A lot of those various student fees are for things the person may never
use, or rarely. They are charged if one uses them or not.
A few years ago there was a fee for hard copies of a "free" daily New
York Times, which was only available in one place on campus, and the days before were tossed with each new issue. (Of course to me the best thing to do with the NYT is toss it out anyway
There are some off campus book stores, but some of the used books are
so marked up, that verifies "you get what you pay for". :P
There used to be several around campus, but I think, don't quote me, they
are all gone now.

No doubt.
And then getting pennies back on the dollar when selling the books later
since whatever book one bought wasn't being used the next semester.
A new edition every semester...that's ridiculous.
And a lot of things don't change.
