So I got given a dingus idiot laptop for free, in exchange for getting the user's files off it for her, which had a 1TB spinning hard drive in it and a 1.4GHz Pentium-based CPU in it. It was a horrible netbook for the time it was made (2015) and I installed Arch Linux on it for grits and shiggles.

Well, I tried KDE Plasma on it and it crashed on idle. Not surprising with such a horrible CPU and 8GB RAM.

Reinstalled Arch with the Cinnamon DE, and it was actually semi-useable but still crashed if I had VLC and the text editor open at the same time, so I ordered the laptop I'm posting this from.

So far, it's much nicer. It's a Dell laptop with 16GB RAM, a 512GB SSD and a 2.3GHz Core i7 processor, and it runs Arch with Cinnamon like a dream.

I'm betting there's something actually faulty with it, if it's crashing on you like that. Possibly bad RAM or disk? I have systems with much worse specs running stuff like the Plasma KDE. Slow, but fine.
