It is. You just want to not get too far off the beaten path there. Some of those "pulpwood" roads can get you lost real quick.

That happened to me once in a while, which I considered "unexpected side trips" since I never get lost. :)
There are several reasons I like the old roads over interstates.
You see more of the country, I don't like driving fast, and if you miss
an exit you can just turn around and go back, not travel 20 miles to the next exit and turn around. Those are only a few of the reasons.
As Charles Kuwalt said "with interstates you can travel across the
country and see absolutely nothing" (or words to that effect).

    Joe,

The rental I drove had GPS and it would send me on very circuitous
    routes.

Or the cartoon where the GPS says "turn left here", and you go off the
side of the mountain if you do so. :P

I also quickly learned to never ask anyone under 30 for directions. They
can't give directions to the corner without looking at their phones.

I'd call AAA for trip planning if I was driving. But, with Amtrak
doing the driving for my trip in July, I'm not worried about that.

I take short cuts as often as possible.
Sometimes when I travel I'll find a street that goes from point A to
point B without having to go around to Point G.
I enjoy driving along residential streets since while it may be slower
its takes just as long as the long way around.

You don't happen to drive a plain, white, non-descript van, do you? Haha, just kidding. No... really?
I try to stay away from residential. Of course, nowdays no kids to run out in front of you. Went to my daughter in laws for Chrismtas. At around 10:30-11:00 am. Not a kid in sight. no footballs, basketballs or bikes.

Don't get me started on using those things.
The rental I drove had GPS and it would send me on very circuitous

The rental I used in September had a GPS, and just for the jollies, we
turned it on... someone before it had messed with the settings, so when
we were on the Beltway, it kept telling us to get off at the next exit,
so it could route us through Washington DC... We just ignored it and
kept on our planned pathway.... My rider checked it out later, and
turned out that it was programed to avoid ALL limited access roads...
there are some times that one really doesn't want to do the city
    streets.... <G>

I also quickly learned to never ask anyone under 30 for directions.

Yeah... I found that out on a different trip... I'd thought I'd missed a
turn, but as it turned out, I'd gone barely not quite far enough... but
I'd turned around and went back into the little hamlet I'd started
from... turned into a driveway that had a slim chance of being where I
thought I was going, and a youngish man came out to see who the stranger
was... I told him where I was trying to go, and he wasn't sure where
that was, so pulled out his phone.... At least I got a somewhat map to
picture where I needed to go, and did finally find my destination....
and spent a pleasant afternoon with an old friend... :)

One time in the mid '70s I was in DC for a wedding.
It was late at night and I missed my exit so I drove on to the next one.
I was intending to just turn around and back on the beltway.
But, this exit went directly to another road that was four lane with a
wide tree lined median and no way to turn. There was fencing between the trees.
I kept going thinking there had to be somewhere to turn and finally came
to the end of the road, that was at the entrance to the CIA HQ! I just made
a turn around, waving at the armed Marine guard and went back to the
    beltway.
