• Another HPT Question

    From Dan Richter@1:317/3 to All on Sat Jul 20 02:37:20 2019
    Hi All,

    You have all be so helpful, I thought I'd give you another question. :)

    Is it possible, with HPT, to forward incoming netmail messages to another
    user name? For example, I just had some netmail come into my system addressed to 'Sysop', that I can't view from within my BBS. If HPT had a way to forward incoming messages addressed to 'Sysop' to 'Dan Richter' it would be great.

    I've looked through the documentation on the github wiki, and wasn't able to find anything about forwarding netmail messages. It's possible I missed it though... :)

    Thanks in advance.

    a netmail message? you could maybe use a netmail tracker to rewrite the message to your name before it is imported into the BBS... not sure but i think there is something for that in the husky tools but if not, maybe look into RNTrack... i have it here but have not yet played with it... i need similar to bounce and/or readdress netmails that arrive here... netmgr (from the timed author) is one similar tool we used on DOS and OS/2...

    ; If you want to remap netmail from one user name to another or from one
    ; system to another, you can define up to 50 remapped names below using the
    ; format <orig>;<new> The new portion can optionally contain @net_address

    ; Names are case insensitive. Each line is processed in the order in which
    ; they appear meaning a single message can be processed by many lines. This
    ; means for example you can map multiple names to "Sysop" and then on the last
    ; line map "Sysop" to something else. If the "New" portion of the definition
    ; contains @<address> then the Netmail will be forwarded to another address
    ; entirely. Forwarding even works for automated To fields like Areafix, so if
    ; you are a hub and someone accidentally Areafix your BBS you can have your BBS
    ; forward that Netmail to your hub system so it can be processed properly.

    What should /371 do if it receives a mail for /300 ?

    Routing changes which way mails go, but it does not change the destination aka.

    Routing is not forwarding.

    Carbon Copy works with netmail messages and it just copy the message from a netmail base to another netmail base, you can't cange the to: address nor the destination name and the status of the message (received) so you can't copy an incoming netmail and send the copy of the message to another destination.

    I tried a variation of this, with the following at the bottom of my fidoconfig file, basically after all things have been defined for Netmail, echomail areas.

    CarbonFromArea Netmail # This is the name of my Primary NetMailArea
    CarbonRule AND
    CarbonTo Eric Renfro
    CarbonExtern /bbs/bin/mail-netmail

    It never executes the external to figure out how I can potentially pipe that mail into an email.

    Course I'd also like to be able to forward the netmail, if I could, but I don't think CarbonCopy can forward.

    Hmmm... I have RNTrack compiled and packaged for my HUB server now, got it installed and ready to.... Try to figure it out.
    However, it's ironic you mention that about JAM message bases because my HUB primarily uses JAM message bases. I actually added a secondary NetmailArea that was *.msg for the use of MakeNL, heh heh.

    If you have ideas on how I'd do this with RNTrack, I'm all ears. I don't even have much of a starting place and the tool looks.... Quite complicated and daunting when first looking at it, unlike Husky Tools in general was, which I got into it pretty quickly. I might, once I get footing in, get on RNTrack when I have a baseline to start with, and an understanding of how that baseline actually works.

    Easiest way is to create a secondary netmail area and use CarbonCopy to copy everything over, make the secondary area a *.msg base then use that base for RNTrack.

    You could also do everything that RNTrack does with hpt's filter.pl. I am currently writing loop, dupe and ping subs in perl and as soon as I am comfortable with them I will be dropping RNTrack.

    am currently writing loop, dupe and ping subs in perl and as soon as I
    am comfortable with them I will be dropping RNTrack.

    This is really confortable because I found that RNTrack has troubles with JAM msg bases (This is why my primary netmail base is still in squish format).
    So do you think is possibile to replace RNTrack functions with perl filters?

    Do you think to share your scripsts? ;)

    Ciao!

    Yes it does. I was in contact with the author who said it is pretty much useless with JAM bases until he updates smapi.

    Gladly. There are already a lot of examples in the HPT src. When I am comfortable and have tested it, I will send it to whoever wants it.

    Hmmm... Yeah, my PING method uses a perl script, actually. ;)

    I actually had found an existing PING handler script and hptfilter that uses it.

    Looks like, if I were to do something like that for netmail to forward it on from 1:135/300 if sent to Eric Renfro, Sysop, etc, I would use a filter sub, after my &pong, and just check $toaddr and $toname and if $toarea is undefined. Hmmm

    I emailed both code maintainers about RNTrack crashing when using JAM bases
    and here is the response I received from Michael Dukelsky, one of the authors:

    -- begin copy --

    The problem is in the buggy version of the SMAPI library, because of which one essentially cannot use the JAM format. I've been going to replace the library with the version used in HPT for a long time, but unfortunately I don't have time now for this voluminous work. Sorry.

    Until I change the library please use MSG format for netmail.

    Michael

    would use a filter sub, after my &pong, and just check $toaddr and
    $toname and if $toarea is undefined. Hmmm

    $toarea would be your netmail area.

    I've seen script examples that checks !defined($toarea), and send it over to the netmail function, else, send it to the echomail function.

    That said, I tried a few things so far to forward netmail sent TO 1:135/300 and TO Eric Renfro, to forward it on to 1:135/371. The result I got from that from the logs is:

    6 03:05:46 PerlFilter: NetMail from Eric Renfro 1:135/371 to Eric Renfro 1:135/371: 1
    J 03:05:46 Badmail reason: Rejected by perl filter (AREA: no areatag)

    The script lines in sub filter were:

    if (!defined $toarea && $toaddr eq "1:135/300" && $toname eq "Eric Renfro" {
    $toaddr = "1:135/371";
    $area = "NETMAIL";
    $change = 1;
    }

    (I'm about to test that again with a $toarea instead of $area, to see if that was the issue, but I tried many things).

    A secondary option, but I haven't yet actually gotten to it yet, was to have a post() function that can essentially re-post a new message with the same contents, as I'd seen in vtrack examples. I'd just have to include some perlmodule to provide said post() function to do that, probably rip it from the vtrack script examples. ;)

    Try this instead.

    if ($area eq "NETMAIL" && $toaddr eq "1:135/300" && $toname eq "Eric Renfro" {

    $change = 1;

    Hello Fabio!

    21 Jul 19, Fabio Bizzi wrote to Kai Richter:

    Carbon Copy works with netmail messages and it just copy the message
    from a netmail base to another netmail base, you can't cange the to: address nor the destination name and the status of the message
    (received) so you can't copy an incoming netmail and send the copy of
    the message to another destination.

    I haven't tried but maybe a workaround is possible with the NetmailExtern keyword. The better solution would be a netmail tracker.

    I just need it to change netmail coming into the system addressed to 'Sysop' to address them to 'Dan Richter'. :)

    Mails to Sysop 1:317/2 are not for you and you'll modify in transit netmail. So it's not that easy. The example Perl Filters already posted here are better because they take care of the adress.
