    Audacity - it's free and cross-platform

I haven't done a whole lot with Audacity, but I don't think it really compares on the same level as something like Garage Band or Logic Pro X. I've heard Audacity can do multi-track recordings, I believe, but for one thing, I don't think Audacity has a library of virtual instruments that can be played with a MIDI keyboard/controller like Garage Band & similar programs have.

GarageBand can even be played on the on screen keyboard as well on the iMac and on the iPad you touch the necessary notes or chords on the instruments themselves. Pretty neat I must say.

Actually Logic Pro X has a multitrack mixing console similar to the ones in the studio.
