But I know Michiel sometimes (as I do sometimes) uses "reply to" a temporary netmail directory, to be able to finish the reply at a later time. When I do that here, I get the same effect with the default INTERNETREPLY setting...

Me too (I just tested).
A workaround could be using a local echomail area/directory for those draft
messages.
