The island of Kefalonia (Cephalonia) has been described as magical,
with air thick with the odor of oleander and the sound of goat bells.
While the description is certainly romantic, the fact remains that the
Ionian Islands and Western Greece sing an enticing song for modern
travelers, who are drawn to the region for sunshine, beautiful beaches,
history, architecture, and even meadows, Mediterranean oak forests, and
wildlife.
On March 19, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
(MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of
four of the Ionian Islands and Western Greece.
The islands captured in this image are, from north to south, Lefkada,
the small Ithaki, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos. Most of the Ionian Islands
were formed due to natural processes, but Lefkada was originally a part
of the mainland of Western Greece. When the Lefkas Canal was
constructed more than 2,500 years ago, to aid water travel, it
separated Lefkada from Greece, creating a new island.
