I think the current editor suffers from a fiber-optic cut link ... From what I understand he manages to make outbound calls via a kind of back-up but cannot be reached direct.

I'll try to remember that in December 2034.

But in six months, I've been the editor for 25 years.

I'll probably celebrate it with an article about all the hurdles put in front of me by entitled coordinators from Zone 1. Even including a failed hijacking attempt.

They were used to the average editor duration of nine months before me, and that those must be from their zone...

hate the USA, and FidoNet Zone 1.

Is the above kind of garbage/drama what has made you that way? You just
can't get over it? It was *so* traumatic that you're scarred for life?

    What a fuckin joke.

As for being the "editor"... LOL all that involves now is invoking a
script (or a "batch file" in your case) that spits out a duplicate copy
of the previous Snooze, with an updated "publication date" on it. That
must be so strenuous! Amazing that you've been able to keep that level

I'll probably celebrate it with an article about all the hurdles put in front of me by entitled coordinators from Zone 1. Even including a failed hijacking attempt.

I'm sure it would make an interesting article... but... Wouldn't you prefer to offer a summary of your 25 years, in parallelism with the evolution of the FidoNet network itself, highlighting your best memory and your worst moment as an Editor? Maybe you can't forget, but can you make peace acting as Editor and putting things in an objective and contextualized facts?

They were used to the average editor duration of nine months before me, and that those must be from their zone...

It could be an interesting starting point in your article: why 25 years instead of 9 months? Why these 25 years, and what have you faced in this time?

By the time I took over, it was a multi-hour, boring, tedious job. Very little actual editor work.

The only program used was MS-DOS only, it did not work properly on my Windows XP, so I basically had to debug and patch it, also removing the 7-bit character limit.

Posting the articles in this echo was probably the most time-consuming job. My predecessor, Frank Vest, already used a program Peter Karlsson (a Swedish sysop) wrote to automate it, but it too had to be updated to Euro standard by me, with the proper kludges.

In short, I'm amazed that so many of the previous editors lasted as long as nine months. Half of them even more -- that's the meaning of average -- but the other half less.

Thank you for the insight. That clarifies a lot.

ItÆs clear that if the job is automated and routine today, it's only because you put in the hard work to upgrade the tools, patch the code, and make the whole publishing and distribution process bulletproof.

Turning a tedious, multi-hour chore into an efficient pipeline is a massive contribution in itself. 25 years of keeping the wheels turning without a glitch is a testament to that reliability.

PS.- Have you documented about the whole process? (just in case, I don't mean to took over your duty).

I'm of Scottish/English descent. I do hope to visit over there in the next year or so, but not for socializing with FidoNetters. ;-)

Stay away from Belgium, I heard that over there, a man can marry his right hand... but when the left hand finds out, the divorce is costly.

If you peel off the mask and reveal yourself to have Dutch ancestry I will be EXTREMELY disappointed.

    Hahahahaha, do not worry! LOL

Be careful, the running joke here is that Scotsmen are merely Dutchmen who swam across the Northsea because they were too cheap to pay the ferry.

Plus in a dialect here, "a clough" is a wooden shoe ... and you do know the land of the wooden shoes, right? 8-)

We all come from somewhere ...

You also need to tell Dan about Belgian foreplay ...

Ouch! All right, thanks for that advice, and I'll also be sure to not
    shake any hands...

Yesterday this echo turned 30. Christopher Baker announced its
    creation in FidoNews Vol.13 No.28, 8 Jul 1996

I wanted to announce it via FidoNews, but I must have done something
wrong with my Netmail message to the current Editor. I'll do it again
(and better) this week to make it official. ;-)

Great work Enric! At last a (very) convenient way to browse (and search) the FidoNews archives.

BTW, your announcement hasn't been published yet...

Back to the OP: actually, this echo is young compared to many others. Interestingly, the same editor suggested its creation 5 years earlier, in 1991:
