January 7, 2023 - Aerosols over India

A heavy haze hung over India in early January 2023. On January 5, the
Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s
Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a gray shroud stretching
from the southern face of the Himalaya Mountains southward to the
central India and from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal.
The haze is the result of aerosols (fine particles) suspended in the
atmosphere. Some aerosols in this gray shroud may be from natural
sources, such as dust. Most, however, are likely due to human activity,
including emissions from cars and industry, heating fuels, and
agricultural fires.
