in a very generic over view sort of way. E.g. what is a telegram gate? How does this fit into Fidonet?

It's like BBS, allows you to read and write in Fido Echoconferences, but the Telegram application is used for access.
It also makes it possible to broadcast Telegram groups or channels in the read-write mode to Fido.
Also, with some restrictions, the gate allows you to exchange private messages between Telegram users and sysops of the Fido network.

Thanks for the link. It does explain a lot for me. It also let me know
enough to know that it is not for me. To start with, it sounds like it
needs a mobile phone which I don't have (yea -- old fogy) and/or SMS
messaging. I don't quite see how it is relevant to fidonet, but that is
ok.
