I told them there would be times like that and there would be busy
days and slow days and used a sort of chart with ups and downs,
which is normal. I became concerned it was a steady decline over several days.
A decline in work, or a decline in workers...? It makes sense that
some days would be busier than others.... :)

    Decline in work.
When I started in parking in January, '02, we had four people.
Three from 8-4 and one from 1100 to 1900. That was one too many so it
was dropped to three, which was great, two day and one afternoon shift. Kept everyone busy.
Then it dropped to only two and that's not enough to adequately
cover the campus. One worked 8-4 and one 11-7, so two people were in
    the field from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

So partly a decline in work, and partly a decline in how many hours is
supposed to cover adequately....? I can see where the overlapping 2
morning, one afternoon would work out nicely usually... And then special
events would mandate an extra shift, I'd guess...?

Then the pay garage opened and hours
changed from 8-4 to 7-3 since the morning person had to sweep the five story garage each morning for over night parkers. (Over night parking
not allowed, the garage was literally closed, gates down, etc). Now
that is no longer done but the guy still starts at 7 but can't ticket until 8, so an hour to sit and do nothing.

Did they decide to allow overnight parking in the garage, then...?

asked "Did you work all those hours?" I replied, "Well, I was
here" and she said "Close enough". :)
Some jobs, presence is a large part of the job.... <G>

There were many times people wanted to do something they shouldn't
and attempt it until they saw me (or one of the other guys) and turned around and left. :)

Deterrence is a useful part of the job... Better to stop something from happening altogether than to have to actively have to step in... :)

Depends on the event, time of day, etc.
Usually we were just pulled from ticketing to traffic control, which
was part of the job as well.
I enjoyed traffic control as a rule, if the weather were nice. :)
There would be various job fairs and such a couple of times a year
with vendors hiring for summer jobs or soon to be grads. These people
always had goodies to give away and in thanks for helping them I would
get pens, bite size candies, etc. For a couple of years various
companies were giving away thumb drives and I got a pile of them I still
    use on a regular basis.
I would get a pen from this or that vendor then take the collection to
the office where the queen bee got first pick and on down the ladder and whatever was left over was in a common pile. (If there was one that
really caught my eye somehow it ended up in my pocket instead.)
The vendors wanted to get rid of their goodies so they didn't have to
take it back to their business.
One year I got like six pounds of Starbucks coffee. Their coffee on
campus was as bitter as all get out, but when I made it at home it was
    fine.

We had people who claimed they lost their time ticket (or never got
one, which was impossible since one had to get a ticket before the gate
would go up and someone was in the booth right beside them in case of problems). Now if they claim they lost their ticket they charged a
minimum of $10 to get out. They are charged the regular rate (only 50
cents an hour) for the time they were in there.

Well, of course... ;) Nasty weather's no fun....

Were they emblazoned with the company name....? ;)

After all, they /were/ given to you.... :)

The vendors wanted to get rid of their goodies so they didn't have

    Makes perfect sense... :)

One year I got like six pounds of Starbucks coffee. Their coffee on campus was as bitter as all get out, but when I made it at home it was fine.

I suppose that when it was made on campus, it wasn't being made quite as
it should have been done.... or, perhaps, as one might do, to make
    things less bitter....

So that would be $12 for 24 hours.... ;) Of course, probably they'd not
been there that long.... If they hear that that charge for lost ticket
is a minimum of $10, does the ticket miraculously appear....? ;)
