I have the episode of "The Lone Gunmen" (the short-lived spin-off to
X-Files) where the government flies remote-controlled airliners into the
World Trade Center and blames middle-eastern terrorists in order to
instigate a profit-making war. It aired in March, 2001.

That would be the pilot episode, no?

    Ep7 sounds hiliarious:

    7 "Planet of the Frohikes"
    April 6, 2001

The Lone Gunmen receive an email from an ingenious chimp, a
self-named Simon White-Thatch Potentloins, attempting to escape
    a government laboratory.

Thanks for the Tip, Kurt! Found the complete series on Youtube (channel HH C). I guess it has a lot of ads, donation requests or other shit -- I don't know, because I use the open source app STN Beta, that removes all such crap. :)

Yeah, that was really eerie. The question is, who got inspired by this, and who had the means.
