On the morning of January 19, 2023, Tropical Storm Cheneso made
landfall on the northeastern coast of Madagascar, just north of
Antalaha Town in Sava Region, carrying maximum sustained winds of about
66 mph (106 km/h). According to ReliefWeb, early assessments on January
19 reported 1 death and 1 missing person. An additional 2,224 people
were estimated to be impacted by the storm, including those evacuated
prior to the arrival of Cheneso.

Once on shore, the storm quickly began to weaken, but it also began to
slow forward motion, bringing sustained wind and heavy rain to the
region. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC issued its last advisory
on the system at 0900 UTC (12:00 noon local time) on January 19, when
winds had dropped to 51 mph (82 km/h). At that time, the center of
Cheneso was located 374 miles (600 km) north-northeast of Antananarivo,
Madagascar and was tracking westward. The tropical storm was expected
to dissipate quickly, with remnants tracking over land until at least
    January 21.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board
NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image on January 19, near
the time of landfall, when the large cloud-filled center of the storm
covered most of the northern tip of Madagascar. Large convective bands
were bringing rain to nearly half of country, as well as to the Comoros
    Islands northwest of Madagascar.
