad's for our cats.... After
the first set of cats had found the one that they liked, that's what was
the standard thereafter... Cats that joined the family were expected to
just settle for what was given, but always seemed happy enough with the proffered Dad's anyway... :)

And then we share nibbles or smears of things we might be eating that

That was how Kaleo was with tomato sauce and chili spices.. he'd even
eat beans if they were covered in chili sauce... and the spicier, the
better... :) And one of our cats, I forget which now, liked pepper jack cheese... so much so that I tried to discourage him/her by putting down
just the hot pepper from it, and THAT was gobbled up, too... :)

Blanche, my large black and white (picture Sylvester) would run
    away from it. :)

The two we have now, Shadow (almost all black) likes spicy things and
will lap them up greedily... her sister Spook (tuxedo) takes one sniff
and runs away... Although, they both like Italian sausage...

Molly also loved baked ham. As it was cooking she would sit in

A cat with discriminating taste... ;)

    Yep.

We've found that beef in gravy, and almost any type of pork, are
    distinct favorites... ;)

    Never thought of that. :)

One of our kitties, Stardust aka Little Bit, came to us as an older
kitten... she was an consummate groomer... and early on, approached
Richard as he was eating something she found enticing, and he swears she
made it clear that she'd like a sample in her fur.... so he obliged...
She groomed it out, and came back for more... The older cats we had at
the time weren't all that into grooming themselves, but when they got
the fur candy, did groom it out too... and also would come back for
more... so now that's one of the principal ways of giving out cat
tidbits... ;) Works well for sauces, bits of meat/cheese, anything a
    little sticky/saucy....

... "Give me some more cheese, and I'll tell you," said Tom craftily.
