Prince William Sound sits on the south coast of the state of Alaska,
opening into the Gulf of Alaska and bounded by the Kenai Peninsula in
the east. It spans about 10,000 square miles of protected waterways,
islands, fjords, and around 150 glaciers. The largest port is Valdez,
with a few other towns and Alaskan native villages found on islands.
Prince William Sound offers safe water for trade, including oil (the
Trans-Alaska Pipeline System ends at Valdez), tourism, and a rich
habitat for diverse marine life, including humpback whales, orca
whales, porpoises, and seals. A variety of land animals live on the
rugged landscape surrounding the sound, and more than 220 species live,
breed, or visit the area during migration.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board
NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of Prince William
Sound, situated in the center of the image, on March 5, 2023.
