I've been on the go even more than usual this year, mostly without
internet access... I've been lurking regularly, though... but haven't
seen things to jump in on and our conversation had died away....

My son was in the States from mid-Jun to late-ish October, mostly at our
camp property, so I spent more time than usual there this year... he's
left again, so no more trips for me until April... ;)

Enough for at least one very decent shot ... or two short ones if needed. It was only a small 375ml bottle purchased at the last minute but was sufficient to mark the moment. I made sure it wasn't an official cybertoast so not to diminish the significance of 2024-11-05.

I got distracted setting up a supposedly fancier version of a testing echo which looks to have been a waste of time since it did nothing towards the original intent for it. Not really a surprise here but I can at least say I tried. Besides this has proved to be the best echoarea for anything I've ever needed testing. I am a satisfied customer. :-)

I've been on the go even more than usual this year

Sounds like you've had fun. For me this was a quiet summer and got no visitors from the east. My former wife phoned me on Guy Fawkes Day and we got got up on all things we needed to. I am hoping for a quiet and warmer winter this year although the fall thus far has been subpar as far as temperatures are concerned. Hopefully that is not a sign of thing to come.

Indeed. Right now we are in a really cold snap... got our first real
winter storm, started yesterday and overnight... almost a foot of snow,
they say... and the temps today are only in the 20sF (so below zero C),
and to drop into the low teens tonight... hopefully not a forfending
either... ;)

Like always. So far the only thing beyond the basics that has survived is the dynamic cybertoast countdown tagline thingy. I suspect that it still works on "Little Mikey's Brain" - which is the official Fidonet nodelisted machine - but as of last half dozen months I avoided replying with that setup due to issues beyond my control. Someone on that path is altering messages which given all the years it has been going on it appears to me will never get fixed. So far the only 'fix' I have come up with is to avoid using the node which is really, really sad. Oh well.

It's been cold here without any snow ... yet. The weather people are threatening us with the probability of a few rain showers or wet flurries overnight with periods of rain tommorrow and a high of 4C. Definetly well below so-called seasonal. We've had lows down to -5C over the weekend and last week but it has been too clear for rain ... or snow for that matter but there is snow atop the mountain behind Ladysmith so it has been closing in.

week... we did have one sunny day yesterday, though... and they're
saying sunny again on Saturday... ;) In between, overcast with chances
of snow and or rain...

Mountains tend to collect snow, though.... ;)

seems to have happened when they were quoted... no idea why the quoter
would clip sooner on the first than on the second at the end of the

Yes, that did come up differently... The only problem for me with a line
set to wrap at greater than 80 (but not unlimited) would be that it
would show up as a regular line and then a short line, alternating... I
have my word wrap in Emacs set for 72, otherwise it would also do the longlines, but not that useful for most of what I'm doing...

I also note that apparently you fixed the typo (assubing/assuming) in
the original iteration after doing the cut and paste jobbies... ;)

In my case line the
monitor I am currently using is 160 characters wide so a message that forces line lengths to 80 is a waste of an awesome terminal.

I suppose so... :) Here, the monitor is 80 characters wide, so both my BlueWave reader and the Emacs editor can only display up to 80
characters on the screen at one time on any line.... BW handles that by
doing the automatic wrap that keeps all the characters on the screen
(since one can't move off the current screen without going to the next
message, so things would otherwise be chopped off entirely)... Emacs
will switch to the next section of the line at character 79 (and
multiples thereof)...

did live in Jackson Mississippi for four years as a child... only snowed

Not sure if the weather we've been having has hurt the local skiing... I
think that the area that has the hills for skiing got more snow than we

Hallo Nancy!

I wouldn't have minded a thin skim of snow on everything to make
it a white Christmas, though....

Speaking for myself, I am glad there wasn't. There is talk of a slight chance of a dusting later this week but I am still hopeful for zero snow other than the mountains. Things are good just the way they are as we speak and the green Christmas was just what the doctor ordered. Also zero power outages were a very nice addition this time around.

We just got another dusting... didn't go out today, but it won't be bad
when we need to go out tomorrow....

We just got another dusting

I noticed earlier today that some of the raindrops were a tad more solid than usual. However they did fall shy of being officially called snow methinks.

We don't usually get power outages here, thankfully... :)

Power outages at my place are rare. That deal last summer was a freak
storm, that pulled the electric meter off the north side of the house,
and pulled the electric meter panel out of its place in the garage.

The insurance company dawdled around, saying the house was still
"livable", as there was no other damage (to the roof or otherwise), and
there was still running water.

However, with no power or air conditioning, it was over 100 degrees in
here, and people die in conditions like that each day. It was akin to
taking a hot shower, then climing into bed naked, without drying off.

After one night at that, where I got very little sleep, I said "screw this!!", and went and got a room at an area Super 8 Motel for 2 weeks.

How the insurance company considers what I described as "livable" ois
beyond me. They want you as a customer, and for you to pay the
premiums...but to have them pay out a claim, it's a catastrophe.

Yep. To the insurance companies, it's a catastrophe if they have to
pay a claim.

To some extent it depends on which insurance company... We've had both
good and some less good experiences with insurance claims over the
years... :)

Ah... That's what Richard watches, still... over the airwaves, basic
antenna... still gets lots of stations (and now, substations).... Not
likely to go away totally any time soon.... We've never had cable, and
haven't done it streaming through a computer or the like either... But
he is using a flat screen monitor instead of the old-tyme CRT... ;)

And I'm not recognizing that... Of course, I didn't grow up with TV (my
parents never did get one, although they'd watch my sister's once they'd
moved into the in-law apartment she built onto her house for them)... so there's a lot of TV references I'd not necessarily get....
