    it was a joke.

The couple of servers that I found clearly announced the "server is down"
and not produce any results in the current window, but it would redirect
you to the real google if you clicked on any of the suggestions.

As it sits now, it's pretty stupid to operate a google bbs tunnel while having a website open. But I would find it more interesting if there was such an ansi door after telnetting to a bbs.

I like the statement "In a world of internet snooping, a BBS is
probably one of the last bastions of digital privacy".

eh, i wouldnt say we have privacy on bbses. infact, this very
conversation is being cached many times over. depends on how many bbses
are on the web and allow viewing the msg subs without signing in.

WRT privacy, it is more about the lack of telemetry, trackers and ads that bbsing/nntp/qwk is immune to as opposed to when using the www directly.

the fbi shows up to any sysops house they are gonna give up any
information they ask for i would assume.

And why would any sysop be worried about the fbi these days? ;)

In the past, dialup bbses may have been targets of distributing warez or certain pr0n and gained a bad reputation because of a handful of systems.
I remember reading about a few of those that were caught with violating copyright to playboy or something like that.

But today.. I would think that the fbi would have far greater fishes to
fry than harrasing a bbs operation somewhere or perusing "public" ftn/qwk/ nntp messages.

It almost sounds like a sickness to be so obsessed with collecting every
    byte passing throught the internet.

if they are doing illegal activity. for example there is one sysop who posts here who is a pedophile.

he got caught posting shit on irc and got banned from the server. 10 years later he comes back like nothing happened.

It is a sickness. I knew a lot of guys that sucked BBS's dry of every bit and byte that had. They didn't use the software. They just stored it. Look at the Internet Archive. Where do you think all that stuff comes from? I would think it would be pretty cool for the FBI to show up at my place. I'd feel very important. ;-). I believe the FBI has better things to do other then chase BBS SysOps around. lol

When I ran my original BBS in the 90s, occasionally I'd get a caller who would email me saying they heard it's a warez BBS and asking me how to get access to the warez section. I never ran a warez BBS, so I was confused and wondering where they had heard that. But later I thought perhaps they were from the police or FBI or something looking for warez BBSes to crack down on.

It was probably just a user looking for access to your "warez" section which is usually hidden until the SysOp grants the user access. It could have been the law but who knows. If someone asked me that question I told them they had to buy credits. That seemed to keep em honest. ;-)

So did you assume all BBSes were warez BBSes and ask how to get warez access? :P

    Nightfox

lol, and 92% of them had access in menu #7, type 'Z'.... lolz.

i had a sysop menu command and it did that when the user pressed it.

:) In the early-mid 90s, there was a BBS user in my area who was apparently a photographer and was known for uploading big sets of his photographs to various BBSes in the area. I had downloaded a few of them from some BBSes, and I thought they weren't bad. He eventually called my BBS, and he emailed me and asked if it would be okay for him to upload sets of his photos (they weren't explicit or anything). I didn't really want it taking up a lot of space on my hard drive though.

I don't allow uploading. SysOps need to remember their are users out there that get thier kicks out of trying to crash a BBS, website or whatever. The more access you allow the higher the chances someone is going to "get in". Back in the day SysOps would test one anothers BBS trying to crash it.

In my DOS / Telegard days, an unknowing sysop was just a PKZIP.BAT or PKUNZIP.BAT upload away from an empty harddrive - even by a standard validated user...

Worse yet, on some warez boards with newbie sysops, people would goto great lengths to change some warez game around and send USER.DAT back out to the user through some .COM file in a game...

Many ways that people could mess with boards without the right safegaurds in place. Renegade was much better, but them kids would get creative.
