I got the computer working again (darn legacy mode got turned OFF in
the Command Prompt window...likely from a Microsoft update).

Saturday morning I got a notice of a Windows up "right now". I
stopped what I was doing figuring it would only take a few minutes as
    they usually do.
It took over two and half hours!
    Then the pc went nuts.
In no particular order the start menu didn't work, the search bar disappeared and when it came it back didn't work. All my desktop
programs were moved around and the icons changed.
It took 10 minutes (I timed it) from restart to being able do
anything and had a black screen.
    Some programs wouldn't run.
I had all sorts of problems and not very happy.
I figured I would have to take it to the shop and managed to copy to
a thumb what I couldn't replace to use with the laptop.
Later it started working properly and back to normal.

Apparently there were some issues with that update... a friend of mine
had a similar experience... finally she was able to get things to work again.... I am SO glad not to have to deal with that sort of stuff on
    my computer.... :)
