Looking at California websites it looks like some blackouts are underway in Northern California but I am not sure why. Risk of wildfire? These blackouts are not the answer to risk of wildfire as far as I can see. First responders commented that the power outages impead their ability to respond to any emergencies and cause certain problems for those in the affected areas when there is no emergency.

I hope all of you come out of this quickly.

yes... power in the wires heats them... add in hot air and they sag even more... throw in some strong winds and you get live wires breaking and starting fires...

PG&E was culpable in at least 1 fire in 2016, and as a public company
they've been deferring maintenance in order to maximize shareholder profits
    - and now they have an unsafe network and the consumer is left paying in
    lost income/spoiled food/etc.

realitycheckBBS was down for about 15 hours - all of the advisories blamed
RED FLAG (their emphasis, not mine) conditions - high wind, low humidity,
    high temperature.

Here along the coast, where thousands were out of power, it was 75 degrees, 55% humidity, and a 3-5 mph breeze keeping things nice.

So PG&E Is going to deliver the power the people need, if the weather is nice?

Seems they aren't going to deliver if the weather is nice either.

Seems there is a problem there. This company should be held culpable for this stupidity, and the costs the people there have had to pay for it.

They're in bankrupcy over the damages paid for the fires in 2016-2017, so they'll pass those costs onto the rate payers. They've lost their claim to manage their own restructuring, so other groups can come in with re-org
    plans. Queue the retention/transition bonuses!

The news broke that PG&E execs wined and dined 30 large customers over two nights at Silver Oak winery in Napa; when the news broke the CEO (laughably wearing a service vest over his dress shirt and tie) admitted that the event could have come off as "tone-deaf", but it had already been booked.

My fire insurance premium went from $550 to $950 when I inquired why
they said because of the fires to which I said wtf are you charging me
I didn't file a claim charge the people responsible for starting it and

We had no wind and they gave excuses that there were 70 - 80 mph gusts over the ridges. That would have to be the High Sierras! It took 3 days to get power back on and then 2 to stabilize it. We kept getting surges all day Saturday and into Sunday. Finally yesterday afternoon it seemed to straighten out. Several
    f

said during this type of outage they are not liable for losses.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the bankrupcy proceedings. Given their record of late (second bankrupcy due to short-sighted electricity contracts after funneling billions to their parent company in the 2000s, blowing up neighborhoods and killing their customers with ill-maintained gas lines, burning down entire towns due to ill-maintained power lines, all
while keeping a steadily increasing stock price and value to their shareholders (at least until 2017, that is...)

San Jose has proposed a customer-owned model. I'm sure PG&E will refuse, but not sure how long they'll have a say - especially when productivity losses continue to mount up.

I'm going to go long on my investments in ice manufacturing and generator sales.
